General Math Lesson Plan

Grade: 10 Unit: Factor and Remainder Theorem Week: 10

Unit Objective: Vocabulary:

- Familiarize the students with the - Polynomials, coefficient, degree,
polynomials vocabulary. constant term, equation identity
- The students should be able to use the - Theorem
two theorems seen in class. - Dividend, divisor, quotient, remainder,
- In general, teaching the students to use - Factor, exactly divisible
a theorem, using the correct
hypothesis, formulation, and conclusion

Lesson Objective – Review on long division/polynomial division

Learning Plan:

 Review on long division with numbers

o Show an example of long division
o Students perform a few long division, write the answer as an equation
o Check the answers
o Review on properties about remainder (𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟 < 𝑑𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑟, 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟 =
0 ⇒factor)
 Review on polynomial division
o Define polynomial and other vocab (coefficient, degree, constant term, …)
o Students use the new words in sentences to describe a polynomial
o Show an example of polynomial division
o By comparison to long division, students try to find a property about the remainder
(degree of the remainder < degree of the divisor)
o Students do a myimaths exercise on polynomial division

Assessment – In class participation (answering questions and asking questions), myimaths exercise

Homework – Watch the video about polynomials identity

Lesson Objective – Definition of Identity

Learning Plan:

 Video: Equation vs. Identity

o Show the difference between an equation and an identity
o Example on how to find unknown coefficient in an identity by using two method:
substitution and identification
 Lesson: Exercises on identity
o Warm-up: Use sentences to describe a polynomial and solving of the video’s problem
o Students work in pair on exercises 2 to 11 even numbers for about 15 to 20 minutes
o Students switch to group, and solve, on the white board, exercise 12 and 13
o Students work alone to solve questions 2 to 11 odd numbers

Assessment – Participation, asking questions to students during exercises, asking for explanation during
group work

Homework – Watch the video on Remainder theorem

Lesson Objective – Using the remainder theorem, understanding/reviewing the concept of theorem

Learning Plan:

 Video:
o Definition of Theorem
 Explain what a theorem is, and the vocabulary associated to it (hypothesis, conclusion)
o Remainder Theorem
 Present the Remainder Theorem
 Show a proof of the theorem
 Explain a few examples
 Exercises on Remainder Theorem
o Warm-up: solve the practice problem, draw parallel to long division
o Students alternate work in groups/pairs/individual
o Ask students what does that mean if remainder = 0 (subject of next video)

Assessment – Participation, Checking on students during the exercises, correction on the board

Homework – Watch the video on Factor theorem

Lesson Objective – Using the Factor theorem, reviewing the concept of theorem

Learning Plan:

 Video: Factor Theorem

o Review of the remainder theorem
o Show example of remainder theorem use, leading to Factor theorem (P(a)=0)
o Explain a few examples

 Exercises on Factor Theorem

o Warm-up: Solving of practice problem and parallel to long division and factor
o Students alternate work in groups/pairs/individual
o Ask students to think of uses for this theorem (finding factors of a cubic expression)

Assessment – Participation, Checking on students during the exercises, correction on the board

Homework – Watch the video on Solving cubic equations

Lesson Objective – Solving cubic equations using the factor theorem

Learning Plan:

 Video: Solving cubic equations

o Review of the factor theorem
o Show an example of solving a cubic equation
o Show how to sketch the graph using 4 points

 Lesson: Exercises
o Warm-up: Solving of practice problem and review of video
o Students work in pair to solve cubic equations, and sketch their graphs

Assessment – Participation, Checking on students during the exercises

Homework – Finish the exercises (Solve and sketch)
