GENERAL VOLUNTEER REQUEST

Thank you so much for contacting Wheeler about volunteering! There are a lot of ways to get involved and it would be more
efficient to direct you to our interactive website! Here, you can peruse opportunities, see descriptions, qualifications,
schedules, and in some cases – sign-up immediately. Our volunteer website is www.WheelerVolunteer.org. The main page
of our site has five icons, which are listed below, as well as an Advanced Search feature if you wanted to narrow down
results by location, date, etc.

Serve a Meal: We always suggest meal service as a great way to get involved initially. This allows you get to know staff,
see and interact a bit with guests, and occurs every day of the year. You can self-schedule for these positions!
Find Other Opportunities: Other opportunities, such as Housekeeping, Thrift Store, Recreation Night, and more are listed
here. Depending on the opportunity, you may be able to self-schedule or you can sign up for more information and that
sends our team a notification to connect with you because more planning is involved in that position.
Become High Impact: High Impact opportunities are those that serve our guests directly and volunteers must make a year-
long commitment and have certain qualifications, which are listed on each opportunity. This also sends us a notification to
connect with you concerning next steps.
Wheeler 101: This is our volunteer orientation session that discusses topics such as poverty, addiction, mental health,
Wheeler’s programs, and how to get involved. This is the first step to becoming a High Impact volunteer!
Special Events: We have events throughout the year in which volunteers can get involved.

You will create a user name and login and use this any time you wish to sign up or if you need to cancel. It is a user-friendly
system and allows volunteers to sign up for as many or few opportunities with just a few clicks! Once you are scheduled or
click you want more information, you will be sent an email. Some folks are finding those emails may be going to their spam
or junk folders. The email would have come from system@ecemail.samaritan.com. You may want to check!

Please let me know if you have any questions at all. Contact people are also listed on the various volunteer opportunities as
well.
Thank you and have a good day!
MEAL SERVICE REQUEST

Thank you for contacting us about serving meals at Wheeler! We rely on volunteers every day of the year to serve meals to
our guests. The process to get scheduled to serve a meal is pretty simple:

- Go to www.WheelerVolunteer.org.
- Click on the 'Serve a Meal' icon.
- Select which location – Indianapolis or Bloomington. You can also select a date range & group size, but that could limit the
results so if you are flexible, we suggest only selecting the location then 'Search'.
- A calendar will appear with available options that meet your criteria. Click on the shift(s) of interest.
- Information will appear about the opportunity. If you wish to self-schedule, click 'Sign Up' and follow the prompts.

You will create a user name and login and use this any time you wish to sign up or if you need to cancel. It is a user-friendly

CHECK SPAM / YOUR IMPACT PROFILE

Thank you so much for your email! We have sent a few emails out from our new Volunteer Website & Registration system

REFERRAL/REQUEST RESPONSE

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the [LOCATION TITLE] through the [OPP TITLE] opportunity! I would love to
share more about what this volunteer position entails. I am sure you read all the details on the website - do you have any
specific questions and/or dates in mind? I hope to hear from you soon and I look forward to assisting you.

HIGH IMPACT REFERRAL/REQUEST RESPONSE

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the [LOCATION TITLE] through the [OPP TITLE] opportunity! In order to reach
more guests effectively, we have a volunteer information session called ‘Wheeler 101’. This orientation is geared towards
prospective volunteers interested in serving our guests in a more hands-on fashion, these opportunities are called High
Impact. A 101 will discuss Wheeler’s history, values, information about homelessness and addiction, boundaries, volunteer
opportunities, etc.

All volunteers interested in serving in High Impact ways will need to first attend a Wheeler 101 before serving.

Please head to our website, www.WheelerVolunteer.org and click on the ‘Wheeler 101’ icon to see upcoming dates and to
register for a session.

You can always get involved in other ways, such as Meal Service, while you wait to attend. Those opportunities will be
located under the ‘Share a Meal’, ‘Find Other Opportunities’, and ‘Special Events’ icons.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, etc. Thank you so much and have a great day!

APPLICATION RESPONSE

Thank you so much for your volunteer application! We truly appreciate your desire to serve the homeless and those in
need. I have begun reviewing your application and the next step is to try and get together for an interview. When would be
the best time for you to meet during the week?
---
Thank you so much for your volunteer application! We are so grateful for your desire to serve with us. I have reviewed your
application and based on the information (especially timeframe available), the following opportunities would be available for
you to volunteer: [Insert Links of IMPACT opps]
---
My office is located in our Administration building, which is the same location Wheeler 101 took place. Due to our parking
lot being extremely small with barely enough room for staff and organization vehicles, you may have to park in metered
parking. Metered parking is available on New York & Delaware Streets; $1.50 is 1 hour of parking time. If you find a spot
and are able to park in our lot, please let the Front Desk know and they will have you check in your car. Let the front desk
know you are there to see me!

UNSURE ABOUT JESUS – HIGH IMPACT INVOLVEMENT

Thank you for your application! As you heard in Wheeler 101 (as well as seen on our website, position descriptions, and
High Impact Application), Wheeler’s mission and vision are to provide Christ-centered programs & services for the homeless
and those in need and to see every man, woman, and child we serve equipped to be productive citizens who enjoy lasting
success in Christ.

In order to do this, our programming, volunteer opportunities, staff, and volunteers who desire to serve hands-on, must be
aligned and in agreement with not only our mission and vision, but also our Statement of Faith, know Jesus Christ as their
Lord and Savior, and have a church home. Since our High Impact positions are so Christ-centered, it may make those who
do not share the same, strong, Christ-centered belief system uneasy and poses difficulty in performing duties of sharing the
love of Jesus.

You had indicated you are unsure about Christ as your Savior – are their questions you have or information I can provide
regarding this?

If you can provide insight and information on who you believe Jesus to be, relationship with Him, etc. that will greatly help
direct us in next steps.

NO TO HIGH IMPACT INVOLVEMENT, BUT YES TO OTHER AREAS

Thank you for your application! As you heard in Wheeler 101 (as well as seen on our website, position descriptions, and
High Impact Application), Wheeler’s mission and vision are to provide Christ-centered programs & services for the homeless
and those in need and to see every man, woman, and child we serve equipped to be productive citizens who enjoy lasting
success in Christ. In order to do this, our programming, volunteer opportunities, staff, and volunteers who desire to serve
hands-on, must be aligned and in agreement with not only our mission and vision, but also our Statement of Faith, know
Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and have a church home. Since our High Impact positions are so Christ-centered, it
may make those who do not share the same, strong, Christ-centered belief system uneasy and poses difficulty in
performing duties of sharing the love of Jesus.

That being said, we would be grateful to have you serve in a variety of other opportunities, like Meal Service, Housekeeping,
at our Thrift Store, Special Events, and more. Go to www.WheelerVolunteer.org and these positions will be listed under
‘Share a Meal’, ‘Find Other Opportunities’, and ‘Special Events’.
Again, we do truly appreciate your desire to serve. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you!

NEW WHEELER MISSION STAFF PERSON

Welcome to Wheeler! My name is Bethany and I am the Director of Volunteers. It is exciting to have you as part of the
Wheeler family. This is a phenomenal place to work as we get to see Christ change lives here every day. It is so very cool!

My team consists of Becca Mathews & Megan Steward-Phelps and we are looking forward to meeting you. As you may
have understood through the interview process, Wheeler places significant value on volunteers – we wouldn’t be here
without them! At some point in the near future, we would love to meet with you to share more about our Volunteer Ministry.
One of us will be in touch soon after you get your feet planted a bit!

On top of volunteers from the community coming in to serve, we have a lot of volunteer opportunities for staff and their
friends & families too. You will probably get emails from myself or our Director of Special Events, Tammy, announcing
various opportunities for staff to get involved with, like the Drumstick Dash, (which is our largest fundraiser of the year and
the 2nd largest running event in Indiana!).

If you haven’t done so already, you can go to www.WheelerVolunteer.org to peruse the site and even register for things, like
Wheeler 101 (our orientation to Wheeler session). Please be sure to use your Wheeler email address so I am able to mark
you as ‘Staff’!

If you have any questions, comments, etc. whatsoever, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

I hope to meet you soon and that your first few days with us have been great!

FAMILY / GROUP VOLUNTEER SUGGESTIONS

Thank you for your email about wanting your family to get involved. We love having families and planting the seeds of loving
& serving others in kids. I do have a few questions that could direct us to opportunities:

- What is the group size?

- Are minors joining you? If so, how many and what are their approximate ages?
- Is there a specific day of the week/date and timeframe that you wish to serve?

The one I recommend families first start out with is Meal Service. It occurs daily, tasks are simple, and kids are
welcome! For more detailed information (locations, timeframes, age restrictions, etc.) and to sign-up, go to our website,
www.WheelerVolunteer.org and click on ‘Serve a Meal’
If you wish to get involved in other ways, I also recommend Housekeeping (minimum age is 5) and the Thrift Store
(minimum age is 10). You can also self-schedule for these on our website. They are listed under ‘Find Other Opportunities’.

If you have any questions, comments, or would like more info, please let me know! Thank you again for your email and
have a great day!

UNDER AGE VOLUNTEERS

Thank you so much for your desire to volunteer at Wheeler Mission! We love volunteers and need them every single day of
the year. I noticed on your Volunteer Profile that you are under the age of 18. Wheeler policy is that minors must be
accompanied by a parent or guardian while serving. Will someone be coming with you?

If you have any questions, just let me know. Thank you and have a great day!

HANDING OUT ITEMS TO THE HOMELESS

During these cold, winter months many of the homeless will find shelter at local homeless shelters through a city program
called Winter Contingency. This is when temperatures or weather conditions are cold or dangerous that street outreach
teams head out to known homeless areas and offer transportation to shelters to ensure each person has a warm place to
stay. Not everyone takes these groups up on the offer, but instead find abandon buildings and bundle up in blankets with
candles (which is still incredibly dangerous as they do not provide enough heat!).

If you wish to hand out blankets to people on the streets, we highly recommend going with a professional outreach group.
These groups already have relationships with many of the chronically homeless on the street. They are also trained to see
signs of mental issues, drug-induced behaviors, etc. For the safety of yourself and the homeless, we do think it is important
to not go out alone but instead with an outreach team. If you’d like more information on this, please let me know!

DONATION DROP-OFF

Donations may be dropped off at the Men’s Residential Center (245 N. Delaware St). They can distribute them to our other
locations, too! If you drive to back of the building (off of New York St.), look for yellow Donation signs and ring the doorbell
on the back door. Someone at the Front Desk should greet you momentarily. If, for some reason, no one comes right away
– call 317.636.2720. The guys at the Front Desk could be busy on the phone, checking guys into the building, etc. – so
they aren’t always free to come to the back right away!

CWC CHRISTMAS GIFT RESPONSE

Thank you so much for your generosity! Because the ages of the children can change weekly and even daily, giving age-
appropriate items can be difficult (such as toys, clothing, etc.). Also, part of the Family Development Program is to ensure
that mothers are taught how to be the providers for their children. It is extremely important for children to see that as well.

For example, a few years ago, a mom from program had saved up her money from her part-time job to buy her son a toy
truck for Christmas. A volunteer group came in and gave some more costly, fancy toys and the boy disregarded mom’s gift
and embraced the new ones. This was disheartening for the mom as she was so excited to provide her son with her own
savings. That year it was decided we need to protect both the moms and children, so an alternative plan was created.

The Center for Women has a ‘Christmas Shop’ full of donated clothes, toys, etc. and each year the mothers can shop for
their families. This way, moms can specifically pick out gifts for their children as well as give them out on Christmas
Day. We would be honored, blessed, and grateful if you would be a part of the Christmas Shop.
I have attached a copy of our Christmas List. This list is specifically for women at the Center. Any gifts from newborn to
teen are welcome!

We know people desire a hands-on experience, in which we would recommend other volunteer opportunities such as meal
service or Recreation Night, but we appreciate your understanding and support! Please let me know if you have any
questions!

COURT-ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE: OFFENSE?

Thank you for connecting with Wheeler Mission to fulfill Community Service hours. I saw you need to fulfill # hours of court-
ordered community service. What was your offense?

Thanks again for thinking of Wheeler and have a great day!

COURT-ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE: SIGNED UP, NEED TO REDIRECT TO OTHER OPTION

Thank you for connecting with Wheeler Mission to fulfill Community Service hours. To help us better track volunteers, times
served, and allows for more of a flexible schedule and more hours – serving at the Thrift Store will be available for you to
complete your hours.

You can do this online by logging into your Volunteer Profile at www.WheelerVolunteer.org, then self-scheduling for the
Thrift Store & Donation Center. This location is always in need of volunteers, so they will be grateful for your time and
energy!

If you have questions, let me know. Thanks again for thinking of Wheeler and have a great day!

COURT-ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE TURN AWAY

Thank you for connecting with Wheeler Mission to fulfill Community Service hours. At this time, Wheeler is blessed with a
high volume of volunteers to meet our needs and we are not scheduling court-ordered or probation-required community
service. We do appreciate your offer to serve and hopefully another time it will work out. A few other organizations I
suggest contacting for community service are the Salvation Army, Good News Ministries, Gleaners, and Keep Indianapolis
Beautiful.

Thanks again for thinking of Wheeler and have a great day!

REQUEST FROM BARBER / HAIR STYLIST

Thank you so much for your desire to donate your talents in hair to Wheeler – this goes such a long way to our guests.
Before we are able to get you scheduled, I have a few questions for you:
What day/date(s) are you able to volunteer?
What timeframe of service (i.e. 1PM-4PM)?
What “appointment” timeframe (i.e. 30 minute slots, etc.)?
How would you prefer people to arrive (i.e. clean dry hair, wet hair, etc.)?
Do you have experience cutting textured hair?
Will you be doing clipper cuts, scissors, etc.?
Due to our supplies, will be not be able to provide towels or capes. Will that pose any issues for you?
Other information:
Once I hear from you, that will help direct us where to go. Thanks again and have a great day!
ACADEMIC SHADOWING/COMMUNITY SERVICE

Thank you for email and desire to get involved at Wheeler! We may be able to accommodate your request. Do you have
paperwork that would need to be filled out after you are done? Since it is our busy season, knowing more about your school
requirements will help us know what may be the best fit.

There are certainly ways you can fulfill those hours outside of shadowing, though! Meal Service is a fantastic way to get
involved. Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, serving in this opportunity allows volunteers to get to know staff, guests
that are serving, can ask questions about how the shelter works, and get some interaction with guests. Plus, you can also
self-schedule for this opportunity and serve as you are able!

It is a user-friendly
system and allows volunteers to sign up for as many or few opportunities with just a few clicks! Once you are scheduled or
click you want more information, you will be sent an email. Some folks are finding those emails may be going to their spam
or junk folders. The email would have come from system@ecemail.samaritan.com. You may want to check!

If you have any questions, just let me know. Thank you so much and have a great day!

NEEDS SHADOWING, NOT VOLUNTEERING IN KITCHEN, ETC.

We definitely understand the desire to learn more “behind the scenes”. The next step is pretty easy – you need to register
as a volunteer! To create an account in our IMPACT system without needing to sign-up for a shift, please follow the
instructions below:

- Go to www.WheelerVolunteer.org
- Click on the ‘Log In’ button on the upper right hand side of the page and a box will drop down
- Click on the blue ‘Volunteer Login’ button, without entering anything in the Volunteer User ID and Password fields
- Click on the green ‘Apply to Become a Volunteer’ button located near the center of the screen
- Agree to the Waiver & Agreement
- Create a User ID and Password and fill out required fields in the application. For us to know you are an Ivy Tech
student, please be sure to include ‘Ivy Tech student in need of 12 hours’ as well as the days/dates and
timeframes you are available in the ‘Additional Information’ comment box toward the bottom of the
application.
- Once done, click ‘Submit My Application’

This goes straight to our Inbox and once received, we can place you on the necessary calendars and send confirmation
details to you!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Drumstick Dash

The Drumstick Dash is Wheeler’s largest fundraiser of the year! It is a 4.6 mile, fun-filled walk/run/jog (with a 2.75 short
course option) that is great for the entire family. This takes place in Broad Ripple on Thanksgiving morning and is the
fastest growing race in the state…we are anticipating nearly 21,000 participants this year! We are in need of volunteers
throughout the month of November to help with a variety of tasks! Volunteers are needed before the event to stuff goody
bags, help at packet pick-up, and much more. We have several wonderful opportunities on Thanksgiving morning from
working at Registration to handing out items in the Food Court to much more! For more information about volunteer
opportunities at the Dash and to sign up to volunteer, go to www.DrumstickDash.org.

If you have any other questions, please let us know. We would love to have you there!
