General Absolution (Adapted From The Collectio Rituum)
General Absolution (Adapted From The Collectio Rituum)
After the Veneration of the Cross, the Blessed Sacrament is taken by appointed ministers to the altar.
The rite provided takes place before Holy Communion on Good Friday. Before the rite (or as part of the
homily), the priest explains to the faithful who wish to receive general absolution that they should be
properly disposed. Each one should repent of his sins and resolve to turn away from these sins, to make
up for any scandal and harm he may have caused, and to confess individually at the proper time each of
the serious sins which cannot now be confessed. Some form of reparation may be proposed to all, and
each individual may add something if he desires.
GENERAL CONFESSION
The priest invites the penitents who wish to receive general absolution to indicate their desire by some
kind of sign. He may say:
Will those of you who wish to receive sacramental absolution please bow your heads
and acknowledge before God that you are sinners, in need of his mercy and
forgiveness.
The priest then invites the people to say a general formula for confession. The people may repeat after
the priest. He may use the following:
The priest then gives the absolution, holding his hands extended over the penitents saying:
The priest then invites all present to pray the Lord’s Prayer:
At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say: Our Father…
The liturgy proceeds with the Communion Rite for Good Friday.
