Teacher(s): Allison Judy and Ileana Lesson Title: Subject: Balancing Chemical
Iannucci Balance is Key Equations
Lesson Objective: Introduce the importance of stoichiometry in chemical equations by teaching
students how to write balanced equations.
Essential Question: How can I write a balanced chemical equation when given an unbalanced
reaction?
Background Information
Introduction: Recall previous discussion on chemical equations and appropriate notations of
chemical formulas and reaction schemes. Move toward advancing students’ chemical reaction
notation by having them identify unbalanced reactions which don’t denote the proper amounts of
each component...like a recipe with the ingredients listed but no amounts.

LESSON PLAN – 5-E Model

ENGAGE: Students will be tasked with a “Do Now” activity that helps them recall/or introduce to
them the theory of conservation of matter (EdPuzzle video).

EXPLORE: Students will explore the implications of the conservation of matter by summarizing the
information presented in the video (interactive questioning). Students will walk through steps (drag
and drop; interactive quiz) that help them identify when a chemical reaction requires balancing.
The teacher will guide them through the steps of balancing an equation with an example
(worksheet).
EXPLAIN: Students will pair up and be tasked to solve an unbalanced equations. They will
share/present their answer in front of the classroom. The class will collectively solve the
worksheet.

Vocabulary:
Balanced Reaction
Stoichiometry
Conservation of Matter

ELABORATE: Student’s will be assigned another worksheet of unbalanced equations for homework.

EVALUATE:
A quiz will be administered in the next class period to test students’ knowledge and skills in
balancing chemical equations.
Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion):
This will be done during the worksheet group work.

Summative Assessment (Quiz / Project / Report):

A quiz will be administered at the end of the lesson to gauge their understanding of the subject.
Differentiation/Support (ELL,SpEd,Gate/Honors):
Given that chemical equations require basic numbers and element symbols (letters), ELL should be
able to follow along with relative ease. However, for students having trouble, extra worksheets will
be provided with a more focused breakdown of steps for balancing. Study hall or after school
tutoring could also be offered. Tutoring would first be offered with student to student vs teacher to
student. Honors students or accelerated students can be given more difficult problems if they
request them.
