Summary: This article describes and analyzes various literacy assessments that are used in the
classroom. More specifically, the authors of this article pay close attention to how accurately the
literacy assessments measure the performance of students from diverse backgrounds. The
backgrounds of the students used in the study were from diverse linguistic, cultural, and
economic backgrounds. The article concluded with many suggestions for how literacy
assessments should be administered so that they are accurate and fair for every student in the
classroom. The main suggestion was that the reliance on group testing should be limited.
Students deserve personal attention and assurance that they understand what the test is
asking.
