SURVEYING DEPARTMENT 2014 – 2015
SURVEYING I A

Assignment (1)
1. A 20 m chain was 6 cm too short was used to measure a line and the result was 145.98 m.
What was the true length?

2. The length of the survey line measured with a 20 m chain was found to be 635.4 m. when
the chain was compared with a standard chain, it was found to be 0.20 m too long. Find
the true length of the line.

3. A distance of 220.450 m was measured with a steel band of nominal length 30 m. On

standardization the tape was found to be 30.003 m. Calculate the correct measured
distance, assuming the error is evenly distributed throughout the tape.

4. A chain of nominal length 20.00m when compare d with a standard measures 20.05m. If
this chain is used to measure a line AB and the recorded measurement is 131.35m, what is
the true length of AB.?

5. The following data were obtained from a survey along a slope, calculate the horizontal
distance. Measured length = 126.300m, Slope angle = 2o 34'

6. A 50 m tape was found to be 8 cm too long after measuring a distance of 3600 m, along
a slope of 6o 30'. It was tested again at the end of day’s 6800 m, along a slope of 8o 30'. If
the tape was correct before the commencement of the work, calculate the true distance.

7. At the end of a survey of a parcel of land a tape of 30 m length was found to be 10 cm

short. The area of the plan drawn with the measurements taken with this tape is found to
be 135 cm2. If the scale of the plan is 1/1000, what is the true area of the field, assuming
that the chain was exact 30 m at commencement of the survey?
