RUBBER “HEVEA” PLANTATION IN POLOMOLOK_CHAPTER VII SOCIO-ECONOMIC STUDY

Chapter VII

Socio- Economic Study

In this Chapter presents the Contribution to the

Philippine economy, the generation of employment and the

social desirability

7.1 Contribution to the Philippine economy

Natural Rubber Latex is very valuable to our country,

Rubber tires, Rubber bands and other Rubber products could

not be made without this raw material. The Philippine

rubber industry aims to propel domestically-produced rubber

products to become a key contributor to Philippine economic

development by transforming the industry to produce world-

class, competitive and high quality rubber products. Latex

a raw material that helps the Rubber industries and other

companies who manufactured tires, rubber bands, rubber

sheets and etc. to improve and grow widely. The Philippines

has been among the top ranking countries in rubber

production until the 80’s, when demand for car tires and

other rubber-made products slowed down following the

decline in the Japanese and European economies. In recent

times, however, the Philippine market for rubber product

has demonstrated new vitality shown by the increasing

demand for rubber-made goods. The agri- products is covered

by the new train law.

7.2 Employment generation

The act of employing or state of being employed.

Creating jobs is a keystone of any economic recovery

program. Many activities can fall under the rubric of job

creation, including immediate short-term opportunities that

yield quick impact, or the development of more enduring

livelihoods in the civil service or private sector. It is

important to distinguish between these different

activities, recognizing that sustainability and long-term

impact should be duly considered in implementing any

employment generation program. Providing jobs is vital on

many levels. Politically, employment opportunities give the

population a stake in the peace process by providing young

men and women with alternatives to violence.

Economically, employment provides income to poor families,

revives domestic demand for goods and services, and

stimulates overall growth. Socially, employment can

also promote social healing, encourage the return of

displaced persons, and improve social welfare in the long

run. The owners just get only two employees, one is a staff

that works in office and the other one is security guard

that works at evening to keep the entire plantation in safe

manner. The previous generation of having this kind of

business is the same as the owners run for now. The only

thing that the owners do is to improve and develop more to

encourage other companies and Industries.

7.3 Social desirability

The researchers interviewed two persons from different

areas. These persons gave their time and effort to give

some information about the study. The researchers did not

made any surveys, data of Demand and Supply were directly

got at North Cotabato. One of the owner of a plantation

gave us a booklet that indicates the information about

Rubber and also state the companies in North Cotabato who

processed Natural Rubber Latex to become a sheet. Rubber

plantations are encroaching the indigenous rain forests at

a large scale. Many rare plant and animal species are

endangered by this development, the natural water

management is disturbed. It aims at an assessment of the

environmental benefits accruing from a reforestation

project partly reversing the deforestation that has taken

place over the past years. Local people’s awareness of the

environmental problems caused by increasing rubber

plantation is quite high and that in spite of the economic

advantages of rubber plantation there is a positive

willingness among the local population to contribute

financially to a reduction of existing rubber plantations

for the sake of a partial restoration of the local rain

forest.
