Definition of Terms

 Architecture - is both the process and the product of planning, designing, and
constructing buildings or any other structures.
 Agriculture - is the process of producing food, feed, fiber and many other desired
products by the cultivation of certain plants and the raising of domesticated animals
(livestock).
 Civilization - is any complex society characterized by urban development, social
stratification imposed by a cultural elite, symbolic systems of communication (for
example, writing systems), and a perceived separation from and domination over the
natural environment.
 Crop - is a plant or animal product that can be grown and harvested extensively for profit
or subsistence. Crop may refer either to the harvested parts or to the harvest in a more
refined state. Most crops are cultivated in agriculture or aquaculture.
 Economy - the wealth and resources of a country or region, especially in terms of the
production and consumption of goods and services.
 Food Shortage - Severe hunger; starvation. A catastrophic food shortage due to lack of
food or difficulties in food distribution, affecting large numbers of people due to climatic,
environmental, socio-economic reasons or extreme political conditions such as tyrannical
government or warfare.
 Gross Domestic Product - the total value of goods produced, and services provided in a
country for one year.
 Indoor Farming - is a method of growing crops or plants, usually on a large scale,
entirely indoors. This method of farming often implements growing methods such as
hydroponics and utilizes artificial lights to provide plants with the nutrients and light
levels required for growth. A wide variety of plants can be grown indoors, but fruits,
vegetables, and herbs are the most popular.
 Industrialization - the development of industries in a country or region on a wide scale.
 Innovate - make changes in something established, especially by introducing new
methods, ideas, or products.
 Livestock - is commonly defined as domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting
to produce labor and commodities such as meat, eggs, milk, fur, leather, and wool.
 Nomad - ((in Latin) "people without fixed habitation") is a member of a community of
people without fixed habitation who regularly move to and from the same areas,
including nomadic hunter-gatherers, pastoral nomads (owning livestock), and tinker or
trader nomads.
 Rural Area - are areas which are not towns or cities. They are often farming or
agricultural areas. These areas are sometimes called "the country" or "countryside".
 Self-sufficiency - the quality or state of being able to provide everything you need,
especially food, without the help of other people or countries
 Urban Area - An urban area is the region surrounding a city. Most inhabitants of urban
areas have nonagricultural jobs. Urban areas are very developed, meaning there is a
density of human structures such as houses, commercial buildings, roads, bridges, and
railways. "Urban area" can refer to towns, cities, and suburbs.
 Urban Heat Island - is an urban area or metropolitan area that is significantly warmer
than its surrounding rural areas due to human activities.
