Himawari 8 & 9

1. Introduction of Remote Sensing

2. Details about the Sensor

(Himawari means "sunflower" in Japanese)

 Japanese geostationary weather satellite

 Operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
 constructed by Mitsubishi Electric with assistance from Boeing
 has finer spatial resolution (0.5–2 km, compared to 1–4 km for MTSAT) and precision
(12–14-bit images, vs 10-bit for MTSAT).
 has higher temporal resolution; that is, new images are recorded more frequently, with
one ‘full disk’ scan of the observable area every ten minutes
 Orbit height: 35,793 km
 Launch date Himawari 8: October 7, 2014
 Launched date Himawari 9: November 02, 2016 (06:20:00 UTC)
