During my Spring 2018 semester I did my first field experience of my
ECED education. It was very nerve racking since it was my first time working with children in a school environment. I worked as part of a staff member throughout the months of working with the school. I got the chance to work with 4 year old kids. At the time I also had a four year old nephew and it was at his headstart, so I thought that it would be a piece of cake since I tend to help out my nephew a lot at home. I learned that in the school environment is completely different than a at home environment. Their were 15 kids in the class, with a main teacher and a teacher’s assistant, plus me as a practicum student. I learned on how to take observations with the teachers help, how their developmental skills are, and kept, how to observe a teacher at work, how to treat a child who is misbehaving, how to use assessments in a classroom, and as well as to how to maintain it a healthy and safe environment for the children. I learned how their bathroom breaks worked and how each child is to be treated. I also learned how to create a child’s portfolio and how to work on my communication with teachers and parents of the children. At this age children learn their name, numbers, how to write their names, and how to share. I enjoyed working with four year olds. ECED 205 Early Care Practicum
During my Fall 2018 semester I did my practicum at a child daycare site
with two year olds. In this aspect of the practicum working with three year olds is a lot more challenging. Their were 8 children in a small classroom the main teacher and a teacher's assistant. In this practicum I learned how to take observations, how to maintain the cleanliness of the children, how to take precautions of when they have an accident, because most of them were still on diapers. I learned how to interact with them, play with them, make sure I spoke at a softer tone, and how disciplined worked. With two year olds came a lot of responsibility for when it came to their observations, and assessments. I remembered when the teacher showed me how she would do their assessments one by one since some of them learned at a much slower pace than others. I also had created a child portfolio which I knew how to make, because I had created one before with the four year olds. To me working with two year olds in the school environment was a lot tougher. In the future if I will work with two year old’s I will exactly know what to do and how to treat them as if they were my own.
