Language and Academic Development in ELL students

Reading
● Activity: ​Give students a paragraph of a story book and have them break down the
words by sounding them out and writing out the sounds they hear.
● How it meets the needs of the ELL student:​ This will have ELL students be able to
have a better understanding of word structure and they way words sound.
Writing
● Activity: ​Have students write out directions about their morning routine before they
come to school.
● How it meets the needs of the ELL student:​ This meets the needs of ELL students
by teaching them how to properly write directions.
Mathematics
● Activity: ​Have students unscramble the spelling out of math vocabulary into its
correct spelling.
● How it meets the needs of the ELL student:​ This activity will meet the needs of
ELL students by them using context clues and the sounds of the letters provided in
order to create the correct vocabulary word.
Science
● Activity: ​Have students in groups follow the instructions on baking cookies.
● How it meets the needs of the ELL student: ​This will teach ELL students to follow
exact measurements of the recipe with a visual representation.
Art, Music or Social Studies (choose one)
● Activity: ​Have students match the sounds (music) of different animals, then have
them create movements to go along with the animal sounds.
● How it meets the needs of the ELL student: ​This activity will help English
Language Learners to understand basic matchings of objects and sounds.
