Introduction
Stegosaurus was a heavily armoured dinosaur. It is recognised by the enormous, triangular bony plates that ran
along its back. The name Stegosaurus means ‘covered lizard’ or ‘roof lizard’, because of these
plates. Stegosaurus is a member of the group of dinosaurs known as the Ornithischia, the bird-hipped dinosaurs.
It is the most familiar and the largest of the stegosaurs, or plated dinosaurs.
Physical Features
Stegosaurus was a massive dinosaur that lumbered along on all four legs. It usually grew to a length of about
6.5 metres (21 feet), but some individuals could be as much as 9 metres (30 feet) long. Stegosaurus measured
about 3 metres (10 feet) tall at the hips and weighed about 2 tonnes. The huge plates that ran along its back
from its neck to its tail stood in two staggered rows down either side of the backbone. Some of the plates were
more than 60 centimetres (2 feet) tall. Stegosaurus also had two to four pairs of spikes on its tail, each one more
than 1 metre (3 feet) long. The body of Stegosaurus had an arched appearance. Its back legs were longer than
its front legs, and it had wide, elephant-like feet. Stegosaurus had a small, narrow head that measured only 40

centimetres (16 inches) long. A horn-covered beak replaced the front teeth, and its side, or cheek teeth, had
ridged surfaces.
Behaviour
Stegosaurus was a plant eater. It fed on low-lying plants, such as ferns. Stegosaurus used its spiked tail in self-
defence. Scientists believe that the large plates running along the dinosaur’s back also protected the animal
from its enemies. The plates contained blood vessels that may have helped control its body temperature as well.
When Stegosaurus needed to warm up, it faced its plates into the sun. To cool off, it found a place where its
plates would be shaded. The plates may also have been used to attract mates and as protection from rival males
during the breeding season. Stegosaurus probably lived in herds.
