November 1st, 2018

The ladies of Mergenthaler High School women’s volleyball team ended their season with a loss
to Perry Hall High School.

While the final outcome of the Thursday night game, a 3-0 sweep, was disappointing the Lady
Mustangs say they are satisfied with their overall record and improvement they displayed
through the rest of the season.

“I am disappointed that we lost this game against a big opponent, but I know we as a team
worked hard to get here, and I’ll miss them since this was my last season with them,” said
Jamera Ferrell; a senior outside/middle hitter.

She hopes to continue her love for volleyball in college next year, Morgan State University,
Coppin State University and Lincoln University are all under consideration.

With a dedicated coach, to show Ferrell the game she knows she is set for college volleyball, and
any opponent she and her future team will face in the future.

Mervo held an early lead of 9-4 in the second set before Perry Hall continuously scored to
eventually dominate the game and take an even stronger lead. Regardless of the team’s loss the
Lady Mustangs are aware of their mistakes and, ready to make changes to ensure a better season
next year.

“We have to work harder. We made a lot of mistakes. What we have to do is continue to work
harder in the gym and harder on our fundamentals. Make sure we're communicating and digging
up everything we missed,” said Head Coach Chanel Young.

Young is an alumna of Mervo who also played volleyball for the Lady Mustangs. She has been
coaching the team for the last 13 years.

Despite Thursday loss, the ladies were still able to make it to the playoffs with their game against
Perry Hall being a part of the 2018 Maryland High School Girls Volleyball Playoff Bracket, with
a 9-4 record.

“We didn’t win the title again but we we're close. Although I will be leaving in the spring I know
the girls who will still be here and the girls to come will make Coach Young proud, they just
have to work hard,” said Ferrell.

When the game ended, the team’s fans showered the girls with love and support with chants of
“Mervo – Mervo – Mervo”.
“I don’t care if we lost again; I will support my school and my friends through whatever they do
and will never stop cheering,” said junior Keyona Johnson. “Mervo is the best school in
Baltimore City and although we lost, Perry Hall definitely saw how tough we were.”
