Approval Date: February 1, 2012

by the applicable Standards Committee.

Case 2710
Application of the ASME Certification Mark
Sections I, IV, X, XII

Inquiry: In the 2011 Addenda to the 2010 Edition of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,
the ASME Code Symbols shown below:

were replaced by the single ASME Certification Mark shown below:

which must be accompanied by the appropriate Designator required by the Code of construction.
May a Certificate Holder continue to use one of the ASME Code Symbols listed in the 2010 Edition
beyond the six-month period after which revisions to the Code published in the 2011 Addenda become
mandatory?

Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that the ASME Code Symbols listed in the 2010 Edition
may be used until December 31, 2012.

The Committee’s function is to establish rules of safety, relating only to pressure integrity, governing the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and
nuclear components, and inservice inspection for pressure integrity of nuclear components and transport tanks, and to interpret these rules when questions arise
regarding their intent. This Code does not address other safety issues relating to the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components,
and the inservice inspection of nuclear components and transport tanks. The user of the Code should refer to other pertinent codes, standards, laws, regulations or
other relevant documents.
