Lesson Idea Name: The Water Cycle

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th
Content Standard Addressed: S4E3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to demonstrate the
water cycle. a. Plan and carry out investigations to observe the flow of energy in water as it changes states
from solid (ice) to liquid (water) to gas (water vapor) and changes from gas to liquid to solid.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor: Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The iMovie will provide the student with engaging information. They will be able to watch the
video as many times as needed when it is posted onto the blog. It is important that the kids are able to pause
or rewind the video if that is needed. Students will be making their own video for the end of the lesson, this
will act as engagement for the students because they will get to add their own pictures.
Representation: Representation of the video will be explored on bubbl.us so that all students can break the
video up into parts with words that they understand. It is important for the students to be able to put input
in the chart. The children will also be creating their own video and that means for the student to be able to
show what they are thinking in their video.
Action and Expression: The expression of the kids happens when talking about the video. They watch the
video, then we will create a bubbl.us. Kids will be putting info from the video into the chart and they will feel
a sense of completion. They will feel that their expression of the video was heard. When students are making
their own video, I will allow them the voice and choice to find pictures that they like from the specific website
they are given.
Lesson idea implementation: The students will be starting on the unit of the water cycle. To introduce this
unit on the water cycle, the students will watch the introductory iMovie, The Water Cycle. This video can be
found on the classroom blog page where all the students can have access to the video outside of the
classroom as well. They will all watch the video in large group and then we will talk about it. After watching
the video, the teacher and students are going to work together using bubbl.us to make a Venn diagram of
what they just learned. All students will get input on what goes onto the bubbl.us and that can be their

reference chart during the unit of study. The chart will break up the cycle so that the 3 main parts are
evaporation, condensation and precipitation. The kids will be able to add to the chart if they discover
something new.

Moving along to the next step, I would love to bring out 3 sensory bins. Some of the students may have felt
water, snow, or ice before. But I would bring in those three types of precipitation so that the kids had time to
inspect each one and feel what they are like and how they are different from each other. It is more beneficial
for the students to do hands on learning rather than just talk about something. The sensory bins are the
hands-on learning where they can take their new knowledge and complete a WebQuest on how precipitation
changes forms. The web quest that the students will do will be included on a Nearpod so that they are not
roaming the internet on their own. The students will complete the web quest on the Nearpod, then move to
the quiz. They will be quizzed on the content from the introduction video and the web quest that they just
completed.

Students will then be using iMovie. They have used this technology before, so they are familiar with how it
works. They will be put into groups of 3 to complete the video. They will find a video they like on the water
cycle, then add pictures and music to their video. We are going to be putting these on the classroom blog, so
making sure I have permission to share the students work is important. I will publish the videos on the
classroom blog so that their ideas are now shared on a password protected page. Parents, students, and even
students from other classes can now view their video.
Importance of technology: Technology in this lesson is essential in the making of the iMovie. iMovie is an app
provided on all Apple products. The iMovie application is on iPads, iPhones, and Macs. The iPad is going to be
used for the importance of our movie. We will use the iPads to aid us in the making of our video. It is
important that we have this technology so that we are able to do the project. The iPads are available in class
and they are available for check out to go home with the kids, they can receive these from the Library.
Without technology, we cannot begin to start this project. There would be no introduction video to the
lesson, and the students would not be able to create their own videos. The iPad allows for creation and
inspiration to flow to the minds of students and their other peers. The use of the blog is essential so that the
students have access to these materials outside of the classroom. If the video is on the blog, they can watch it
as many times as needed.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy: When using any kind of technology, the students are at a risk of their
privacy getting into the wrong hands. The teacher’s main job is to protect the children’s identity and ensure
safety to that child. When we are working on the blog, to ensure that no child’s identity is known, I will
password protect any pages where the students work is posted online. To ensure maximum safety, using code
names will ensure that the identity of that child is protected in two different ways. Always making sure that
teachers have consent from parents before they post anything on the classroom blog is very important.
Keeping copies of those pages in the class will be easy to send one home to receive permission from the
parents.
Reflective Practice: After making my lesson I feel that I have made a complete lesson, not just an
introduction to the topic of study. The children will watch the video, they will then collaborate to make a
bubbl.us chart with information about the water cycle. From there the students will be doing a web quest and
taking a quiz using the Nearpod that they are given. The students will then be put into groups of 3 and making
a video of their own which increases Bloom’s level and the LoTi level in the classroom.
