Resending this email just in case you were offline last week.

As a follow-up to our mid-year meetings regarding the EL experience, I would like to move
forward with the plan to provide you with weekly common planning time on Tuesday
afternoon's between 2:15 pm and 3:45 pm with the first session tentatively scheduled for
Tuesday, January 8th. You will be paid at the contractual rate of $35 per hour.

I ask that your work be aligned to our school's instructional priorities shown below.

1. Complex Texts:   Use complex texts with ALL students across subject areas to build
knowledge and make sense of content by reading, thinking, talking and writing about
relevant topics
2. High Quality Tasks: Pose high-quality, standards-aligned questions and tasks to engage
students in meaningful work, critical thinking, productive struggle and evidence-
based discussion

Additionally, I would ask the team to explore appropriate strategies to use with English
Language Learners around the four domains of
language development (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Specifically, you should
consider examining and implementing a few
of the research-based strategies listed below:
7-Step Vocabulary Method
Sentence Frames
Modeling Think Alouds
Reciprocal Teaching
Double Entry Journals
Cornell Notes
Close Reading with Text Dependent Questions
Identifying and Analyzing Text Features
Academic Discussion Continuum
After identifying a few high leverage strategies for your content area and purpose, you should
collaborate on products to share with members of your department, the Instructional
Leadership Team, Equity Team and eventually the entire WHS staff.

Please let me know if you are interested in pursuing this professional development
opportunity.

Happy New Year.

Hi Everyone!

We are very excited about the opportunity to work with you. Several of us in the ESL department have worked
intensively together this year to create meaningful lessons that combine state and WiDA standards. We hope you don't
mind if we add to this discussion on research based strategies.
The research based strategies mentioned above are key to reaching all students. The following is a list of strategies
that are specific to language learners. They comprise what is taught in RETELL and in Master's programs in TESOL
and Applied Linguistics.

1) Assess background knowledgeboth of content and language. REMEMBER: students bring many
assets to the table. Look at what they can do! (Asset vs deficit model!)
2) Relevancy is keymake it relevant to them, and don't assume all students will find the same content
relevant.
3) Analyze what language structures are necessary (vocabulary, grammar, etc) to access the content.
4) Preteach important language structures (here is where the 7Step Method or Sentence Frames can be
used)
5) Preteach important background information.
6) Scaffold reading and listening texts so students can comprehend themthis is an old article but still
relevant today: http://ccgps7socialstudies.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/82948606/Assessing%20Reading%
20Levels%20for%20ESL%20Students.pdf
7)  Use comprehensible input

Finally, Colorin Colorado offers a flowchart in working together collaboratively : http://www.colorincolorado.
org/sites/default/files/EssentialActionsChart.pdf

On behalf of the ESL department, I'd like to thank Paul for this opportunity. I (Deborah) currently have an obligation on
Tuesdays but hope to be part of this in the future. Please feel free to reach out to me if I can be of any assistance.

Best Wishes,
