2.5 Postulates and Paragraph Proofs
Objecves:
1. You will idenfy and apply the basic postulates about points, lines, and planes.
Example 1:
Explain how the figure illustrates that each statement
is true. Then state the postulate that can be used to show each statement is true.
a) The planes J and K intersect at line m.
The two planes meet on the line m.
Postulate: If two planes intersect,
then their intersection is a line.
b) The lines l and m intersect at point Q.
The point Q lies on line m and line l.
Postulate: If two lines intersect, then their
intersection is exactly one point.
Example 2:
Determine whether the following statements are always, somemes , or never
true. Explain
a) The intersecon of two planes contains at least two points.
Always
The intersection of two planes is a line, and a line contains at
least two points.
b) If three planes have a point in common, then they have a whole line in
common.
Sometimes
They might have only that single point in common.

Example 3: →
In the figure, line m and TQ lie in plane A. State the postulate that can be used to
show that each statement is true.
a) Points L, and T and line m lie in the same plane.
Postulate 2.5: If two points lie in a plane, then the
entire line containing those points lies in that plane.
↔
b) Line m and ST intersect at T.
Postulate 2.6: If two lines intersect, then their intersection
is exactly one point.
Example 4:
LOGIC Points A, B, and C are noncollinear. Points B, C, and D are noncollinear. Points
A, B, C, and D are noncoplanar. Describe two planes that intersect in line BC.
The plane that contains A, B, and C and the plane that contains B, C,
and D.
Example 5:
ROOFING Noel and Kirk are building a new roof. They wanted a roof with two sloping
planes that meet along a curved arch. Is this possible?
Such a roof is impossible because two intersecting planes
intersect in a straight line.

Example 6:
TRIANGULATION A sailor spots a whale through her binoculars. She wonders how far
away the whale is, but the whale does not show up on the radar system. She sees
another boat in the distance and radios the captain asking him to spot the whale and
record its direcon. Explain how this added informaon could enable the sailor to
pinpoint the locaon of the whale. Under what circumstance would this idea fail?
The two sailors create two lines of sight that intersect at the whale.
Because two intersecting lines intersect in exactly one point, there can
be no doubt where the whale is. However, if the two boats and the
whale are collinear, the idea will not work.
Example 7:
AIRLINES An airline company wants to provide service to San Francisco, Los Angeles,
Chicago, Dallas, Washington D.C., and New York City. The company’s CEO draws lines
between each pair of cies in the list on a map. No three of the cies are collinear. How
many lines did the CEO draw?

between any 2 points, and Sourthside
8) Never ; A line contains at least 2 points. Blvd is the line between point A and
point B, it is the shortest distance

those pts lies in that plane.
37) Thru any 2 pts, there is exactly 1 line.

38) Thru any 3 noncollienar pts, there is exactly 1 line.
39) A plane contains at least 3 noncollinear points.
40) If 2 lines ∩, then their intersection is exactly 1 point.
41) If 2 planes ∩, then their intersection is a line.

plane P.
18) b) Line a is perpendicular to
plane P.

19) The top edge of the bottom layer of the cake
is a straight line n. Points C,D,& K lie along
this edge, so they lie along line n. Postulate
2.3; A line contains at least 2 points.
20) Only 1 line can be drawn between the points
D and H. Postulate 2.1; thru any 2 pts,
there is exactly one line.
21) The bottom right part of the cake is a side.
The side contains points K,E,F, & G and forms
a plane. Postulate 2.2; thru any 3 noncollinear
pts, there is exactly one plane.
22) The bottom part of the cake is a side. Connecting
the points E and F forms a line, which is
contained on this side. Postulate 2.5; if 2 points
lie in a plane, then the entire line containing those
points lies in that plane.
23) The top edges of the bottom layer form intersecting
lines. Lines h and g of this cake intersect only once
at point J. Postulate 2.6; if 2 lines intersect, then
their intersection is exactly one point.
24) Always ; Thru any 3 noncollinear pts,
there is exactly 1 plane

26) Sometimes ; the pts don't have to be collinear to
lie in a plane.
27) Always ; If 2 pts lie in a plane, then the entire line
containing the points lies in the plane.
