Art as mimesis (Plato)

Mimesis , basic theoretical principle in

the creation of art. The word is Greek
and means “imitation” (though in the
sense of “re-presentation” rather than
of “copying”). Plato and Aristotle spoke
of mimesis as the re-presentation of
nature. According to Plato, all artistic
creation is a form of imitation: that
which really exists (in the “world of
ideas”) is a type created by God; the
concrete things man perceives in his
existence are shadowy representations
of this ideal type.

Art as representation (Aristotle)

Bust of Aristotle , Greek philosopher

For many philosophers, both ancient
and modern, man is regarded as the
"representational animal" or animal
symbolicum, the creature whose
distinct character is the creation and
the manipulation of signs – things that
"stand for" or "take the place of"
something else

Aristotle (384—322 B.C.E.)

Aristotle is a towering figure in ancient
Greek philosophy, making contributions
to logic, metaphysics, mathematics,
physics, biology, botany, ethics ,
politics, agriculture, medicine, dance
and theatre.

Plato and Aristotle are key figures in

early literary theory who considered
literature as simply one form of
representation.
Art for art’s sake (Kant)

Art enthusiast or not, this is a phrase

many of us in the 21st Century will be
familiar with. On questions of why we
create and value art, “art for art’s
sake” argues judgement should not be
made based on how well work serves
external purposes, such as moral or
political commentary. Instead, value is
intrinsically defined by the aesthetic
impression.

Piet Mondrian, ‘Composition II in Red,

Blue and Yellow’, 1930, Before gaining
such popularity, German philosopher
Immanuel Kant qualified “art for art’s
sake” as a mode of approaching art
in The Critique of Judgement (1790).
Declaring content, subject matter, and
any other external demands obsolete,
Kant argued the purpose of art is to
be “purposeless”

Conceptual art is not entirely centred

around debates on form. It can equally
exhibit deeply provocative thoughts on
the external world. Ai Weiwei, for
instance, draws upon minimalist
constructions in A Ton of Tea (2007);
however, its explanatory title provides
a new dimension to the piece.
Art as an escape

Oil painting “Lighthouse in Prince

Edward Island”
I’ve always thought of art as a
powerful means of awakening a sense
of wonder in our otherwise dull lives.
Art as something that grounds us in
instinctive knowledge, but that can
elevate our thoughts and souls. Art
has the capacity to change not only
the viewer and appreciator of art, but
the artists themselves.

Romblon is known as the “Marble

Country” due to its bountiful deposits
of marble, which are mainly used in
construction and sculpture. In fact, it
is believed that the substructures of
the islands are made of marble.Way
back in 1900’s, mining in Romblon
started.

However, it was only after World

War II that the importance of marble
was given due attention and
introduction to the market. With
various lively colors combined with the
intricate natural art lines and shades.
Romblon’s marble easily transforms into
an exotic material that is suitable and
attractive for the construction
industry.

Palawan culture originally came

from the islands of Cuyo, Agutaya,
Cagayancillo and Calamianes, but today
has spread all over Palawan; the
Tagbanua can be found primarily in the
mainland and the Calamianes; the
Batak and Pala’wan spread thinly in
the mainland; while the Ken-uy or
Ta’ut-bato are found only in the
south-western towns of Quezon and
Rizal.

Culture and arts of Palawan are

as diverse as its 1700 plus islands.
Aside from the natives of the
province, Palawan is now a place of
convergence of Filipinos from different
parts of the country.

Palawan has, among its cultural

heritage, the Cuyunon, Agutaynen,
Cagayanen, Calamian, Tagbanua,
Batak, Pala’wan (Palawanon), Ken-uy
(Ta’ut-bato) and Molbog.

Architecture

Romanesque Art/ Architecture

In Europe in the period that is

known as the early Middle Ages was
developed between the XI and XII
centuries what is known as Romanesque
art

Significant Aspects about Romanesque

Art

– The art period up to 1000AD

is referred to as Pre-Romanesque art
and after that date as Romanesque
Art.

– Early art subjects were

initially limited to the production of
Pietistic painting (religious art or
Christian art) in the form of
illuminated manuscripts, mosaics
and fresco paintings in church

Romanesque painting

Painting in Romanesque period has

a notable development, because the
vast space of smooth walls were
appropriate to the pictorial decoration;
therefore, the painting was also
a subordinated art to the
architecture.
Music

Microtonal music or microtonality is

the use in music of microtones—
intervals smaller than a semitone, also
called "microintervals". It may also be
extended to include any music using
intervals not found in the customary
Western tuning of twelve equal
intervals per octave.

In music, modulation is most

commonly the act or process of
changing from one key (tonic, or tonal
center) to another. This may or may
not be accompanied by a change in key
signature. Modulations articulate or
create the structure or form of many
pieces, as well as add interest.

Soul making also has to do with

desire for social justice.

The soul’s tendency to pathologize,
