HEARING HEALTH
To the family of Chelsea Smith,
My name is Kristen Dalrymple and I am your
child’s audiologist at school. It is a pleasure to have Chelsea
in class. This month, we have been working on auditory
training, specifically learning to listen. We are using
activities to build our awareness to sounds and well as the
discrimination of verbal and non-verbal stimuli.
Chelsea and I have been working on comprehension
questions after reading a short story. These comprehension
questions will help train her to listen to important parts of
the story. Due to Chelsea’s profound hearing loss, it is very
difficult for her to listen to long stories or speeches, so these
comprehension skills will strengthen her listening skills and
will help her be able to attend to stories in school and in
conversation.

Chelsea and I have also been working on digit
memorization. Recall is very difficult for children with
hearing loss because of the uncertainty that the information
was heard correctly. Digits are especially hard because
many digits are only one syllable, which is very hard to
interpret for those with hearing loss. Digit memorization is
important to help Chelsea’s memory while also helping her
recognize numbers in everyday use.
Chelsea has been very successful this year in her
auditory therapy. She has made massive progress on her
practice and her speech is much clearer. Next unit, we will
work on monologues and full story retell to further improve
her speech. Thanks to her family for dedicating to help her
practice her skills!
