The question I mostly used when finding my sources was, is the death penalty
humane? My full inquiry question is, If neither lethal injection, nor any other form of
execution, be made painless, would this fact justify the abolition of the death penalty? I
did not want to put in my whole inquiry question because it is kind of long so instead I
like to use keywords that relate to my question. I used keywords such as “lethal
injection”, “death penalty”, and “capital punishment”. These keywords gave me a broad
amount of research and then from there, I went into the different sources and read to
see if they were talking about anything relating to my question. I did not use the Google
search engine at all, but I did use Encyclopedia Britannica and CQ Researcher. From
Britannica I got two sources, and from CQ Researcher I got three sources. Some
information I got from my resources included: the history of capital punishment, what
exactly capital punishment is, arguments for and against the death penalty, what lethal
injection is, how lethal injection became about, President Trump’s view on capital
punishment, how the Constitution challenges the death penalty, different states actions,
etc. From the hits I found, the kind of information that is being displaying is mainly about
the challenges that are faced when using the death penalty. By that I mean, how some
states rule it unconstitutional, how the lethal injection drug can expire, the pain of lethal
injection, the cost, and drug shortages. Some of the subjects I am finding within my
topic are mainly about lethal injection, the Constitution, state policies, and the death
penalty/capital punishment. One source in particular that I like a lot is titled “Death
Penalty” by Christina L. Lyons. I found it on the source CQ Researcher and it was
published on 18 October, 2018. I found this source interesting because it points out a lot
of controversial topics regarding the death penalty. The question the article answers is,
will capital punishment survive new challenges? Some topics this article goes over in
particular include: death penalty being used harshly on drug dealers, the rate of the
death penalty on a rise since 2017, the states who are using the death penalty,
opponents of the death penalty, constitutional challenges against capital punishment,
pharmaceutical companies and their image, and the battle to get the drug (lethal
injection). My working knowledge did not really change much on my understanding on
the death penalty. I think there are a lot of challenges to capital punishment and it could
be on a decline in the next century or two.
