1. A closed cylindrical tank of height 1.4m. and radius of the base is 56 cm.

is made up of a

thick metal sheet. How much metal sheet is required (Express in square meters)

Sol. Given dimensions of closed cylindrical tank are

Height =h=1.4m

Radius =r=56cm=56/100 m =0.56m

Metal sheet required to make cylindrical tank= total surface area of the cylindrical tank

=2𝜋r(r+h)

=2×22/7×0.56(0.56+1.4)

=2×22×0.08×1.96

=6.8992 square meters

2. Volume of a cylinder is 308 cm3. Its height is 8cm.find its later surface area and total

surface area.

Sol. volume = 308 cm³

=> πr²h = 308

=> πr² = 308/8 = 38.5 cm²

=> r² = 38.5 /π = 38.5 × 7/22

=> r² = 12.25 = 3.5²

=> r = 3.5 cm

Now,

Lateral surface area = 2π×3.5×8

=> 56π = 56×22/7 = 176 cm²

Now,

total surface area= 2πrh + 2πr²

= 176 + 2× 38.5

= 176 + 77

= 253 cm²
3. A metal cuboid of length 22 cm, breadth 15 cm and height 7.5 cm was melted and cast into a
cylinder of height 14 cm. Find the radius of the cylinder.

4. An overhead water tanker is in the shape of a cylinder has capacity of 616 cub.metre.

The diameter of the tank is 5.6 m. Find the height of the tank.
Sol. Diameter of tank = d=5.6m
radius of tank = r =d/2
=5.6/2
=2.8m
volume of cylinder =616
V= λr²h

616=22/7 x 2.8 x 2.8 x h

616 x 7/22 x 10/28 x 10/28 =h
h=25m

5. A metal pipe is 77 cm long, the inner diameter of the cross- section is 4 cm and the outer

diameter is 4.4cm. find the 1. inner curved surface area2. outer curved surface area3. total

surface area
Sol. Here, h = 77 cm,

Outer radius (R) = 4. 4/ 2 cm = 2.2 cm,

Inner radius (r) = 4/ 2 cm = 2 cm

(i) Inner curved surface area of the pipe

= 2πrh
= 2 × 22/ 7 × 2 × 77 cm2

= 2 × 22 × 22 cm2 = 968 cm2 Ans.

(ii) Outer curved surface area of the pipe = 2πRh

= 2 × 22/ 7 × 2.2 × 77 cm2 = 44 × 24.2 cm2

= 1064.80 cm2 Ans.

(iii) Total surface area of the pipe = inner curved surface area + outer

curved surface area + areas of the two base rings.

= 2πrh + 2πRh + 2π (R2 – r2)

= 968 cm2 + 1064.80 cm2 + 2 × 22/ 7 [(2.2)2 – 22] cm2

= 2032.80 cm2 + 5.28 cm2 = 2038.08 cm2

6. A cylindrical pillar has a diameter of 56 cm and is of 35 m high there are 16 pillars around the

building find the cost of the painting the curved surface area of all the pillars at the rate of 5.50

rs per 1 m.sq. Sol.

7. The diameter of a roller is 84cm and its length is 120cm . It takes 500 complete revolution
to move once over to level a playground . the area of the playground in metre square
Sol. Radius of the roller (r) = 84/ 2 cm = 42 cm

Length of the roller (h) = 120 cm

Curved surface area of the roller = 2πrh

= 2 × 22/ 7 × 42 × 120 cm2 = 44 × 720 cm2 = 31680 cm2

∴ area covered by the roller in 1 revolution = 31680 cm 2

∴ area covered by the roller in 500 revolutions = 31680 × 500 cm 2 = 15840000 cm

Hence, area of the playground = 15840000/ 100× 100 m2 = 1584 m2.

8. The inner diameter of a circular well is 3.5 m. It is 10 m deep. Find

(i) its inner curved surface area,

(ii) the cost of plastering this curved surface at the rate of Rs 40 per m2

Sol. Here, r = 3. 5/ 2 m , h = 10 m

(i) Inner curved surface area of the well

= 2πrh = 2 × 22/ 7 × 3. 5 /2 × 10m2

= 22 × 5 m2 = 110 m2 Ans.

(ii) Cost of plastering 1 m2 = Rs 40

∴ Cost of plastering the curved surface area of the well

= Rs 110 × 40 = Rs 4400

9. Find
(i) the lateral or curved surface area of a closed cylindrical petrol storage tank that is 4.2 m
in diameter and 4.5 m high.

(ii) how much steel was actually used, if 1/ 12 of the steel actually used was wasted in
making the tank.

Sol. Here, r = 4. 2/ 2 m = 2.1 m, h = 4.5 m

(i) Curved surface area of the storage tank = 2πrh

= 2 × 22 7 × 2.1 × 4.5 m2 = 59.4 m2 Ans.

(ii) Total surface area of the tank = 2πr (h + r)

= 2 × 22/ 7 × 2.1 (4.5 + 2.1) m2

= 44 × 0.3 × 6.6 m2 = 87.12 m2

Let the actual area of steel used be x m 2.

Area of steel wasted = 1/ 12 of x m2 = x/ 12 m2. ... (i)

∴ area of the steel used in the tank =( x − x /120 )m2 = 11/ 12 x m2

⇒ 87.12 = 11/ 12 x

⇒ x = 87. 12x 12/ 11 = 95.04 m2

Hence, 95.04 m2 of steel was actually used

11. The curved surface area of the cylinder is 1760cmsquare and it volume is 12320 square

centimetre find its height

Sol. we know that ;

curved surface area of cylinder = 2πrh & volume of cylinder = πr²h

Here,according to given; C.S.Area = 1760

=> 2πrh = 1760

=> πrh = 1760 / 2 = 880 ------- (1) and volume = 12320

=> πr²h = 12320

=> πrh × r = 12320

=> 880 × r = 12320

=> r = 12320 / 880

=> r = 14 cm

Substituting r=14cm in eq(1), 22/7 x 14 x h = 880

2h = 40cm
⇒h=20cm
Therefore, the height of the cylinder(h)=20cm.

10. A one side open cylinder drum has inner radius 28cm . and height 2.1 m How much water

Sol. Volume of drum = π x r² x h

= 22/7 x 28² x 210 (1m = 100 cm)
= 517,440 cm³

= 517,440/1000 = 517.44 Litres (1000cc = 1 litre)
