ance Bannister’s steady hands and slow,
precise speech represent something of
a miracle. Weeks ago, Bannister, who
suffers from multiple sclerosis, could barely
walk to the end of his street. His vision had
deteriorated, and his mind was trapped in a
thick mental fog.
He is one of close to 75,000 Canadians who
suffer from MS, a disease that causes chronic
pain, bowel and bladder failure, muscle spasms
and speech difficulties.
There is still no cure for the disease, but an
experimental surgery called the “liberation
procedure” may provide MS sufferers the
hope of recovering.
However, the surgery is not available in
Canada, and the medical community has been
slow to recognize it.
As a result, Bannister became one of hun-
dreds of Canadians who opted to leave the
country to have the procedure performed at a
private clinic.
The fog has lifted, he says. He is jogging, his
vision has returned and he hopes to get his
driver’s license back within a few months.
“It’s incredible,” Bannister says of his recent
transformation. “The last year has been really
