Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

For the ELL students in my class I would change the language on their end so they can participate in the
classroom assessment. I would also have a transcript of the video printed out on paper so they can read it and
watch the pictures that play throughout the movie. For the students in my class who have vision impairment
and couldn’t see the video I would sit the child up close so they can see the screen clearly. If a student did
have internet access at home, I would let them check out a iPad at school for them to bring home or I would
allow them to come early or stay after school to watch the video.
Lesson idea implementation:
During this lesson students will have a chance to preview the new subject at home on their computers using
the classroom blogs page. Once students come in the next day/ week then the students will feel more
comfortable with what they are about to learn. If a student has questions about the new upcoming subject,
they can ask any questions that they have the next class day. After the teacher lectures about the War of
1812 the teacher will assign groups of 4 and each group will have to create their own iMovie about a certain
topic on the War of 1812. The students will have a chance to use iPads in the classroom with their groups and
research on their topic.
Once they have all of their research complete, they’ll get to create a movie on the iPads. The students will
be assessed by the students following up with each group and making sure they are on the right track. The
final project will be shared with the rest of the class at the end of the week. The teacher will then post the
movie of all groups and combine them together and post it on the classroom webpage. The teacher will also
send the movie to all 4th grade teachers so they can share it with their class. After each group submits their
movie the teacher will go through and grade each movie and provide feedback.
Importance of technology:
A multimedia tool is critical to creating this project it provides students a “movie trailer” on what is to come
next in class. This project could not be completed with out this technology because the iMovie software is

only available by using technology such as iPads, computers and iPhones. The only technology that will be
used in this learning experience will include iPads, computers, projectors and the iMovie software.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Some possible internet safety issues that could pop up while students use this software could be pop up ads
of something inappropriate. A student privacy issue that could come in place is someone hacking the
classroom website and altering the student’s movie. To prevent these issues the teacher should make the
classroom webpage password protected and make the computer in privacy mode setting. To alleviate any
fears by parents or administrators I would send out a permission slip to parents telling them about this
project and what their child will be doing. If a parent doesn’t want their child to participate then the child will
do everything the class does but instead of turning it in on the classroom webpage, I would have that child
turn it in paper form by writing their “movie” out. By having the permission slips signed by parents it will
make it less stressful for administrators to worry about.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson idea, I feel that the activity that I created can impact student learning because not
very many teachers know or let their student use a software to create a movie to be a part of their students’
presentation. The “movie trailer” that I created was an intro to studying about the War of 1812 and then the
student’s presentations using iMovie about a certain part of the war would be a way for them to learn more
about the war. To further extend this project I would send it out to other 4th grade teachers so they can share
it with their students since they are learning about the War of 1812 also.
