A fondness for eating, the availability of food, lifestyles and jobs that lack physical activity, and an overdependence on domestic help are just some of the factors that have contributed towards making Malaysians obese. To encourage children to become physically active, parents must lead by example, However, some Malaysian parents are not only guilty of not exercising but also of restricting physical activity in children, citing safety reasons. However, this should not be an excuse. If safety is an issue, then, parents and other adults in the family should join the children instead of restricting them. Adults and children do not necessarily have to take part in the same physical activity. The activity should be appropriate for the person's age, health and physical fitness. Physical activity should be part and parcel of a family’s daily routine, the way it was, before modem gadgets and appliances made an appearance. Malaysians should walk or cycle to places they go to daily, for example, the school or market, instead of driving or being driven. ‘All members of the family should be routinely involved in everyday household chores like washing, cleaning and gardening. Parents and children should also get involved in sporting activities like jogging, swimming and hiking as well as games such as football, badminton and basketball at least every other day. ‘These can become family activities. The weather should not be used as an excuse as there are indoor activities like table-tennis, squash and futsal which they can take part in. Elderly members of the family can get involved in less strenuous activities like yoga and fai | chi, or, just brisk walking. | | All family members should be committed to becoming fit. Time should be set aside daily for | some form of physical activity for the family. Between 5,00 and 6.30 p.m. in the evening is | ideal. Once this becomes a routine, all members of the family will look forward to this time | of physical activity. Sedentary activities ike watching television and social networking should be kept to a minimum.
