Dear Mrs. Dudley,

It has been my pleasure to tutor Selah this semester. Selah’s tutoring sessions were
designed to include individualized, tailored literacy instruction in the areas of oral
reading fluency, word knowledge (spelling/phonics/sight words), comprehension,
and writing.

Recently, I administered several progress monitoring assessments to gauge Selah’s

growth since September. Selah is making consistent gains in automatic word
recognition and word knowledge. The ability to read words automatically within a
fraction of a second is a marker of proficient readers. Selah automatically reads
isolated primer level (75%) words with accuracy. When given additional time to
decode these same words, Selah’s accuracy improves to 90%. However, her ability
to read first grade words with accuracy and automaticity drops to 45%. These
findings, along with her oral reading, suggest that Selah is reading on a first-grade
instructional reading level, guided reading level I. She started the year on guided
reading level G.

Selah’s word study, or spelling instruction, goes hand-in-hand with the

improvements in automatic word recognition and decoding. Despite an initial
assessed need for more instruction in spelling CVCe words, Selah is now more
consistent in accurately representing simple CVCe long vowel patterns (i.e., bake,
tape, kite, etc.). Presently, our focus of instruction has turned to more challenging
long vowel patterns, such as CVVC (boat, peach, steep, etc.).

I am very pleased with the progress Selah is making. She is a pleasure to work with
and I look forward to his continued gains over the coming weeks. Should you have
further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 434-239-
0303.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Jacobs, M.Ed.
