This document provides instructions for assignment 9, a computer program to analyze a 2D cantilever beam under large deflections using an updated Lagrangian formulation with the Newton-Raphson or direct iterative technique. Students are asked to develop a program using this method, submit the program listing and output validating the method on a cantilever beam with a uniform load, and include any necessary tables or graphs.

Develop a computer program using the updated Lagrangian formulation for 2D
elastic bodies with large deflections and strains, but not update the constitutive matrix. Use either the Newton–Raphson or direct iterative technique to solve the nonlinear equations (use a tolerance of ¯ = 0.01 for the convergence on displacements). Submit (a) program listing, (b) output for the validation problem, which consists of a 2D cantilever beam under uniform load (see Chapter 9 for the details of computer implementation and the problem description and results); and (c) necessary tables and graphs. The stresses should be post-computed in a subroutine.
