ABSTRACT

Procrastination is a prevalent phenomenon experienced in different

settings worldwide. Often, a negative notion is attributed to this wherein
phenomena such as Filipino Time and Mañana Habit are examples in
accordance to the Filipino culture (Aguirre, 2014; Tan, 2016). This study
aims to determine the perspectives of Grade 12 - Health Allied students
on traditional procrastination. Traditional procrastination is the maladaptive
response in replacement of adaptive behavior. The research used a
qualitative phenomenological approach and a semi - structured, open -
ended interview was utilized to attain data and warm and cold analysis
was utilized to analyze such data. The results yielded emerging themes
and patterns wherein the data were categorized into: (a) root where it was
discovered that there are different causes of the respondents’
procrastination such as confidence and prioritization of enjoyment, social
influence, lack of motivation, laziness, pessimism, technological advances,
and self-causation. Moreover, it was observed that the respondents are
aware of such causal factors. (b) Result where the actions of
procrastination affect each respondent in ways that include emotional
stress, strain on health and sleep patterns, academic performance, and
working under pressure, and (c) response wherein the respondents pose
various ways in attempt to mitigate, avoid, and prevent procrastination.
Therefore, although there were positive perceptions on traditional
procrastination such that it helps in stress handling, the negative
perceptions were still prominent. Along with the negative perceptions,
many try to change such behavior but fail to do so.

CHAPTER I

This chapter contains the background, statement of the problem,

and philosophical underpinnings of the study. It also contains the
significance, scope and limitations, and the definition of terms of the
research.

INTRODUCTION

Procrastination is an interactive occurrence in which one disregards

or delays a timely attendance to an obligatory assignment or judgment
and subsequently leads to some potentially unpleasant and undesirable
consequences that are caused by multiple factors (Balkis & Duru, 2007).
Over the last decades, a considerable amount of literature had been
published on procrastination and its causes, and consequences in
different aspects of life (Beutel, Klein, Aufenager, Brähler, Dreier, Müller,
et al., 2016). Such event manifests that procrastination is a prevalent
phenomenon experienced globally in different work settings, and even in
simple daily activities of people that causes distress and inconvenience to
an individual’s life.

Traditional Procrastination, also known as passive

procrastination, is the behavior of a person that replaces adaptive
behaviors with maladaptive behaviors (Westgate, Wormingtom, Oleson, &
Lindgren, 2016) and is attained when procrastination is not intended to be
done but still occurs due to the inability to make quick and effective
decisions or to the pressure of an upcoming task (Choi & Chu as cited in
the Journal Dissertation by Ismail, 2016). An individual who experiences
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2

such event succumbs to negative force thus, making more complications

that affect the person’s lifestyle as a whole.

Background of the Study

Such phenomenon is very rampant among the Filipinos. It is in the

Filipino culture and is rooted in its identity and daily life; which is evident in
the different attributes linked to the Filipinos such as the Mañana Habit
and the so called Filipino Time. Studies have also shown that
procrastination is linked to high levels of perceived stress, depression,
fatigue, and reduced life satisfaction across a whole range of domains
(Beutel et.al, 2016). Several studies also show negative correlations
between procrastination and the academic performance of students. This
implies that students who exercise procrastination highly garnered low
average on their academic performance. An increase in procrastination
leads to a decrease in grades (Joubert, 2015). Amidst its prominence, the
problem is unaddressed and has become a norm in the society.

The prevalence of such phenomenon in the society sparked the

researchers’ interest and curiosity; thus making a study which aims to
determine the perspectives of Grade 12 Senior High School - Health Allied
(SHS - HA) students through a series of semi-structured interviews
utilizing open-ended questions to gather data then to analyze and interpret
such information later on.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 3

Statement of the Problem and Objectives of the Study

The study aims to determine and analyze the perspectives of SHS -

HA students on traditional procrastination in order to create a clearer view
of the phenomenon.
1. How do you perceive procrastination?
2. Do you perceive yourself as a procrastinator?
3. Why do you procrastinate?

Philosophical Underpinnings

A qualitative study of the phenomenon of procrastination

requires a deep understanding of how perceptions and interpretations of
different experiences are diverse as humans are also diverse beings. With
this, a paradigm of ontological, epistemological, and methodological
components are vital in the understanding of the said research. (Scotland,
2012). Kuhn (1962) is responsible for introducing the concept of
‘paradigm’ into philosophical, scientific, and everyday discourse. The
outcomes of the study use the philosophical underpinnings as a backbone
in terms of credibility as supported by the different approaches that were
utilized. Through these approaches and the use of other philosophical
tools, research processes, outcomes, processes of inquiry, and insights
are better justified, defended, and clarified (Kincheloe & Berry, 2004, p.
8).The philosophical underpinnings, through the justification, the credibility
of the research is strengthened (Sikes, 2004) and is able to “secure the
quality of the research produced” (Snape & Spencer, 2003, p. 1).

As stated by Scotland (2012), ontological assumptions deal with

what constitutes reality. The study makes use of constructivism while
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 4

following an interpretivist philosophical approach. These two approaches

can be correlated with each other since interpretivism poses that
knowledge is a product of social construct, thus implying that “truth is
relative to the groups that produce and consume the research” (Willis,
Jost, & Nilakanta, 2009). On the other hand, constructivism is a form of
realism where reality can only be known in a personal and subjective way
(Tobin & Tippins, 1993 as cited by Jones & Araje, 2002, p. 3).

This research is mainly focused on the perception of the students

on procrastination. It uses a constructivist approach because the data
gathered by the researchers were derived from the participants’ thinking
and rationality. In this sense, the epistemology of the study gives support
and foundation on the data analyzed by the researchers.

“Interpretivism refers to the approaches which emphasize the

meaningful nature of people’s character and participation in both social
and cultural life” (Elster, 2007; Walsham, 1995 as cited by Chowdhury,
2014, p. 433). This shows deviation from the conventions of natural
science which pose that society constructs human knowledge wherein it is
also called social construct. In other words, the perception of reality is
derived from what is established in the society and not from personal
experience (Eliaeson, 2002; McIntosh, 1997). Reasons, causes, and
explanations of human interactions and experiences are sought for by
interpretivists in order to understand human behavior (Whitley, 1984). In
Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason (1781/2003), he claimed that
different interpretations may be derived from one same experience and
that people do not interpret the events and happenings as they are. (Willis
et al., 2009).
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 5

These accounts justify the data collected and gathered by the

researchers through a series of semi-structured, open ended interviews
which is in line with the claim that humans interpret their sensations. Also,
through these interpretations, meanings are found behind certain actions
and behaviours. Interpretivism supports the methods to be used in this
study along with the data to be analyzed since it originates from the
respondents’ subjective interpretation of one's behavior or their own
actions towards procrastination.

The study aims to know how procrastinators perceive traditional

procrastination. The ontology of this research was implemented by
recognizing that the reality of social experiences undergone by the
respondents are products of independently-lived events and the
epistemology would be that these would be discovered, treated, and
presented without the inclusion of the researchers’ own conceptions and
preconceptions (Scott & Morrison, 2007). This is of much importance to
the reliability of the research due to the fair, objective, and unbiased way
of the researchers in analyzing the data gathered.

The interpretivist approach followed by the study argues that the

research methods used by positivists in the study of natural sciences
cannot be used in understanding human behavior since individuals
perceive the environment subjectively and have their own, different
subjective realities (Willis et al., 2009). The research delves into the
experiences of each participant in relation to how they react to their
external environment in hopes of understanding the root causes of their
behavior leading to procrastination, and to further analyze and interpret
the information that emerged from the interview. This approach considers
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 6

the differences in the interpretations of individuals participating in the said

research.

These chosen philosophical techniques in going through the whole

process of the study are carefully considered and examined so that it
would fit the best approach required by the characteristics of the research;
given the different variables of the said research which indicates social
studies involving the behavior of human beings. This, then, is to serve as
the foundation of the study in which it is expected to elucidate the
individual differences of each person and how they are related with others
in forming the holistic phenomenon of procrastination.

Significance of the Study

This research tackling the Perspectives of Health Allied students could be

beneficial to:

Students. Knowing that procrastination is highly observed in the

academic setting, the said research could be of great help to address its
prominence among students as the unceasing targets of procrastination
for it will aid in giving a better understanding to the aforementioned
beneficiaries through the emerging themes that will be discussed in the
study.

Work Performance. This research is beneficial to the working

professionals for they are also one of those greatly affected by
procrastination. Procrastination is not only limited in academic setting but
also observed and is evident in workplaces as well. The research would
be beneficial to these professionals as it deals with the rate of productivity
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 7

and work performance. The research could be used as a starting point to

dealing with procrastination and to maximize the productivity of the
professional in the working environment.

Future researchers. This study gives emphasis on the observed

patterns of student procrastination that other researchers may tackle in
order to alleviate the recurrence of the phenomenon being studied.
Furthermore, this research could fill gaps of existing studies and could
serve as a springboard for the discovery of new knowledge.

Scope and Limitations

The researchers aim to study the Perspectives of SHS - HA

students on traditional procrastination. This study was conducted in the
vicinity of a Catholic University in Manila. The target respondents of the
study were under the SHS Health - Allied strand. Twenty (20) students
from the said strand who experiences procrastination were selected. The
duration of the study is on the academic year 2018 - 2019, starting from
September 2018 to April 2019.

Definition of Terms
The following terms were used in the qualitative research.
These conceptual and operational terms were present during research:

Active procrastination. It is more of a productive type of

procrastination wherein it is suggested that the results of the
aforementioned regarding academic performance are similar to those of
the non-procrastinators (Chu & Choi, 2005). In this study, active
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 8

procrastination is defined as postponing the doing a task because it yields

better outcomes due to better performance under pressure.

Health Allied [HA] Strand. It is a Senior High School strand which

equips learners with skills in the life sciences providing preparation for the
tertiary programs concerning medical and life sciences (UST Office of
Admissions [OFAD], 2016). Students enrolled in this strand serves as the
target population of the research.

Passive or Traditional Procrastination. It is the behavior of a

person that replaces adaptive behaviors with maladaptive behaviors (Chu
& Choi, 2005). However, in this study, passive procrastination is attained
when procrastination is not intended but occurs due to inability to make
quick and effective decisions or due to high pressure and would be
pessimistic in nature.

Perspective. This is a mental view or opinion of an individual;

prospect (“Perspective,” 2017, def. 3b). This is referred as the point of
view of the students on the causal factors of procrastination of this study.

Procrastination. It is intentionally and habitually putting off

something that should be done (“Procrastination,” 2017, def. 1). In this
study, it is referred as the habit of postponing activities that have an
impact on the individual’s life as a whole.

Procrastinator. It is a person who habitually puts off doing things

(“Procrastinator,” 2019, def. 1). It is referred in this study that the students
are experiencing procrastination often.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter discusses the prominence, the prevalence, the causes

and effects, and the different factors affecting procrastination. The
information retrieved from different journals were all chosen to support the
study as well as comparison of common events usually observed in
procrastination.

A. Prominence and Prevalence of Procrastination

One widespread phenomenon that influences performance in

different life fields which include academic performance is procrastination.
This is claimed to be a maladaptive and impaired response to emotionally
stressful states (Eckert, 2016). Procrastination is prevalent among 20% of
the adult world population and 50% of the student population. This is
linked to poor performance and mental health issues (Rozental &
Carlbring, 2014).
Mañana habit is a common and popular attitude in the Philippines
wherein “Mañana” is a Latin term for “tomorrow” or “at a future time”
(Aguirre, 2014). It is the habit of postponing doing duty and deciding to do
it later or in the last minute (Padua, 2017). This means that people that
exercise such habit tend to postpone given tasks or responsibilities and
mostly fail to complete them on time. It has been an attitude of the
Filipinos since the time of the Spaniards, and it is already a part of our
culture. Another is the practice of “Filipino time” which has been prevalent
in the Philippines, and has become so widespread that it is also known to
other countries as well. According to historians, this attitude can be traced
back to the Spaniards’ concept of siesta which can still be observed until
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 10

today (Tan, 2016). It has now become a part of the Filipino identity.
Filipino time is a norm in the Philippines wherein Filipinos’ way of thinking
promotes that it is more socially acceptable to be late rather than arriving
early (Martinez, 2015). A paper by Martinez (2015) found out that
perception of time is a cultural matter and how this affects ourselves is
dependent on the norms tied to one's culture; also, deviating from these
norms as an individual will only exclude and ostracize oneself from the
group. Filipino time is related to procrastination since it promotes the
acceptance of being late, therefore we are delaying the scheduled time
which is an act of procrastination.
Although it is a country-wide phenomenon, these practices still rely
on the individuals themselves. Thus, this study aims to look deeper into
the causes of procrastination not as a nationwide aptitude but as rooted in
every individual.

B. Procrastination and Its Types

There have been many different definitions given to procrastination.

Authors Andreou and White (2010) have gathered different definitions
from dictionaries wherein procrastination is referred to “defer action,
especially without good reason” (“Procrastination,” 1996) and the
continuous delay of a task due to boredom or to the unpleasantness of the
task (Cambridge English Dictionary, n.d) and psychologists such as
Klingsieck (2013) who defined procrastination as the intentional delay of
an act even with the knowledge of its negative consequences. These
definitions all meet at a common ground wherein a certain task is being
delayed either purposefully or not. Although they give the same meaning
of doing something at a later time, these different definitions may vary
according to the situation, purpose, and results. Therefore, procrastination
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 11

may be categorized into two main types: active procrastination and

passive or traditional procrastination.

Active procrastination is when a person purposefully and cognitively

decides to postpone given activities because he/she prefers to work under
pressure (Chu & Choi, 2005). This type of procrastination is more of a
productive type wherein it is suggested that the results of the
aforementioned regarding academic performance are similar to those of
the non-procrastinators (Chu & Choi, 2005) and that they have a better
academic self-perception compared to passive procrastinators as stated in
the study of Karmen et al., (2015). It disproves the notion that
procrastination is an unhealthy behavior that causes people to neglect
duties and responsibilities. A study of Li Cao (2012) concluded that active
procrastination was related mostly with the maladaptive, motivational and
behavioural characteristics; the author also elaborated that procrastinators
reported low mastery - approach goal, high performance - avoidance and
work-avoidance goal, and low intrinsic motivation and task value. Active
procrastinators select less effective strategies and conducive to learning.
In connection to this study, active procrastination is the counterpart of the
main focus of this paper which is traditional procrastination.

On the other hand, passive procrastination is when a procrastinator

turns to unproductive and maladaptive behavior rather than doing the task
at hand, thus causing him/her to fail at completing the given task on time
(Chu & Choi, 2005). This type of procrastination is considered detrimental
to the overall performance of an individual which affects the physical and
psychological wellbeing and is often associated with stress and coping
(Sirois & Kitner, 2015). This type of procrastination will be the focus in this
study since it is evident in the academic setting and the target
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 12

respondents of this study are students. In a study by Hussian and Sulran

(2010), such behavior has negative effects on the learning of the students
resulting to low achievements, or failure in exams, or fear of examinations
that then leads to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
This behavior negatively influence students in their academic and
personal lives.

C. Causes and Effects of Procrastination

Procrastination is caused by a lot of reasons wherein each reason

is explained by psychologists. Procrastination could be caused by the
perfectionism of an individual. This is due to the individual’s fixed mindset
which makes them believe that their abilities and intelligence were
acquired since birth and it could not be developed. A fixed mindset makes
one believe that certain tasks do not require effort and would only rely on
one’s talent. This reason hinders one’s ability to develop and make
positive changes (Dwick, 2016).

The fear of the unknown is another reason of procrastination in an

individual. It hinders the person of taking action due to the fear of
revealing the truth or something the person does not want to hear.
Misinformation about something needed to take action of hinders the
person to do anything about the task. Moreover, the common excuse “I’ll
do it later” is a reminder that one could work on their task at a later time.
This excuse creates a disconnection of the ideal feeling after an individual
accomplishes the task. This would conclude into the realistic feeling where
one would feel tired, worn out, and unmotivated. There are two concepts
that are linked to procrastination: one is the hot-cold empathy gap wherein
it is the mental state of an individual undermining his/her attitudinal
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 13

instinctive drive. In a situation, if a person is in the state of anger, the

person would struggle picturing himself calm. When a person is assigned
to do a task the person would think of scenarios wherein he would fail
rather than finishing the task which makes the person go into a state of
mind that would keep the person from doing the task. The dynamic
inconsistency concept is a situation wherein the person’s preferred
choices would be relevant depending on the time or situation. An example
is when there are no classes, a student wouldn’t wish for a suspension.
But if there were to have classes the next day and the student isn’t ready,
by then the student would want to have a suspension. (Scott, n.d., para 2-
5)

Motivation is composed of self - confidence and goal choice

(Michaelis, 2017). People procrastinate when it comes to weighing out
their tasks and doing smaller tasks than bigger tasks since that small
tasks are easier to accomplish — thus, resulting to earlier gratification.
Consequently, there is a sense of confidence and achievement in the
accomplishment of a small goal. However, by sticking to smaller goals and
setting aside bigger responsibilities, more time and effort is required to
finally accomplish the said responsibility. When tasks start to pile up, lack
of motivation occurs. This may be both a cause and effect of
procrastination since one loses motivation when little value is given to a
task (Carnegie Mellon University [CMU], 2016, para. 2)

Procrastinators know that the task require effort and hard work.
Working on something that demands a great amount of effort makes the
person lose motivation and choose to set aside the person’s given task.
Another factor is the time inconsistency which refers to the idea that a
leader that can make rules that people commit on and think that the
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 14

leader’s choice would remain the same. People tend to give importance
the present more than the future result which in turn would give them a
present bias when working on tasks (Barton, 2015).

A person takes upon the act of procrastinating because the

individual is unclear about how to get started. When a task is too complex
for the individual, the uncertainty of the taking action keeps the person
from making any progress.(Scott, n.d.)

D. Factors Correlated with Procrastination

a. Envirionment Particularly in the Academic Setting

Over the past years, studies that examined the correlation of

procrastination and the behavior of people in the academic setting
have emerged. In the study of Karmen, D., et al (2015), results show
that passive procrastination correlates with self-regulation and
academic motivation, attitude, and performance and that intentional
procrastination possesses a high probability of yielding positive
outcomes in academic self-perception.

b. Mental Health and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

According to the study of Rozental and Carlbring (2013),

procrastination is a behaviour pattern seen in almost half of the
population of students and 15 - 20 % of the adult population wherein
it has been associated with a variety of mental health problems such
as stress, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety disorders.
Research shows that such dilemma is as well linked to poor task-
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 15

performance, social anxiety, and self-handicapping behavior,

thereby having a negative impact on the psychological well-being of
the person (Rozental, 2014). It was also stated that Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy, a therapeutic approach to deal with a variety of
problems (Hofmann, Asnaani, Vonk, Sawyer, & Fang, 2012), was
considered as a treatment of choice. Being the first to conduct a
clinical trial, the results have shown that the intervention of CBT is
deemed to treat the different problems caused by procrastination.
Another result of the study has stated that having therapists have
shown a positive effect on procrastinators and could be treated as a
self regulatory failure. Finally, internet based treatment of CBT was
an effective way to deal with procrastination. The study of Rozental
and Carlbring (2013) could come in relation to the perspectives of
HA students as the students could use CBT as a means to cope
with procrastination.

c. Time Management

Time management is defined as a skill that every student

should not only have knowledge about, but also are equipped with
(Miqdadi, ALMomani, Masharqa, and Elmousel, 2014). In terms of
academics, time management ought to be the reason behind
procrastination among undergraduate students (Ocak & Boyraz,
2016).

According to Tracey (2016), time management is a necessity

for maximum quality of health and personal effectiveness. It is the
ability to manage time as an indicator of the success and failure of a
person. However, in a study conducted by Miqdadi, ALMomani,
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 16

Masharqa, and Elmousel, (2014) on undergraduates, it has showed

results that majority who showcased procrastination in the academic
setting, those who did the tasks near the deadline, are more
successful than those who exhibited effective time management. It
implies that despite the poor time management skills, being
equipped with good time management skills do not necessarily
dictate the outcome of a certain activity. It can be noted that time
management is a factor that contributes to the resort of passive
procrastination but will not be a sole determinant of the said type of
procrastination.

E. Effectivity of Procrastination Interventions

As cited in a journal by Rozental (2014), a large number of

people are affected by procrastination. Procrastination prevalence rates
range in between 15%-20% in the general adult population: this is proof
that procrastination is a phenomenon that is frequent among people.
A possible effective treatment for procrastination is a smartphone-
based treatment (Lukas, 2018). Procrastination is associated with a
variety of mental health problems such as stress, low self-esteem,
depression, and anxiety disorders. Also, procrastination is linked to poor
task-performance, social anxiety, and self-handicapping behavior, thereby
having a negative impact on the psychological well-being of the person.
A meta-analysis of 24 studies on procrastination interventions (total
k = 44, N = 1173) by Eerde (2018) suggests that cognitive behavioral
therapy strongly reduced procrastination more compared to other
interventions and has stable effects. In order to find out whether people
can reduce their level of procrastination; and if so, which type of
intervention is more effective and leads to a stronger reduction, four
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 17

various kinds of interventions were differentiated: self - regulation, therapy

on cognitive behavior, other therapeutic methods, and interventions
focused on strength and availability of resources around an individual.

Procrastination affects the daily lives of students in terms of grades,

behavior, and well-being. Many studies about procrastination have been
conducted however most of the studies conducted are focused on
academic procrastination (Eerde, 2018). “Procrastination is widely
acknowledged as a self regulation failure, if not as the ‘quintessential self
regulation failure’” (Rozental, 2014, p. 7). Future and further research
regarding this topic was proposed in order to help build stronger evidence
for the effectivity of interventions on reducing procrastination.
Information regarding these interventions would relate to the study
because since these interventions focus on measuring the effectivity of
curing procrastination, the focus would be more on preventing
procrastination. Cognitive behavioral therapy based interventions strongly
reduce procrastination (Eerde W.V., 2018). This study could further add
supporting information to their results and findings. The aforementioned
study also display statistics that support and imply the prevalence of
procrastination which serves as proof that procrastination is a
phenomenon that needs to be addressed because it is linked to negative
effects that affect the daily lives of people.

A study by Eerde (2018) states that procrastination affects the daily

lives of students in terms of grades, behavior, and well-being which
justifies the range of our respondents which are the SHS HA students.
Comparative studies have been conducted on the different interventions
on stopping procrastination however this study would focus more on HA
students with different personalities that are based on their behavior and
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 18

response to stress, and analyze their perspectives towards traditional

procrastination.

This chapter presents the research design, research locale,
participants of the study, sampling technique, instrumentation and data
gathering procedure that is to be utilized for the execution of the said
study.

Research Design

The research design utilized for the said study is qualitative in nature,
for it aims to know the perspective of the target respondents regarding
traditional procrastination. The study is a phenomenological study as it
aims to study a certain phenomenon, in this case is procrastination. It is
assumed as the most suitable approach for the said study as it is defined
as research that deals with characteristics observed from the respondents
with minimal to no use of statistical analysis for it is a non - experimental
research, thus gathering in - depth information.

Research Locale

The study was conducted at a catholic university in Manila. The said

institution is equipped with different departments that houses learning
individuals to mold them to become competent working professionals in
the near future. The university specifically has a Senior High School
Department which is composed of different academic strands that
correlates to one’s chosen field. The Health Allied (HA) strand is made for
students who are inclined with the medical field. The program offers
specialized subjects for Grade 12 learners such as Anatomy and
Physiology, Human Biology, Introduction to Health Care, General
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 20

Chemistry and Work Immersion. These specialized subjects advance the

learning individual’s prior knowledge about various branches of science to
establish a much greater foundation of learning. Grade 12 HA students,
which are said to be the target respondents of the study, were interviewed
in the vicinity of the said learning institution. The research was conducted
on the academic year 2018 - 2019, starting from September 2018 to April
2019.

Respondents of the Study

The target respondents of the said study are Grade 12 Health Allied
Students. Twenty (20) selected students under the said strand were given
consent forms in order to participate in the study and underwent a semi -
structured, open ended interview for the gathering of data for the said
study.

Sampling Technique

The sampling technique used in the said study is purposive sampling

and snowball technique. “Purposeful sampling is a technique widely used
in qualitative research for the identification and selection of information-
rich cases for the most effective use of limited resources (Patton, 2002)”
(Palinkas et al., 2015, p.3). This technique best fits the study since the
researchers specifically delve into the lived experiences of procrastinators.
It also ensures greater reliability of the study as it is part of the criteria that
the respondents have already experienced the said phenomenon.
Moreover, the said technique was aided by the snowball technique
wherein it initially consists of a small number of respondents who could
recommend potential cohorts who could again suggest possible
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 21

respondents (Sedgwick, 2013). Through this, the study would gain more
respondents who have had undergone similar circumstances through
time.

Instrumentation

The said study uses various research instruments. It will utilize a semi
- structured, open - ended interview that is comprised of questions which
was used to gather data needed for the said research. The researchers
make use of a printed copy of the interview questions to serve as a guide
while conducting the interview. A recording device, pen, and paper were
utilized to ensure that the information gathered were accurate.

Ethical Principles

Ethical issues arise in all types of research. That is why there were
some ethical principles that were taken into consideration for the said
research: (1) autonomy and (2) beneficence. Autonomy, also referred as
respect for persons, is a fundamental ethical principle that gives
recognition to the participants’ rights, including the right to be informed
about the study, the right to freely decide whether to participate in a study,
and the right to withdraw at any time without penalty (Singh & Hylton,
2015).

Given that the said study is qualitative in nature, it is honored by

giving a letter of invitation and consent which contains title, background,
procedure, and risks of the study. The consent form indicates how the
data will be recorded and utilized. By doing such, respondents are able to
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 22

exercise their rights because they have a choice if they are to accept or
refuse in participating in the study.

Beneficence, is another ethical principle closely related to researches.

It underscores the moral obligation to act for the benefit of others including
the protection of their rights and prevention to experience harm
(Cummings & Mercurio, 2010); but it is not merely to protect harm, but it
also entails actively striving to secure their wellbeing (International
Institute for Environment and Development, 2014).

The said research assures that the respondents will bring no harm to
the respondents in any way. It also provides a deeper knowledge
regarding traditional procrastination as a whole and as well give them long
– term benefits in dealing with the said phenomenon.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researchers created interview questions to be utilized for the semi

- structured open ended interviews. The researchers identified the chosen
participants for the said study by using purposive sampling and snowball
technique. An invitation letter and a consent form were created which
were directed to the target participants to request the participants to take
part in the study, and share their opinions and experiences which will be
utilized as the baseline data for the research. The researchers requested
for the participants to meet up for an interview while audio and video
recordings were implemented with the consent of the participant to ensure
accuracy and reliability of data. Should the respondent objects to the
audio and video recording, pen and paper techniques would be utilized.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 23

The researchers then analyze and interpret the gathered data. Research
paper with sufficient data needed for the study were finalized.

CHAPTER 4
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents the results and discussion of the acquired
data which were from the Grade 12 Health Allied respondents regarding
the research about traditional procrastination. The results were organized,
analyzed, and interpreted accordingly.

1. Perception of Grade 12 Health Allied Students on Traditional

Procrastination

1.1 Perception on Procrastination

Most of the respondents perceived procrastination as a “bad habit”

that is attempted to be changed. When asked about procrastination,
Respondent 5 stated, “I think procrastination is … a cycle and a habit na
parating ginagawa ng students kasi mas pinapangunahan ang leisure time
rather than yung mismong actual work”. According to the data gathered,
this is due to the negative effects that it brings such as emotional stress,
strain on health factors such as sleep patterns, and most specifically
stated was regarding the academic performance. This trend could be seen
in the statements of Respondent 19 and Respondent 5, wherein
Respondent 19 stated that “So syempre na stress ako tapos wala rin
akong tulog tapos nagpalpitate.” and Respondent 5 declared that “Kapag

The above findings acquired from the respondents are all

supported by recent studies which state that procrastination often serves
as buffer to failure and self-esteem threats, and this defensive posture is
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 25

evidenced by a marginally positive correlation with stereotype threat that

concerns for all students (Deemer, Smith, Carroll, & Carpenter, 2014);
and that procrastination may not only be directly related to decreased
school performance (e.g., via irrational delay of homework or test
preparations) but also indirectly via impaired sleep quality (Reinecke,
Meier, Beutel, Schemer, Stark, Wolfling & Muller, 2018).

On the other hand, some still reiterated that traditional

procrastination is beneficial since it helps in working better under pressure
and stress as stated by Respondent 12, “It makes me better in working
under pressure or stress.” and Respondent 20 who claimed that: “Mas
mabilis akong gumagawa mas effective sakin yung late ako nagstastart ng
school works kesa maaga.” Moreover, respondents put forth that the
pressure leads to generating better ideas that could improve the concept
of the work to be done. This concept can be seen in Respondent 6’s claim
wherein she said that starting early does not give her ideas: “Wala kasi
ako masyadong maisip kapag maaga akong gumagawa.”

The assertion of the benefits of procrastination with regards to

dealing with pressure is in alignment with past studies wherein it is
suggested that positive metacognitive beliefs concerned the usefulness of
procrastination in improving cognitive performance. These beliefs may be
involved in the initiation of the procrastinatory behavior in a person (Fernie
& Spada, 2008).
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 26

1.2 Perception of the Effectivity of Coping Mechanisms

Another trend that was observed is that the interviewed

procrastinators tried to avoid procrastination, but failed in doing so. This
could be observed in the insights of Respondent 3 as well as Respondent
16. Respondent 3 stated that “Hindi. Kasi parang pinipilit ko lang yung
sarili ko na, ‘Uy, gumawa ka.’ Pero di ko mapilit sarili ko, di talaga.” While
Only a few have answered that their interventions for avoiding
procrastination are effective in preventing the phenomenon and very little
have answered that they do nothing to avoid it. This trend could be
observed in the perceptions of Respondent 10 stating that “Sasabihin ko
As well as in the
interview of Respondent 17 stating that “Meron din akong mga sariling
strategic plans and formulas.” The researchers observed that the
interventions implemented by the respondents were different from one
another. There were some notable similarities such as the use of
persistence towards the self as shown in the statement of Respondent 1
which the respondent would tell one’s self to do one’s work multiple times.
Setting the time or schedule could also be observed in some of the
respondents. This trend could be observed from Respondent 20 which
stated that writing a calendar but sometimes would be ineffective.
“Nagsusulat kasi ako ng sa calendar ... effective naman pero minsan nag
pro-procrastinate ako. Hindi maiiwasan.” Respondents also tried putting
away distractions like how Respondent 19 does, as found in the interview;
“dapat may isa akong notebook na roon nakasulat lahat ng gawain, para
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 27

iccross ko kapag nagawa ko na ganyan. Kaso ang problem, … pati yung

pagsulat ko roon sa notebook pinoprocrastinate ko ... It could be effective
pero, sakin yung problema.” However, the interventions common to the
respondents are those that yield similar results in that they tried and failed
due to various reasons.

This trend suggests that the participants perceive procrastination as

something negative in which we have to try to avoid in order to improve
and move forward. Although the respondents found the interventions
being applied to be ineffective, findings of Eerde and Klingsieck (2018)
suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy strongly reduced procrastination
more compared to other interventions. The perception of effectiveness
might be due to the irregular application of the said coping mechanism as
it was commonly mentioned that after perceiving of the coping mechanism
to not work, the respondents turn to procrastination once again.

2. Self - perception of Grade 12 Health Allied Students with regards

to being procrastinators

The researchers found out that Grade 12 Health Allied Students still
tend to procrastinate despite knowing its effects on one's self. Most
respondents have stated negativity towards procrastination and its effects.
One notable trend is that most respondents that are affected by
procrastination complain about being stressed, sleep deprived, and
panicked after procrastinating as seen in the statements of Respondent
As previously
mentioned, most effects stated by the respondents lead to stress and an
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 28

funhealthy lifestyle. One thing in common in the responses of the

participants was that almost all effects are negative regardless of whether
it is towards the self or others. The researchers have noted that some
respondents had positive outcomes when procrastinating. This is
showcased in the statements of Respondents 6: “Mas nape-perform ko
siya nang maayos.”, 12: “It makes me better in working under pressure or
stress.”, and 20: “Mas mabilis akong gumagawa mas effective sakin yung
late ako nagstastart ng school works kesa maaga.” The participants
rationalized that cramming makes them better, effective and more efficient
in the workplace.

The possible reason for the negativity of these effects is that

procrastination leads to failure. As seen in Table 1, it is implied that
perfectionism can cause procrastination. It is possible that the students
see themselves as failures after procrastinating, thus explaining the
negative perspectives and experiences of the procrastinators. As
mentioned earlier, procrastination is usually a buffer to failure and self-
esteem threats which is evidenced by a positive correlation with
stereotype threat that concerns for all students (Deemer et al., 2014).
Another explanation as to why the majority of the respondents have
experienced negative effects after procrastinating is that procrastination is
also associated with various mental health problems. This includes stress,
low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety disorders. Rozental (2014)
stated that such dilemma is well linked to poor task-performance, social
anxiety, and self-handicapping behavior, thus having a negative impact on
the psychological well-being of the person. It can also be seen from the
results that there were students who responded positively to
procrastination, stating that this had made them do better in the academic
setting. Miqdadi, ALMomani, Masharqa, and Elmousel (2018) states that,
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 29

from their conducted research, undergraduates who exhibited academic

procrastination and did tasks near the deadline are more successful than
those who have effective time management skills. Thus, implying that
procrastinating or having good time management skills do not necessarily
dictate the outcome of a certain task.

3. Perceived causal factors of procrastination

The researchers have found out a lot of reasons why Grade 12

Health Allied students procrastinate. Some of the most common reasons
are due to confidence and prioritization of enjoyment, social relationships,
lack of motivation, laziness, pessimism, technological advances, and
lastly, the intention itself to procrastinate.

3.1 Confidence and prioritization of enjoyment

In contrast to the results of other studies wherein it was found that

the reasons behind lack of motivation is weakness of willpower, lack of
ambition and purpose, a feeling of pessimism for the future, reluctance of
faculty members, and lack of dmotivating activities (Sozer, 2018). The
researchers found that confidence in getting the task done on time is one
of the major causes of procrastination within the respondents. This trend
could be observed in the statements by Respondent 10 wherein she
stated that she gets lazier and she has the confidence of finishing the task
through cramming and Respondent 12, in her statements: “The reason
why I procrastinate naman is because I manage my time.” “...kasi
time, I can still perform good”. In connection to the self-confidence that the
respondents possess, a trend that was also observed in the responses of
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 30

the interviewees which contradict the results of past researches is the

optimism of the respondents that the task will be accomplished even with
a short period of time.

3.2 Social Relationships

The respondents also tend to be lazy due to the influence of others.

From the acquired data, it was stated that when the respondents find one
of the respondents’ classmates or group mates not doing the group’s
work, the respondents tend to not do the tasks also thus having a butterfly
effect of procrastinating. This is reflected from the statements of
hindi kaya ganun parang damay - damay nalang.”, and Respondent 15,
“Oo kasi kunwari yun nga pag nagtanong, ‘Uy nagawa mo na ba yung
ganito?’ tas pag sabihin nila ‘hindi pa’, ah yes, sige ako rin, parang
nakakarelieve na parang may kasama ka sa pagpoprocrastinate.”

This contagious effect of laziness and procrastination could be

compared to other studies which the researchers have discovered that
individuals are capable of being influenced by others' behavioral
tendencies for laziness, impatience, and shrewdness which deemed
accurate for about 85% of choice prediction (Devaine & Daunizeau 2017).

3.3 Lack of motivation, laziness, pessimism

Some of the respondents reported that overthinking was another

factor that keeps them from procrastinating. An example of this is the
statement of Respondent 2: “kapag iniisip ko yung kailangan ko gawin,
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 31

parang, the longer I think about it, parang mas naiisip ko na “Ohmygod
ang hirap nito. Ang pangit ng magagawa ko.” Kaya parang ayoko
mangyari yun kaya di ko nalang ginagawa.”

This finding of overthinking being a factor of procrastination is

supported by the aforementioned study together with the study of Balkis
and Duru (2018) which suggested that both self-downing and rational
beliefs have a direct effect on self-doubt and that self-doubt mediates the
relationship between self-downing and procrastination.

3.4 Technological Advances

Respondents also have been observed of being easily distracted

due to social media and technologies at hand. This is reflected from the
The
respondents tend to use phones and gadgets, and would check social
media accounts in applications like twitter, facebook, and instagram;
instead of doing a given task with enough time but only to be wasted due
to the distraction of using gadgets.

In connection to the above findings, it was found out from a study

that 67% of students were distracted by use of cell phones (Attia, Baig,
Marzouk, & Khan, 2017) and another supporting journal for this cause
states that procrastination is significantly related to Internet multitasking
and insufficiently controlled Internet use in this life phase (Reinecke et al.,
2018)
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 32

3.5 Self-causation
One of the surprising findings that the researchers found out was
that the respondents favor more in procrastinating than doing the
respondents’ task immediately due to the fact that the result of the
respondents procrastinating tend to still have exceptional results in doing
so which can be observed in the statement of Respondent 6, stating that
“Mas nape-perform ko siya nang maayos.” as well as in the statement of
Respondent 16 which stated that “It makes me better in working under
pressure or stress.” In addition to these, R7 stated that “Wala (on his
intentions of avoiding procrastination), I always leave plan and
procrastinate again” but still finishes the task on time as observed in his
narration of his cramming story.

Apparently, some of the respondents tend to procrastinate because

the respondents let the phenomenon occur in spite of knowing the
disadvantages and consequences of doing so. Procrastination is deemed
to be worth the risk since due to past experiences of the respondent, the
success rate can be predicted and the time to be spent in doing the
activity can already be calculated. As mentioned earlier, from the study of
Miqdadi et al. (2018) suggests that procrastination do not necessarily
result to a negative outcome.

This result overlaps the meanings of active and passive

procrastination wherein in a passive sense, the respondents pose
maladaptive responses to corresponding tasks. However, looking at it in
an active type, they postpone doing the responsibility due to the
abovementioned causes especially the confidence in getting the task done
on time and that awareness of being trained in stress-handling situations
are present. Furthermore, even if the respondents get the task done on
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 33

time, it is still not their intention to procrastinate at an excessive degree

although it is still what is happening; thus causing them to try different
coping mechanisms.

Emergence of Themes

1. Root

The respondents have stated that they are aware of the causes of their
procrastination. In the gathered data, it has been observed that these
causes consist of the following: confidence and prioritization of enjoyment,
social influence, lack of motivation, laziness, pessimism, and technological
advances. Examples of statements which amplify these observed themes
include that of Respondent 10 who stated that, “Mas ano, mas nagiging
mamaya. Parang yung Mañana habit and yung ano ang over confidence.”,
and Respondent 19 in which she stated: “Uhm, everytime, uhm, mas
pinipili ko mag twitter and social media before gumawa ng gawain.”

2. Result

The procrastinatory behavior of the respondents lead to various effects

that affect each individual differently. Multiple accounts have stated that
the result of their procrastination leads to emotional stress, strain on
health and sleep patterns, academic performance, and working under
pressure. This is evident in the statements of the respondents like
Respondent 19 who stated that she experienced stress to the point that it
led her to sleep deprivation and occurrence of palpitations: “So syempre
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 34

3. Response

The researchers have found out that in multiple, if not all cases, the
respondents posses coping mechanisms that aim to avoid and lessen
behaviors and actions of procrastination. Similarities in methods of
avoiding procrastination are evident in the responses of the respondents.
These measures involve persistence, setting deadlines, schedules, and
checklists. This theme is seen in the responses of Respondent 1 “Pinilit ko

Relationship to philosophical underpinnings

The variance in the data gathered such as in coping mechanisms,

causes, and effects are supported by the philosophical approach of the
study that is constructivism. Constructivism, a form of realism is described
as a reality known personally and subjectively (Tobin & Tippins,1993).This
is in direct alignment with the study since the data gathered was from the
personally lived experiences of the respondents. It also supports the
truthfulness of the data gathered along with the researchers’ insights. On
the other hand, interpretivism, which is the second philosophical approach
used, is an approach which gives emphasis on the nature and
participation of people in the socio-cultural domains of life (Elster,2007;
Walsham,1995). This supports the methods of the researchers in
gathering data which was an open-ended, semi-structured interview as
well as the differences in the data gathered from the responses of the
participants which were contrasting, and various perspectives derived
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 35

from the personal characteristics and beliefs brought about by social and
cultural factors in life.

Simulacrum of the Study

Figure 1. Presentation of procrastination and emergent themes: root,

result, response depicted through wood, fire, and fire extinguisher
respectively.

The three emergent themes in the study are roots, results, and
response. Figure 1 presents procrastination as compared to the
mechanisms of a fire. In the figure above, it can be seen that the roots of
the said phenomenon is represented by the wood that serves as the fuel
of the fire which, in turn, represents the phenomenon of procrastination.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 36

The smoke is equivalent to the results because it is one of the harmful

effects of fire. Such effects are not only harmful to the source of
procrastination but also to others in its surroundings. Another component
present in the figure is the fire extinguisher which represents the coping
mechanisms of those who experience procrastination. This is
characterized by the attempt to put out the fire — in this case,
procrastinating — however, in some circumstances the fire extinguisher
gets emptied wherein it represents the failure of the coping mechanism
attempts to work.

CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, discusses the

conclusions with regards to the perspectives towards traditional
procrastination and the recommendations for future researchers of the
study.

Summary

The study is conducted in order to determine the perspectives of

health allied students on traditional procrastination with the goal to deepen
the understanding of the lived experiences of the respondents, and to
discover emerging themes and patterns from the data gathered. Given the
aim of the study, the respondents were Grade 12 Health Allied students
who experience the said phenomenon.

Due to the purpose of the study which is to further understand the

phenomenology of procrastination, the research method is qualitative in
nature while following a phenomenological research design. It was
conducted within the vicinity of a Catholic University in Manila. Each
participant was given a consent and invitation letter in taking part in the
study. The researchers measured the perspectives of the said
respondents by conducting a semi - structured open - ended interview.
Opinions, insights, and responses of the participants were recorded,
transcribed, and tabulated as the baseline data for the study.

The study yielded three core themes from the data gathered
through thematic analyses. In these emerging themes, the data gathered
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 38

were categorized. The researchers found out that (1) root - the grade 12
health allied students are aware of the causal factors of their
procrastinatory behavior; it was discovered that actions of procrastination
were caused by confidence, prioritization of enjoyment, social
relationships, lack of motivation, laziness, pessimism and technological
advances that the respondents possess; some respondents procrastinate
intentionally despite knowing the negative effects that come with it based
on their own experiences. (2) result - the respondents also know of the
various effects it brings upon themselves; the responses of the
respondents as to the effects of procrastination often lead to negativity
due to stress, lack of sleep, and panic, however, a small number stated
that procrastination affects themselves in a positive manner as it makes
themselves work more efficiently; and (3) response - regardless of
whether they succeeded or failed in their attempts, coping mechanisms
are evident in the responses of the participants as most of them have
ways or have tried ways to avoid and prevent the phenomenon of
procrastination; most of these methods involve setting deadlines,
schedules, and checklists.

Summary of Findings

Perception of Grade 12 Health Allied Students on Traditional

Procrastination

a. Perception of Procrastination

Majority of the respondents perceived procrastination as a negative

behavior pattern that needs to be eliminated or prevented as much as
possible. Respondents that share this point of view have different attempts
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 39

to impede the said phenomena due to the underlying impacts that it has
such as emotional distress, strain on health factors such as sleep
patterns, and poor academic performance. These attempts vary
individually from one person to another.

In contrast, even if majority of the respondents perceived traditional

procrastination as a bad habit, there were still some who asserted that
dealing with the said phenomena is of great help to them for it makes
them work better under pressure or stress. The pressure leads to
generating better ideas for it gives them more drive leading to better
quality work. Because the effects and how the respondents respond to
procrastination and its effects were discussed, the themes that emerged
are results and response.

b. Perception of the Effectivity of Coping Mechanisms

Based from the data gathered, it was observed that there were
coping mechanisms done by respondents to adapt to traditional
procrastination. Majority of the respondents of the said study tried to
prevent the said phenomena but still failed in the end, after trying various
ways to cope. A few addressed that their interventions for maintaining a
strategic distance from the phenomena are effective; and very little have
answered that they do nothing to avoid it. Regardless of whether they
succeeded or failed, it is evident that there is an attempt to stir away in
encountering traditional procrastination. Again, the response theme
emerged as the respondents tried to deviate from procrastinating.

Self - perception of Grade 12 HA students with regards to being

procrastinators
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 40

Perception of one’s self is evident in the respondents as various

effects and insights were seen in the trend of their responses. Negativity
towards procrastination still arose as the most trending as effects such as
stress, sleep deprivation, and panic are most commonly noted. Such
effects are complained to have impacts on the physical, emotional,
mental, and social relationships of the respondents whilst having
unsatisfactory results with academic performance. However, there were
minimal responses that pose the positive effects of procrastination as they
were rationalized to help in dealing with pressure. As the respondents
discussed their different experiences of how procrastination affects their
lives, the theme that arose is the results.

Perceived causal factors of procrastination

The following factors emerged as the most common to cause

procrastination among the respondents: (a) confidence in getting the task
done while still having time to enjoy which is due to the past experiences
of the respondents of accomplishing the task within a short period of time,
(b) social relationships which show that the act of procrastination can be
contagious, (c) lack of motivation, laziness, and pessimism which result
from overthinking and self-doubt leading to paralysis in getting the task
done, (d) technological advances which has social media as the most
common form of distraction, and lastly (e) the intention itself to
procrastinate due to the notion that procrastination do not necessarily lead
to negative outcomes and that the perks of procrastinating are worth the
cons. Thus, the roots emerged as one of the themes.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 41

Conclusions

Although there is a vast pool of studies regarding procrastination,

its prevalence among students is still inevitably high. Thus, this study
explored the perspectives of health allied students regarding such
phenomena in order to understand it better and to contribute to the
existing knowledge present in the world of academic literature. The
following conclusions were made through the study:

1. Most of the respondents perceive procrastination as a

negative factor, however, there are few to none who
perceive it positively. It has been observed that, regardless
of whether the grade 12 health allied students think that
procrastination is helpful to them, almost all respondents
possess ways of preventing or lessening procrastination and
its effects. Therefore, it can be concluded that most grade 12
HA students perceive procrastination as a negative factor
that needs to be suppressed and behavior that needs to be
changed. This is inferred because of the coping and
preventive mechanisms the respondents have in response to
their own procrastinatory behavior.

2. Oftentimes, it has been added that the phenomenon leads to

stress and panic for the students. However, there are a few
to none who perceive procrastination positively and think
that the phenomenon results in their benefit. The
respondents have stated that they are aware of its toll on
themselves emotionally and mentally, but despite them
being aware of this, they still continue actions of
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 42

procrastination due to various reasons. In conclusion,

procrastination is seen as a negative behavior by most of the
respondents.

3. Although the respondents have a unanimous perception of

themselves as procrastinators, each one has a different
take, adaptive response, and point of view of the different
conventions of the said phenomenon. Many try to change
such behavior due to the negative effects that it brings
despite some positive responses such that procrastination
has been helpful in dealing with pressure and at times, the
decision to procrastinate is worth it.

4. The Grade 12 Health Allied respondents are aware of the

reasons on why they procrastinate. The reasons stated are
as follows: confidence and prioritization of enjoyment, social
relationships, lack of motivation, laziness, pessimism, and
technological advances. Although there are those who claim
that their coping mechanism against procrastination is
effective, plenty of the participants have methods on
avoiding their behavior of procrastination that has trouble in
attaining success. Procrastination has proved to be difficult
to suppress, therefore, those who experience procrastination
should find a suitable coping and preventive mechanism that
is compatible and effective for them.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 43

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions presented, the following

recommendations are suggested to future researchers:

1. The researchers recommended that data be obtained on a greater

scale to gain new and more diverse insights on traditional
procrastination.

2. The researchers also recommend to retrieve the perspectives of

other senior high school strands and try to find new patterns and try
to correlate the newly acquired patterns with previously obtained
patterns including the ones retrieved from this study.

3. The research could also become qualitative - quantitative in nature

in able to obtain larger statistical data while trying to find a deeper
meaning to the reason of procrastination of each individual, to find
the trend among a larger population, and to measure the severity
and frequency of the phenomenon

4. Further research could utilize the acquired patterns to find general

coping mechanisms for each common pattern of procrastination.
This would be the solution for students and professionals not only
in the university but those who procrastinate in other parts of the
world.

EMERGING THEMES

Table 1.
Emerging Themes

THEMES TRENDS SIGNIFICANT STATEMENTS

R1: “Ah, bukas nalang. Marami pa

tayong time, bukas nalang.”
R2: “kapag iniisip ko yung kailangan
1 ROOT CAUSES ko gawin, parang, the longer I think
about it, parang mas naiisip ko na
“Ohmygod ang hirap nito. Ang pangit
ng magagawa ko.” Kaya parang ayoko
mangyari yun kaya di ko nalang
ginagawa.”
R3: “Feeling ko sa workload ng
students, lalo na, tayong mga
graduating kasi patong patong yung
mga peta, sunod sunod yung quizzes.”
R4: “May problema po ako sa Time
Management.”
R4: “Parang mas nawiwili po tayo sa
paggamit ng phone kaysa sa paggawa
ng schoolworks talaga.”
R4: “Pero para kasing dito po, new
environment, parang namulat po ako
na, pwede na magdala ng cellphone.
So parang nadistract po talaga ako sa
idea nun.”
R5: “I think procrastination is … a
cycle and a habit na parating
ginagawa ng students kasi mas
pinapangunahan ang leisure time
rather than yung mismong actual work
... I think kasi we have this mañana
habit ng mga Filipinos and because of
that habit we tend to produce a work
na … may potential pero kasi
kinulangan ka ng oras kasi
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 68

masyadong madami yung ginagawa

masyadong stress ganun.”
R6: “Wala kasi ako masyadong maisip
kapag maaga akong gumagawa.”
R10: “Some filipino are lazy, kaya
minsan nasasama rin yang mañana
habit na yan.”
R10: “Mas ano, mas nagiging tamad
ako.
Parang yung Mañana habit and yung
ano ang over confidence ”
R10: “Matutulog nalang instead doing
assignment ganun ako madalas kase
palagi akong tulog tas minsan naman
pag may mga petas, homeworks na
kailangan kong gagawin ginagawa ko
nalang kumakain tas syempre busog
makakatulog din ako.”
R11: “Naooverwhelm sa dami ng
gagawin.”
R11: “Kinakaya ko naman gawin so,
cinocontinue ko padin.”
R12: “The reason why I procrastinate
naman is because I manage my time.”
R12: “... kasi masyado akong
confident sa abilities ko na kahit wala
akong masyadong time, I can still
perform good”
R13: “Mas pinipili manuod ng vlogs
kesa gawin yun.”
R14: “Pag nakikita ko sila na hindi pa
rin gumagawa parang nakaka -
influence din na hindi na rin muna
gawin tutal sila rin naman hindi kaya
ganun parang damay - damay
nalang.”
ano.”
R15: “Oo kasi kunwari yun nga pag
nagtanong, “Uy nagawa mo na ba
yung ganito?” tas pag sabihin nila
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 69

“hindi pa”, ah yes, sige ako rin, parang

nakakarelieve na parang may kasama
ka sa pagpoprocrastinate.”
R15: “Kasi minsan tinatamad
ako kasi alam mo yun kasi sobrang
nacoconsume na yung oras ko sa
isang araw sa school pa lang pero
deserve ko naman siguro magpahinga
tas bibigyan ko naman siya ng time
para gawin pero ngayon siguro rest
muna.”
R17: “Syempre magpahinga ka naman
kailangan mo ng balance sa buhay,
etc. wag puro aral.”
R18: “ Nagp-procrastinate ako kasi
naiimpluwensyahan ako ng iba.”
R19: “Uhm, everytime, uhm, mas
pinipili ko mag twitter and social media
before gumawa ng gawain.”
R20: “... lahat kami nag
proprocrastinate din and
nagproprocrastinate naman ako.”

R1: “Kahit andami nating gagawin,

naiiyak na ako pero di ko parin
ginagawa. Nagpapanic ako like “Bat di
ko ‘to ginagawa?”
2 RESULT EFFECTS R1: “Nad-disappoint ako sa sarili ko.”
R2: “Ako din yung nagre- reklamo na
walang tulog at yong mema nalang
yung gawa ko sa huli kasi … rushed
ko siyang ginagawa.”
R2: “Sinusungitan ko na minsan yung
ibang tao, ganun … hindi ko
nareregulate yung behavior ko … I’m
mean sometimes.”
R3: “Yung effect niya saakin kasi
nakakaapekto rin siya sa pagtulog ko
kasi ... di ako nakakatulog nang
maayos kasi kailangan ko irush iyong
mga projects ko, usually the night
before submission.”
R5: “Kapag nag procrastinate ako …
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 70

yung quality ng work ko ay bumababa

pati na rin ang sleeping pattern …
parating na dedeteriorate.”
R6: “Mas nape-perform ko siya nang
maayos.”
R6: “It’s very stressful for me … the
deadline is ano bukas na agad tapos
ako gumagawa pa lang ako the night
before the deadline.”
R7: “Walang kwenta yung naipapasa
ko.”
R10: “Mas ano, mas nagiging tamad
ako.”
R11: “I guess pag nag pile up na lahat
- lahat, here comes the mental
breakdown.”
R11: “Kasi kunwari, groupwork & then
hinihintay nila yung ginagawa ko.
Nadedelay din sila kasi pag sinasabi
naman nila na kailangan din nila.”
R12: “Medyo muntik nako kapusin sa
oras and sometimes kasi when you
procrastinate, may ibang tao na
nadadamay which means they’ll have
to wait for you since you didn’t do it
kaagad.”
R12: “It makes me better in working
under pressure or stress.”
R13: “Parang kulang sa tulog tapos di
alam yung gagawin nagpapanic.”
R17: “Nagkakaron ka na ng anxiety na
parang pagsisihan mo talaga na
nagpro- procrastinate.”
R19: “So syempre na stress ako tas
wala rin akong tulog tas nagpalpitate.”
R20: “Mas mabilis akong gumagawa
mas effective sakin yung late ako
nagstastart ng school works kesa
maaga.”
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 71

R1: “Pinilit ko sarili ko. Saka

nagpapaalarm ako, pasunod sunod na
alarm. “Gawin mo na, gawin mo na,
3 RESPONSE COPING gawin mo na.” Hindi ako nagpplaner,
MECHANISMS though.”
R1: “Hindi. Pinapatay ko yung alarm.”
R2: “dapat may isa akong notebook na
don nakasulat lahat ng gawain, para
iccross ko kapag nagawa ko na
ganyan. Kaso ang problem, … pati
yung pagsulat ko don sa notebook
pinoprocrastinate ko ... It could be
social media.”
R5: “Mas pinipilit ko sa mind ko na
mas maganda sa feeling na kapag
natapos mo na agad and you don’t
have to worry about it.”
R6: “Nagttry ako na maging maaga na
sa paggagawa pero minsan kasi hindi
natutuloy pero tinatry ko padin
naman.”
R7: “Wala, I always leave plan and
procrastinate again.”
R8: “ngayon tinatry ko na yung
gumawa talaga ng may schedule ...
effective naman siya.”
R10: “Sasabihin ko pag nagawa ko
nang mas maaga yung isang task na
yun irereward ko yung sarili ko like,
bibili ng pagkain ... effective naman.”
R11: “Nagsusulat ako ng kailangan
kong gawin and anong time ko siya
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 72

kailangan gawin at kailangan kong

goal for the day ... nagagawan ko
naman ... Discipline will succeed.”
R12: “Sabi ko magsisipag ako ganon
pero hindi ko na natuloy. I tried but I
failed ... I tried doing my schoolworks
early and on time ... tinamad rin ako so
I just ended up procrastinating more.”
R13: “Di magpaload para walang data
... nagpapaload din naman ako.”
R14: “Nagdidivide na ako ng time
kung ano yung gagawin ko kung ano
yung pagkakasunod sunod pero hindi
nasusunod.”
R15: “Tinatry kong irelax yung sarili ...
mayroon akong parang checklist ng
mga PETA tas sinusulat ko yung
deadlines nila tas inuuna ko yung
pinakamalapit yung deadline tsaka
yung pinakamadadali tas parang ano
parang nagkakaroon ako ng time
table.”
ako nasusubmit na push up video
namin sa PE.”
R17: “Meron din akong mga sariling
goals kaya nakakaya kong iovercome
siya at nakakaya kong bumuo ng
strategic plans and formulas.”
R18: “Pinut away ko muna yung sarili
ko sa social media ... hindi siya naging
effective syempre kasi ano parang
nawalan ka ng part sayo kasi syempre
araw araw mong ginagawa.”
R18: “Hindi kinaya kasi syempre pag
gusto mo maging productive kailangan
mo parin ng connection sa ibang tao.”
R19: “Pinapatay ko yung wifi inu-
uninstall ko yung twitter pero ii-install
ko rin maya-maya.”
R20: “Nagsusulat kasi ako ng sa
calendar ... effective naman pero
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 73

minsan nag pro-procrastinate ako.

Hindi maiiwasan.”

APPENDIX G
INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: KAYCE LOZANO

Interviewer:[Ramon] Do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee:Yes.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Can you give examples?

Interviewee:Pano ba?

ginagawa yung AVP. Kahit andami nating gagawin, naiiyak na
ako pero di ko parin ginagawa. Nagpapanic ako like “Bat di ko
‘to ginagawa?” pero di ko parin ginagawa.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, kapag nagpprocrastinate ka, anong nafefeel mo –

parang, idescribe mo yung experience.

Interviewee: Uhm, ano bang feeling kapag nagpprocrastinate. Wala, wala

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, nasstress ka ba ganon kapag nagpprocrastinate?

Tas wala ako nagagawa tapos nage-end up
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 74

Interviewer:[Ramon] Sa tingin mo, bakit tayo nagpprocrastinate?

Interviewee:Bat ba tayo nagpprocrastinate? Kasi, ano tayo. Kasi feeling

natin marami pa tyaong time. “Ah, bukas nalang. Marami pa
tayong time, bukas nalang.” Hanggang sa dumating yung time
yung day before the deadline. Saka mo palang gagawin.

Interviewee: Oo.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Pano mo ‘to ginawa?

Interviewee: Pinilit ko sarili ko. Saka nagpapaalarm ako, pasunod sunod na

alarm. “Gawin mo na, gawin mo na, gawin mo na.” Hindi ako
nagpplaner, though.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Effective ba?

Interviewee:Hindi. Pinapatay ko yung alarm.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So pano nakakaapekto yung procrastination sa’yo?

Interviewee:Lagi akong rushed, laging clutch. Clutch hoe, I’m a clutch

hoe.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So sa tingin mo, effective ba ‘to?

Interviewee: Ang alin?

Interviewer: [Ramon] Ay sa tingin mo ba, worth it ang procrastination?

Interviewee: Hindi, syempre hindi.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So pag nagpprocrastinate, sa tingin mo nakakaapekto

ba ‘to sa ibang tao?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 75

Interviewee: Like paano, anong instance ba?

Interviewer: [Ramon] Like kunwari, group works.

Interviewee: Oo.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So, yun lang. Thank you.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: NATALIE MALUBAG

Interviewer:[Ramon] Do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee:Yes, that’s why you interviewed me in the first place.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Yes, syempre. Can you describe, kunyari magbigay

ka ng examples ng nagpprocrastinate ka.

Interviewee:Uhm, for example. Instead of gawin ko yong Tribute to My

Family sa Emtech, nagtwitter lang ako. Yun, that’s usually what
I do. Just go on Twitter then refresh lang ako nang refresh tapos

kasi at the back of your head, alam mong hindi dapat yun yung
ginagawa mo. So parang nagaalala ka na, you’re willingly letting
yourself, ano, yung twitter, whatever pangdistract na kumakain
sa oras mo, instead of what you’re actually doing.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Sa tingin mo ba worth it ba? Yung enjoyment?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 76

hindi ko siya … kasi, kasi ayon. Kasi rushed ko siyang ginawa.

Di siya worth it.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Di worth it kasi hindi magandang output yung nagawa

mo?

Interviewee:Ah iyon. Maliban don, yung effect niya saakin kasi

projects ko, usually the night before submission.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, kung ganito, bakit tayo nagpprocrastinate? Bat ka

nagpprocrastinate?

sobrang dami. Ohmygod, sobrang hirap.” And then kapag
So I think ang
reason kung bat ako nagpprocrastinate is parang, kapag iniisip
ko yung kailangan ko gawin, parang, the longer I think about it,

Inavoid – or parang hindi nagprocrastinate?

Interviewee: Grabe ka sakin. Ahm, oo. Everyone’s tried.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Anong ginawa mo?

nabbreak into small tasks, gets mo? Since – kasi parang nga
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 77

gawin yung peta or project. So ang triny kong gawin is, dapat
problem, the reason why, I failed or I’m failing right now kasi pati
sinusulatan yung notebook, so there’s nothing to cross off,
ayun.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So sa tingin mo effective ba yun?

Interviewee:It could be effective pero, sakin yung problema.

Interviewer: [Ramon] Kapag ba nagpprocrastinate ka, nakakaapekto ba ‘to

sa ibang tao?

Interviewee: I guess.

Interviewer: [Ramon] Paano?

Minsan nakakapaglinis.
basically, what I’m trying to say is, sinusungitan ko na minsan
yung ibang tao, ganun. Parang yung the way I treat people,
So, I treat – I’m mean sometimes, okay? Okay, hi Juliene.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Thank you.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: SOPHIA TORDA

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 78

Interviewer:[Juliene] Hello. What’s your name?

Interviewee:My name is Sophia.

Interviewer:[Juliene] And, from what section are you?

Interviewee:I’m from 12HA7.

Interviewer:[Juliene] So, ang tanong. Procrastinator ka ba?

Interviewee: Yes.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Anong masasabi mo sa procrastination? How do you

perceive procrastination?

Interviewee:Para sakin may positive and negative effects siya. Positive

kasi, napipiga yung utak mo and feeling ko don ako mas
nagiging productive. Tapos, negative kasi, marami kang
So, mahirap.

Interviewer:[Juliene] So feeling mo, parang yung oras na ginugugol mo sa

nagpprocrastinate ka parang di ba yun to your advantage din
tas ayaw mo pang ipagpatuloy yun, ganon?

Interviewer:[Juliene] So, why do you think procrastination develops in our

society?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 79

Kelan

ka ba naging procrastinator or kelan ka nagstart
magprocrastinate?

Interviewee:Simula nong, Grade 10.

Interviewee: Uh-hhm.

Interviewer: [Juliene] So, can you give examples on the time na

naexperience mo magprocrastinate?

Bio. So ayun, sabay sabay na namin ginawa.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Nagcram na kayo?

Interviewee: Oo.

Interviewer:[Juliene] So, how does it affect you? Yung pagcram mo don?

Interviewee: Nakaka-aligaga. Parang sobrang uneasy sa feeling kasi

nakakastress siya.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Nakakstress. Pero productive ka parin?

Interviewee:Uh-hm. Kasi kailangan matapos.

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 80

Interviewer:[Juliene] Tama nga naman. So why do you procrastinate?

Interviewee:Kasi, gusto ko nga unahin muna yung pahinga, yung tulog

kaysa sa paggawa muna ng schoolworks.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Feeling mo ba, worth it yung pagpahinga muna?

Interviewer:[Juliene] So gusto mo ba yun baguhin?

Interviewee: Yes.

gagawin.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Yung excuse nalang. /laugh/

Interviewee: Oo.

Interviewer:[Ramon] How does these interventions affect you in relation to

procrastination? Effective ba siya?

Interviewee: Alin yung pag p-procrastinate? Ay, yung ginawa ko? Uhm,

Interviewer:[Juliene] So yung cram time talaga bumubuhos, ganun.

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 81

Interviewee: Oo.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Do you think, yung pagprocrastinate mo nakakaaffect

Interviewer:[Juliene] Okay. Thank you.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: SAMANTHA SIOCO

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Hi. Anong name mo po, ate?

Interviewee:Samantha po.

Interviewer #2:[Ramon] So ate, sa aming research, may dalawang types ng

procrastination.
is Traditional Procrastination. Yung isa, Academic
Procrasination. Yung Traditional Procrastination is yung
papalitan mo yung dapat mong gawin ng maladaptive behavior.
Kunyari may assignment, di ka muna magaassignment kasi for
your leisure time lang, for your luxury. Ang Academic
Procrastination, kunyari uhm, may gagawin kang assignment,
pero di mo muna gagawin kasi gusto mo gawin yung something
productive rin, pero mas madali. Kunyari, madami kang
assignment, uunahin mo yung pinakamadali tapos ip-prolong
mo yung pinakamahirap ganun.

assignment.

Interviewer #3:[Aimee] So, yung focus nung research namin is yung

Interviewee #1:[Ramon] So, Juliene.

Interviewer #2:[Juliene] So ate, procrastinator ka ba?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 82

Interviewee:Opo.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Gaano kalala?

Interviewee:Sobrang lala. /laughs/

Interviewer:[Juliene] Uhm, sige. Ano masasabi mo sa pagprocrastinate

mo?

Interviewee: Ano po, nakikita ko siya as good and bad side. Good kasi
kahit nagpprocrastinate ako, naachieve ko siya. Bad side kasi,

Interviewer #3:[Aimee] Parang you know you could have done better kung
hindi ka nagprocrastinate?

Interviewee: Opo.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Uhm, why do you think procrastination develops in

our society?

Interviewer #1: [Juliene] Maraming distractions?

Interviewee:Opo, marami pong distractions.

pa?

Interviewee: Uh-hhm, wala na po.

Interviewer #1: [Juliene] So yung distractions lang talaga. So can you give
examples nung pagprocrastinate mo?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 83

importante.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Feeling mo ba worth it naman yun? Yung

pagprocrastinate?

Interviewee: Hindi po.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] So, sa tingin mo, dapat mas binawasan mo yung

panonood mo ng kdrama?

Interviewee: Opo.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Bakit di mo ginawa? /laughs/

Interviewee:Yun nga po. Yun nga po yung problema ko.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] So parang di mo kaya-?

Interviewee:May problema po ako sa Time Management.

Interviewer #1: [Juliene] Ah, okay. So may plano ka bang solusyonan yung
problema mo sa Time Management?

Interviewer: Opo.

As much as possible po, ilalayo ko yung

yung mga ginagamit natin for academics. Pero po parang mas
binabawasan ko po mag social media.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Nakakaya mo naman?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 84

Interviewee: Nakakaya naman po.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Effective naman?

Interviewee: Effective naman po siya

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] So kapag nababawasan mo yung pag social media

mo, hindi ka nagp-procrastinate?

Interviewee: Hindi po.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Yes naman. So hanggang ngayon ba

procrastinator ka?

Interviewee: Opo.

work.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] So sa group works talaga pinakaapektado?

Interviewee: Opo.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Sa acads mo? Okay naman?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 85

Interviewee: Hindi din po.

Interviewer #1: /laughs/ Parang problemang problema natin ‘to ah. So

gawin.

Interviewer #3:[Aimee] Every time ba nagp-procrastinate ka, in the end,

nagreregret ka talaga?

Interviewee: Opo, sobra.

namang chance na you have time to do things, nangyayari parin
na nagpprocrastinate ka parin?

Interviewee: Opo.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Sa tingin mo bakit ganon? Bakit hindi mo siya

matuloy - tuloy?

Interviewee: Opo.

Interviewer #3:[Aimee] Uhm, ever since is it in your nature na

magprocrastinate or?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 86

Interviewee: Uhm, ano po. Nagp-procrastinate po ako nung Junior High

pero yung sakto lang. Pero nung Grade 11 & 12 po talaga yung,
parang sobra sobra na.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Sa tingin mo, bakit?

gadgets, as in.
So parang

discussion ganun, kasi yung focus mo.

Interviewee: Opo.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Kailan ka ba nagstart magprocrastinate kahit nung

Junior High?

pagprocrastinate mo?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 87

nung Grade 9.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] So parang naintroduce na sa’yo yung social media

noon?

Interviewee: Opo.

Interviewer #1:[Juliene] Okay, thank you!

Interviewee: Thank you po.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: EDILBERTO GONZAGA

Interviewer #1: [Aimee] Ang procrastination diba parang alam natin kung
anong meaning niya pero based from our study parang sa
procrastination merong active procrastination merong passive
procrastination.
task ibig sabihin parang mas naging productive ka. Ibig sabihin
productive yung pag procrastinate mo pero yung passive or
yung traditional procrastination. Ibig sabihin nun na pag
muna ganun your gonna ano do anything for your leisure time
ganun ganun tapos in the end mag pprocrastinate ka. To sum it
up yung active parang productive ka and positive yung na
So lets start with the interview proper.

Interviewer #2: [Nicole] Okay, First question Do you see yourself as a

procrastinator?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 88

Interviewee:[Edilberto] Yes.

Interviewee #2:[Nicole] Uhm, can you give an example and describe the
experience?

Interviewee: [Edilberto] Uhm procrastinating, I usually do the hardest things

kalian inaallot ko yung time ko in a given schedule that I make.
mahihirap I try to alam mo yun kasi kahit I use most of my time
sa pag sa leisure pero I try to do sa mga peta’s sa lahat ng mga
written works on time ay on the said deadline and I try not to like
give ahh time para pangunahan yung Gawain nay un so parang
parating on the spot yung mga gawa ko which lessens the
accuracy or quality pala ng uhm pinoprocrastinate ko.

Interviewee #2: [Nicole] How does it affect you?

Interviewee: [Edilberto] It affects me a lot kasi it affects my time with my

family it affects my time sa pag sa hobby ay it affects my time sa
mo kasi it’s a huge workload in a short span of time so it also
affects my grades kasi kapag nag procrastinate ako as what ia
yeah.

Interviewee #2: [Nicole] So negative talaga?

Interviewee: [Edilberto] Yes, very negative kahit na productive nga siya it’s
still negative.

Interviewer #1: [Aimee] So how do you perceive procrastination like, ano

yung thoughts mo about procrastination?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 89

Interviewee: [Edilberto] Well, uhm, thoughts about procrastination I think

procrastination is something is a habit, it’s a habit na parating,
na parating … its actually a cycle. A cycle and a habit na
leisure time rather than yung mismong actual work. Kapag
pinapangunahan mo yung leisure time mo we have this, I think
kasi we have this manana habit ng mga Filipinos and because
of that habit we tend to produce a works na parang alam mo
stress ganun. So I really think that it’s a really bad habit a really
bad cycle na dapat maalis ng subject.

Interviewee #2: [Nicole] So regarding your procrastination uhm why do you

procrastinate?

Interviewee: [Edilberto] I procrastinate dahil pinapangunahan ko yung

leisure time ko rather than my… rather than doing what suppose
to be done. Parang I, I I I develop ano ulit yung tanong?

Interviewee #2: [Nicole] Uhm, why do you procrastinate?

Interviewee: [Edilberto] Ay why do I procrastinate because I yun nga I used

ti use my time for leisure rather than use it for productivity and
pwedeng wala akong willing mag aral.

Interviewee #2: [Nicole] Have you tried doing something about it?

Interviewee: [Edilberto] Yes I tried to develop a mindset na na mas mas

natapos mo na agad and you don’t have to worry about it kasi I
natatapos mo na agad kasi you don’t have to worry about it you
don’t have to be stress about something kasi kung tapos mo na
edi tapos mon a so maiiwasan mo yung stressful situations na
yan.

Interviewee #2: [Nicole] Okay, uhm, do you think it also affects others in
your environment?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 90

Interviewee: [Edilberto] Yes para saakin kasi uhm, usually kasi I try to work
na I try to brainstorm a lot of ideas within uhm within my circle of
ako and at the same time uhm, kapag tawag dito I try to
procrastinate kapag may gagawing kaming assignment im
gonna set scheduled time na gagawin naming sabay sabay
para mas para mas magkaroon kami ng ideas on making it pero
I would set it on a date na malapit talaga sa deadline or sa
mismong deadline so it really affects my friends.

Interviewee #2: [Nicole] Okay, thank you.

Interviewee: [Edilberto] Ayun lang?

Interviewee #2: [Nicole] Oo, that’s all, thank you.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: ALEXANDRA BAYBAY

Interviewer #1: [Gian] Hello, were from 12-HA8 and our topic is about the
perspectives of Health Allied students on Traditional
Procrastination.
kayo?

Interviewee: Opo.

Interviewer #1:[Gian] Ano pong name niyo?

Interviewee: Alex Baybay.

Interviewer #1:[Gian] Do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee: Yes.

Interviewer #1:[Gian] Pano siya nakakaapekto sayo?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 91

Interviewee:Ano, its very stressful for me lalo na kapag ka the deadline is

before the deadline.

Interviewee:Uhm, kasi mostly for example yung emtech PETA, given yun
na matagal pa, matagal na pero actually I just did it days before
the deadline two days before the deadline. Actually kulang pa
yun kasi gahol sa oras kasi ang time consuming niya kasi nga
madaming ginagawa tas yun, it was really stressful for me kasi
yun.

wala kasi ako masyadong maisip kapag maaga ako gumagawa.
hassle.

Interviewer #2:[Juliene] So feeling mo mas effective ba sayo yung pag

procrastinate or mas nakakaano siya sayo nakaka hassle
ganun?

Interviewee:I think ano meron siyang both good side and bad side. Bad
side nun kasi yun nga nakakastress nakaka- nakakagahol sa
oras na kapag nga good side nun is marami akong ideas na
niyo yun? May quality pero since onti na lang yung time nun
mas nagiging panget siya, di naman sa in a way na panget kasi
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 92

execute niya ganun.

Interviewer #2:[Juliene] So yung pressure ba sa tingin mo yung pressure

magagandang ideas mo

Interviewee:I think oo.

Like diba meron

naaapektuhan yung mga tao sa paligid mo like your friends
ganun kunwari group work.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 93

Interviewee:Di naman masyado siguro. Di naman kasi ako yung tao na

kapag may pinagdadaanan, binubuhos ko sa iba. Siguro konti
I try my best na kahit na under pressure ako

baguhin yung pag pprocrastinate mo or ?

Interviewee: Oo, in a way, oo.

Interviewer #2:[Juliene] Like?

Interviewee:Like wala, nakahiga sa bahay yun nga, nanunuod minsan

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 94

Interviewer #2:[Juliene] Yun lang, thank you!

Interviewer #1:[Gian] Thank you miss.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: CLARENCE DIMALANTA

Interviewee:Yes I see myself as a procrastinator.

Interviewer #1: [John] Can you like give an example?

Interviewee:Oh I have a very nice example /laughs/.

how does it affect you?

Third party:Nadownload nyo na yon yung powerpoint? Alam mo yung

sinasabi mo trinatranscribe yan mamaya.

/laughs/

Interviewer #1: [John] Gago parehas tayo ampangit /laughs/

picture.

Interviewer #1: [John] Sino yan?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 95

Third party:Pano mo mababasa?

Interviewee:Izoozoom in yan ni sir.

yung reflection guy, 11:59 yung pasahan tapos nakapasa ako.

Interviewer #1: [John] How does it affect you?

Interviewee:None naman.

Interviewer #1: [John] Anong none? /laughs/

Interviewee:Ano syempre minsan nakakasad, ayun nga nakakasad kasi

ano may chance na hindi nako makapasa pero God is good, all
the time. All the time, God is good. Itranscribe niyo ‘to.

Interviewer #1: [John] Next question, how do you perceive procrastination?

Interviewee:It’s a bad thing.

Interviewer #1: [John] Yun lang ba masasabi mo dun? Hindi ba siya

beneficial?

Interviewee:It’s not beneficial because walang kwenta yung naipapasa ko

Third party:Ano yan?

picture.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 96

Interviewer #1: [John] Oh next! Why do you procrastinate?

Interviewee:Tamad kasi ako.

Interviewer #1: [John] Pero may, parang have you tried doing something
about it?

Interviewee:Wala.

Interviewer #1: [John] Wala?

Interviewee:Wala, I always leave plan and procrastinate again. /clap/

Interviewer #1: [John] Anyway, do you think it also affects others in you
environment? Kunyari sa group works ganon.

Interviewee:No, kasi pag group works naman marami naman nagbubuhat

kaya parang okay lang yan. /laughs/

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: EIVETH DANAO

Interviewer: [Juliene] Hi, ano pong pangalan niyo?

Interviewee:Tedreine Eiveth F. Danao.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee:Yes.

Interviewee:Procrastinator ako kasi uhm, everyday, meron akong parang

Parang-

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 97

As long as hindi siya
nacocompromise. Pero alam ko na, hindi sya maganda.

Interviewer:[Juliene] So you mean hindi nacocompromise yung products

nung ano mo?

/laughs/ Edi maganda
yung outcome.
maganda.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Ohh. So gusto mo bang baguhin yung habit mon a

‘yon?

Interviewee:Oo. Gusto kong baguhin.

Interviewee:Eh, as of the moment, parang ... kasi dati gumagawa lang ako
So parang
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 98

hindi rin concrete yung mga plano ko. Pero ngayon tinatry ko na
yung gumawa talaga ng may schedule.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Schedule. Sa tingin mo effective naman siya?

Interviewee:Ahh, effective naman siya.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Pero nagpoprocrastinate ka pa rin?

Interviewee:Oo.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Bakit?

baguhin.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Yung pag procrastinate?

Interviewee:Lalo na kapag nasanay ka.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Sa tingin mo bakit nagdedevelop yung procrastination

nagpoprocrastinate siguro kasi ayaw nila yung gagawin nila
sana dapat.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Ah, so parang kulang sila sa motibasyon parang

ganon?

Interviewee:Oo parang ganon. Kulang sila sa motivation. Kaya kasi … kasi

diba kapag may gusto kang gawin tsaka alam mong urgent siya,
diba gagawin mo kaagad. Pero yung sa pag procrastinate kasi
pipiliin mo talaga siyang hindi gawin.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 99

Interviewer:[Juliene] Kasi ayaw mo? Parang ganon?

Interviewee:Kasi ayaw mo, parang ganon.

Interviewer:[Juliene] So parang may aside sa parang lack of motivation,

Interviewer:[Juliene] Mm. So sa tingin mo paano nakakaapekto yung pag

procrastinate mo sa environment or sa other people?

Interviewee:Ah. Para siguro as a whole syempre diba pag yung halimbawa

mapupush-back pa at lalo pang lalala yung problem.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Paanong pag procrastinate sa malalaking bagay?

Interviewee:Parang for example ano diba may problema sa, halimbawa,

nalang.

Parang ganon?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 100

Interviewee:Oo. Nag-aapply din siya.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Okay. Thank you.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: RIA TUBON

Interviewee:Hi.

Interviewer:[Juliene] Ano pong pangalan niyo?

Interviewee: I’m Jan Ria Y. Tubon.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Uhm, do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee:Yes.

yung works like the day before the deadline kahit na siguro
dalawang lingo na binigay ganun.

Interviewer: Bakit mo yun ginagawa?

Interviewee:Hmm, uhm, bat ko ginagawa? I just hmm, like I feel na di

naman siya ganun ka importante like gawin, I mean like nafefeel
ng matagal before the deadline.

pagprocrastinate mo?

Interviewee:Nung grade 9 kami may flash PETA kami yung basta yung
animation tapos uhm siguro one month or three weeks siya
binigay tapos yung mga time during the lab binibigay din para
gawin yun pero wala akong ginagawa tas the night before ko
lang siya ginawa.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 101

Interviewer: So ano naman naging epekto nun sayo? Nung ano?

Interviewee:So syempre na stress ako tas wala rin akong tulog tas
nagpalpitate din ako nun kasi di pa ako natutulog so nag kape
ako nun.

Interviewer:[Juliene] So feeling mo ba worth it yung stress mo, yung

pagpalpitate mo, yung wala kang tulog dun sa pagprocrastinate
mo?

Interviewee:For me oo, kasi like satisfied ako dun sa nakuha kong grade
kahit na the night before ko lang siya ginawa. Tapos ewan kasi
pag, pag matagal pa yung deadline di ako naiinspire gawin yung
mga school works ganun tas wala ako maisip na gagawin if
matagal pa yung deadline.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Sa tingin mo bakit ganun bakit di ka naiinspire or bakit

wala kang maisip?

So

like kasi ewan iniisip ko na ahh madami pang time so tapos

nag gawin or something?

Interviewee:Oo.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Parang ganun. Uhm, gusto mo bang baguhin ang pag
procrastinate mo?

Interviewee:Ah.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Bakit? How do you perceive procrastination ba?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 102

ganun?

Interviewee:Oo.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Okay okay gets naman. So parang gusto mob a siya

Interviewee:Uhm, as a whole or?

Interviewer: [Juliene] Oo.

Interviewee:I think pag dating ng college gusto ko siyang baguhin.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Bakit?

mataas yung nakukuha kong grades so syempre sa college

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 103

Interviewer: [Juliene] So, kahit noon di ka nagbalak na baguhin yung pag

procrastinate mo?

Interviewer: [Juliene] So sa tingin mo yung pag procrastinate mo

nakakaapekto sa ibang tao ganun?

Interviewee:Uhm, I think oo.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Bakit? Sa paanong paraan?

Interviewee:Kasi kunwari nag procrastinate ako kunwari may plans yung

naming school works.

Interviewer: [Juliene] Ah, okay. Thank you.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: RICARDO MAGPOC

Interviewer:[Ramon] Do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee:Yes. I am a procrastinator

Interviewer:[Ramon] So if you said the you procrastinate. Can you give

examples?

Interviewee:Examples yung, pwede ba tagalog? Ah yun nga po, yung nga,

what I said earlier nga na matutulog nalang instead doing
assignment ganun ako madalas kase palagi akong tulog tas

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, can you describe yung pag proprocrastinate mo

ano nafefeel mo pag ginagawa mo?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 104

Interviewee: Syempre nandun parin yung thought na may kailangan pa

ginagawa to.” Pero ultimately, ginagawa ko parin. Yung
ginagawa ko imbes na yung homework, there’s a little
conscience in my mind kahit nagproprocrastinate ako.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Do you think yung pagprocrastinate mo worth it?

Interviewee: Worth it? Ah teka, in some ways para sakin worth it naman
dahil minsan kasi nagproprocrastinate ako dahil baka may
academic. Worth it naman dahil nakakaearn ako ng experience.
Pero not worth it dahil nagcracram ako so mahihirapan din ako.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Sa tingin mo, bakit tayo nagpprocrastinate?

Interviewee:Bat ba tayo nagpprocrastinate? Kasi, ano tayo. Kasi feeling

natin marami pa tyaong time. “Ah, bukas nalang. Marami pa
tayong time, bukas nalang.” Hanggang sa dumating yung time
yung day before the deadline. Saka mo palang gagawin.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So paano nakakaffect yung procrastination?

Interviewee: Mas ano, mas nagiging tamad ako. Naisip ko na ay, kaya ko
naman i-cram kaya ko naman gawin mamaya. Parang yung
Mañana habit and yung ano ang over confidence na. May over
confidence ako, kaya minsan nahihirapan din ako.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, nabanggit moyung mañana habit. Do you think its

connected to our culture?

Interviewee: Like what my dad said, regarding the Mañana habit that came
from the Spanish people ganun. Mga español, yeah it’s in our
culture na kasi ano uhmm I consider filipino people. Some
Filipino people lazy, kaya minsan nasasama rin yang mañana
habit na yan.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 105

Interviewer:[Ramon] Have you tried to, parang maprevent tong

procrastination?

Interviewee:I have. I currently am trying not to procrastinate.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So sa tingin mo, effective ba ‘to, parang may

gratification kapag, kapag naaccomplish mo?

Interviewee: Yeah, effective naman.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So, sa tingin mo pag nagproprocrasatinate ka,

naapektohan din sa ibang tao?

Interviewee: If ano, if group work or group peta or group activity yung task
na kailangan. Syempre maapektuhan sila dahil hinihin- may
sakin.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Thank you!

Interviewee:Goodluck.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: THEA ESCULTURA

Interviewer:[Ramon] Do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee:Yes.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So sinabi mo na nagproprocrastinate ka. Can you give

examples?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 106

more than two weeks already and last minute ko siya gagawin.
By last minute the day before the deadline ko siya gagawin.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, idescribe mo yung experience mo habang nag

proprocrastinate ka. Ano nafefeel mo habang ginagawa mo
yun?

Interviewee: Uhm most of the time, alam ko na kailangan ko na gawin

and kailangan ko imanage yung time ko but at the same time,
sobrang tinatamad ako and prinoprocrastinate ko eh. Kinakaya
ko naman gawin so, cinocontinue ko parin.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, sa tingin mo, bakit ka nag proprocrastinate?

Interviewee: Because, I like enjoying my life.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So sa tingin mo, worth it ba yung pag pro-

procrastinate mo?

Interviewee:Uhmm, define worth it?

Interviewer:[Ramon] Like, satisfied kaba?

Interviewee: Okay lang. Oo, I’ve survived so far..

Interviewee: Yes, basta nagagawa mo parin yung trabaho.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So paano to nakakaapekto sa pagpro-procrastinate

mo?

Interviewee:I guess pag nag pile up na lahat - lahat, here comes the mental
breakdown.

parang stress, nasstress?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 107

Interviewee:Eh ganun, nagpi-pile up. Naooverwhelm sa dami ng gagawin

pero at the same time since alam ko naman na kailangan kong
parin gawin id still do it anyway. I’d complain but I’d do it, such a
Thomasian.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So since you procrastinate, nag try kana ba iavoid or

iprevent yung procrastination pag ginagawa mo?

Interviewee: So, well I guess ang pinakamalapit ko is nag susulat ako ng

kailangan kong gawin and anong time ko sitya kailangan gawin
at kailangan kong goal for the day but other than that yun lang.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So, ginagawan mo ng schedule ganun?

Interviewee: Yeah.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, effective ba? Nagagawan mo naman ang

schedule?

Interviewee:Yeah nagagawan ko naman.

Interviewer:[Ramon] You think its effective?

Interviewee:Uh-hm.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So…

Interviewee:Discipline will succeed.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Sa tingin mo kapag nag proprocrastinate ka,

nakakaapekto ba siya sa ibang tao?

Interviewee:Kinda. Kasi kunwari, groupwork and then hinihintay nila yung

Gagawin ko naman na since I can do it in
a short time sasabihin na nila.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 108

Interviewee:Nakakaapekto pero onti lang.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So, nakakapekto pero onti lang. Minimal, so okay lang

mag procrastinate?

Interviewee:Yes, in moderation. I’m compassionate sa tamang panahon.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Okay, thank you.

Interviewee:Welcome.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: KIMBERLY YU

Interviewer: [Ramon] Do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee:Yes. *laughs*

Interviewer:[Ramon] Can you give examples?

Interviewee:Um, like yun sa sinabi mo na kapag may kailangan gawin I

really do the assignment. Kunyari kapag assignment, like motto
ko talaga “Due tomorrow, do tomorrow.”
can still perform good kaya masyado akong nagpoprocastinate
eh.

Interviewer: [Ramon] So sa self-confidence nanggagaling procrastination

mo?

Interviewee:Oo.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So ano nafefeel mo kapag nagpoprocrastinate ka?

Parang describe mo lang experience.

Interviewee:Somewhat sa una, medyo wala. I don’t think about it much eh

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 109

na, minsan, nagsisisi ako kasi.. ay ano it takes time pala pero
kaya naman. Minsan naman I’m like oh madali naman pala buti
nalang di ko pa ginawa. Yung ganon. Kumbaga I don’t really
regret when I procrastinate kasi I don’t procrastinate too much,

Interviewer:[Ramon] So sa tingin mo worth it ba ang pag poprocrastinate

mo?

Interviewee:Yes kasi there is, we’re talking about ano diba, sa schoolworks
ganon?

Interviewer:[Ramon] Hindi, yung traditional.

Interviewee:Yung pagprocrastinate sa anything? Anything at all? Well, I

think the reason why I procrastinate naman is because I
manage my time. Kumbaga more of a time management na I
like to do leisure more than to work kaya okay lang sakin.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So worth it lang yung leisure?

Interviewee:Oo minsan worth it talaga kasi I like enjoying life more eh. Yun.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So paano nakakaapekto yung procrastination sa’yo?

Interviewee:Hmm. Well actually in a good way, it makes me … it made me

better in working under pressure or stress. Like now, di naman
ako, actually bihira akong mastress kahit ang dami nating
ginagawa sa school or stuff I have to do kaya okay lang sakin.
I’m good naman with stress and stuff because of
procrastinating. It has a good effect on me naman.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Did you ever try— Meron bang naging bad effect siya
sa’yo?

Interviewee:Meron, medyo muntik nako kapusin sa oras and sometimes

kasi when you procrastinate may ibang tao na nandadamay
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 110

which means they’ll have to wait for you since you didn’t do it
kaagad.

tao?

Interviewee:Yes nakakaapekto siya.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Pano siya nakakaapekto?

Interviewee:Because if a person will procrastinate and it’s a team effort, I

tried but I failed.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Anong ginawa mo para ma ano… ano yung

intervention na ginawa mo para magtry magstop?

Interviewee:Well I tried doing my schoolworks early and on time. Kumbaga

Kasi
usually I don’t do things right away. Pero wala rin, tinamad rin
ako so I just ended up procrastinating more.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Thank you!

Interviewee:Welcome!
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 111

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: WARISARAH TOQUIRON

Interviewer #1:[Nicole] Good evening po. Uhm.

perspectives of Health Allied students on traditional
procrastination. Uhm. Ano po yung pangalan niyo?

Interviewee: Warisarah Toquiron.

Interviewer #1: [Nicole] Yung first question po. Do you see yourself as a
procrastinator?

Interviewee: Yes.

Interviewer #1: [John] Can you give examples and describe the
experiences?

Interviewer #1:[Nicole] Uhm, how does it affect you?

Interviewee:Parang kulang sa tulog tapos di alam yung gagawin nag

papanic.

Interviewer #1: [Nicole] Uhm, how do you perceive procrastination?

Interviewee:Ano yung masasabi?

Interviewer #1:[Nicole] Opo, ano yung tingin mo sa procrastination.

Interviewer #2:[John] Is it good? Is it bad? Ganon.

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 112

nasasatisfy.

Interviewer #2:[John]Next question. Why do you procrastinate?

Interviewee:Mas pinipiling manuod ng vlogs kesa gawin yung–

Interviewer #2:[John]Uhm. Have you tried doing something about it?

Parang macope up that something.

Interviewee:Di magpaload para walang data.

Interviewers: /laughs/ Pagkaayaw, wag ka mag paload.

Interviewer #1:[Nicole] Effective ba? Yung ano yung coping mo yung

ginagawa mo?

Interviewee:Hindi kasi nagpapaload din naman ako.

Interviewer #2:[John] Do you think it also affects other in your

environment?

Interviewee:Yung pag pprocrastinate ko?

Interviewer #2:[John] arang naaapektuhan ba yung mga friends mo?

Interviewee:No, no. Kasi hindi naman sila. May sarili silang gawa iba yung
sakin.

Interviewer #2:[John] Kahit sa groupworks kunyari.

Interviewee:Ah, groupworks. Pag groupworks hindi, hindi ako

nagpprocrastinate.

Interviewer #1:[Nicole] Pero kapag mga individual?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 113

Interviewee:Individual?

Thank you, thank you so
much for your time. Thank you.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: NEIL URANZA

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee: Yes.

nagagawa ngayon (laugh) ilang oras nalang may roon ako
(laugh) pero nakatambay parin ako ngayon (continues laughter)
so mamaya ganon procrastinate nalang ganun pero I can, I
belive naman na matatapos.

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] Pwede mo ba idescribe yung pagprocrastinate mo

ngayon?

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So bakit ka nagpoprocrastinate?

pagka ano eh pagka hapit, syempre hapit eh edi mas mabilis
matatapos so kapag ginawa mo yung mga gusto mo muna tas
tsaka mo hinapit magagawa mo naman lahat /laugh/
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 114

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] So kapag ano, sa tingin mo worth it ba yung

pagpoprocrastinate?

Interviewee:Hmmm.

kaya ah okay lang worth it yun.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So (clears throat) Nakakaramdam ka ba,

nasestress ka ba ganon kapag nagpoprocrastinate ka?

Interviewee:Uhm, oo.

maging kalma kasi wala namang mababago kapag inistress mo
sarili mo.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon]So nagtry ka na ba na baguhin to or parang may

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 115

damay damay nalang.

Interviewer #2:[Ramon] So nagdadamay damay nalang? Paano kapag sa

groupworks ganon?

mahirap yun so kailangan.

Interviewer #2:[Ramon] Kailangan?

Interviewee:Ayun! Kailangan magcomply ka kailangan ayusin mo yung

buhay mo.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: PATRICIA TAMAYO

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee: Uhm, yes pero depende sa situation.

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] Uhm pwede ielaborate mo yung “depende sa

situation”?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 116

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So pag mas madali ay masipoprocrastinate mo?

Interviewee:Mhm.

nagwowork nang better kapag under pressure ganun.
Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So worth it ba magprocrastinate?

Interviewee:Uhm depende naman kasi pagkilala mo naman yung sarili mo

at alam mo na magagawa mo yun worth it naman siguro.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So (cough) bakit ka nagpoprocrastinate?

Interviewee:Kasi minsan tinatamad ako (laugh) kasi alam mo yun kasi

Interviewee:Oo kasi, kunwari yung PETAs uhm, tinatry kong irelax yung
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 117

yung pinakamalapit yung deadline tsaka yung pinakamadadali
tas parang ano parang nagkakaroon ako ng time table parang
ganon na inaayos ko yung schedule ko. Pero minsan kasi
kapag ano di mo naman kasi macocontrol yung ano yung oras
mo minsan so ayun ang nangyayari nagpoprocrastinate.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So uhm, effective ba yung pagcreate ng timetable?

Interviewee:Oo sobra kasi doon wala akong nakakalimutan tapos

parang ganun.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] Uhm kapag nagpoprocrastinate ka nakakaapekto

ba to sa ibang tao ganon?

magtulungan tapos kapag may nahanap na kami, or may pwede
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 118

na kaming maitulong sinasabi na namin agad. Parang

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So hindi kayo nagpoprocrastinate kapag

groupworks?

Interviewee:Mhm.
Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So kanina namention mo na nagpoprocrastinate
ka. Paano siya nakakaapekto sayo?

Interviewee:Uhm, ah, wait lang. /laugh/, uh minsan kasi ah.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: RAINE MIGUEL E. GONZALES

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] Are you a procrastinator?

Interviewee: Yes.

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] Uhm so if you procrastinate, can you give

examples on how you procrastinate?

Interviewee:Uhmmm, in terms of traditional parang instead of gagawa ng

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] Can you describe yung experience mo habang

future meron panaman akong time para iaccomplish yung
kailangan gawin so ayun satisfying.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 119

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] Masasabi mo ba a worth it mag procrastination?

Interviewee:Depende sa situation pero, most of the time worth it para

sakin.

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] Paano yung pagproprocrastinate mo, paano siya

nakakaapekto sayo?

Interviewee:In terms of ano, psychological, mental health, okay siya kasi

nakakasupport nakakaano. Kapag stress ako so syempre,
parang stress reliever siya para sakin pero in terms of academic
performance hindi siya ano, not all the time positive I can say na
may negative effects din, naproprolong yung kailangan gawin.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] I: So sa tingin mo? Bakit? Bakit may

nagproprocrastinate?

Interviewee:Uhmmm, for ano siguro, for others it’s a form of stress reliever
tapos for others naman it’s a form of saying na…. form of a
Pero for now let’s have fun,
let’s have fun as of this moment.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] How about you? Do you think the same?

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] Ah, so. Pero nastrestress ka parin after mo mag

procrastinate?

Interviewee:Yeah.
Interviewer: [Ramon]: Pero naproprolong lang I mean na dedelay so, may

Interviewee:Yeah.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] Na mag change?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 120

Interviewee:Opo.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] Can you give examples?

Interviewee:Kagabi, yung ano. Yun kasi nag macao kami tapos sabi ni
tapos nag enjoy kami masyado. Nag laro kami Nintendo switch,

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So, nag try ka na ilessen yung time ng

procrastination?

Interviewee:Yeah.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So, sa tingin mo?

Interviewee:Yeah.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So, sa tingin mo., yung sa yung way of preventing

procrastination mo, do you think? how do you think ah, paano to
nakakaaffect sa procrastination? yung interventions?

Interviewee:Intervention?

maaga parang nilelessen mo yung time ng procrastination is it
effective?

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 121

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So kapag nagproprocrastinate ka, do you think it

also affect other people?

Interviewee:Yeah kasi ano kapag kadalasan kapag, sa sasabihin mo. “Tara

ano nalang tayo, milk tea nalang. Wag na tayo mag aral, bukas
nalang.”
Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So nakakaapekto siya in terms na parang
nadadamay din siya sa pagproprocrastinate. How about sa
group works ganun din ba?

Interviewee:Ahh opo, kasi if ikaw mismo sinasabi mo na ah. Madalas mong

sasabihin na nagproprocrastinate ka or na complacent ka as a
person, ang tendency yung iba nagiging complacent din, so
ayun.

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] Sige, thank you.

Interviewee:O sige, thank you din.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: JOHN ALVIN

Interviewer: [Nicole] Good afternoon po, we are from 12 HA8 and yung
study po Namin Perspectives of Health Allied Students on
Traditional Procrastination and you have been chosen as a
respondent. Uhm, explain ko lang yung ano traditional
procrastination.
gapon. So let’s start with the question number 1: Do you see
yourself as a procrastinator?

John Alvin: Permi permi.

Interviewer: [Nicole] /laughs/ Uhm, can you give example and determine
the experience?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 122

or about specific time na kailangan ko mag aral, tapos kung
Youtube, tapos Music diba? Mga maraming dramas sa life, yun
talaga yung kadalasang naglelead sayo towards procrastinating
and then of course yung factor pa nung lagi kang pagod at
puyat tapos nag aalaram ka hindi.

Interviewer: [Nicole] Magising?

tapos naglelead sakin na maging guilty sometimes and very
unproductive talaga yung ganoong sitwasyon or ganoong cycle
ng life mo as a student. So yung talaga yung daily basis ko pero
as an, pero as an Health Allied student, very common talaga

Interviewer: [Nicole] So how does it affect you like yung positive

John Alvin: Hmm?

Interviewer: [Nicole] How does it affect you? Positive ba siya or negative?

na dumadating sa isip mo na like napipicture out mo or naririnig
katamaran, or procrastination, talaga it’s very unavoidable, hindi
tlaga maiiwasan yung ganoong sitwasyon.

Interviewer: [Nicole]Okay so next question. How do you perceive

procrastination?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 123

John Alvin: Yung?

Interviewer: [Nicole] Perceive procrastination, parang ano sa tingin mo or

ung outlook mo sa kanya in general in procrastination? Anong
nagpopop sa utak mo?

John Alvin: Ano it really hinders me, in such a way na yun nga, like
sa sarili mo, time sa pag aaral mo lalo na as a, as a part of
So, kailangan ma utilize mo talaga yung sarili mo or yung
specific time or specific effort na kailangan mo towards attaining
that, that kind of standard ngayon, okay?

Interviewer: [Nicole] Why do you procrastinate?

John Alvin: Why do I procrastinate? Pano nga ba?

Interviewer: [Nicole] Bakit ka nagproprocrastinate?

John Alvin: Nagproprocrastinate ako kasi umm, parang umm /laughs/ as a

legit procrastinator, parang simula nung … wait. Kasi medyo
nakasanayan na rin na cramming talaga or crammer and yun
parang sistema mo na yun pero at the end of the day
marerealize mo talaga na it will lead you to a very dangerous
pero ano hahaha at the end of the day marerealize mo na: ay
nagkakaron kana ng anxiety na, bakit ganoon? Bakit ganyan?
Bakit parang ang bilis ng oras? So parang pagsisihan mo talaga

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 124

Interviewer: [Nicole] So have you tried doing something about it?

John Alvin: Have you tried doing something about it? /laughs/ I think, umm,
with my own motivation and own perception, meron din akong
nakakaya kong bumuo ng strategic plans and formulas with how
to deal with these kind of behavior, so yun.

Interviewer: [Nicole]Umm do you think it also affects others in your

environment? yung procrastination mo? Nakakaapekto ba sa
iba? Or sayo lng?

John Alvin: Ah not really that much, sakin lang talaga kung nakakaaffect

Interviewer: [Nicole] /laughs/

John Alvin: Diba? /laughs/ so yun kailangan pantayan mo talaga yung

Interviewer: [Nicole] Okay thank you, sir. That’s all.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: JEAN GARNER

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee: Ah yes, I see myself as one.

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] Pwede ka magbigay ng examples?

Interviewee:Ah for example ah kahapon yung ff naming ano ah pasahan na

nagagawa.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 125

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] Can you describe yung habang

nagpoprocrastinate ka kung anong nafefeel mo ganun?

Interviewee:Ahm syempre nung nagtatambay kami masaya kasi kasama

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So bakit ka nagpoprocrastinate?

kahit ano yung oras.

Interviewer #1: [Ramon] Sa tingin mo ba worth it ba yung

pagpoprocrastinate?

Interviewee:Ahm feel ko naman worth it yon kasi we’ll never know kung
maganda ba yung outcome kasi usually naman diamonds are
made under pressure so /laugh/

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So, nagtry ka na ban a ibahin yung ano, like

nalang at the end of the day.
Interviewer #1:[Ramon] So sinabi mo nagtry ka magavoid, ano ginawa mo

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 126

tao?

Interviewee:Yung procrastination?

Interviewer #1:[Ramon] Oo.

Interviewee:Ahm feeling ko oo kasi may tinatawag tayong ano butterfly

effect halimbawa ikaw, nakita mo sarili mo as procrastinator pag

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: THERCELYN MORALLOS

Interviewer:[Ramon] Do you see yourself as a procrastinator?

Interviewee: Yes

nagprocrastinate?
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 127

Interviewee: Uhm, everytime, uhm, maspinipili ko magtwitter and social

media before gumawa ng gawain.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Uhm, idescribe mo yung experience mo kapag inuuna

mo yung twitter over sa mga ano.

Interviewee: Uhm example after school, imbes na, uhm, gawin yung
activities na dapat gawin kasi example for deadline niya
tomorrow or the next day, masuunahin ko munang mag twitter
or facebook and then sa madaling araw ako gagawa.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So sa tingin mo ba worth it?

Yung

pagprocrastinate?

Interviewee: Ahm, yung time uhm example ayun madaling araw edi mas

Interviewee: For me, oo kuntento pa rin ako.

Interviewer:[Ramon] So masasabi mo na worth it ang pagprocrastinate

mo?

Interviewer:[Ramon] So bakit ka nagpoprocrastinate?

Interviewee: Ano, may ibang bagay ako na ano, may iba akong interest at
hindi ko magawang hindi bigyan yun ng time, So ayun
nagpoprocrastinate ako.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 128

Interviewee: Ayun nga twitter, ahm may kpop idol ako, and then masinuuna

na-aavoid.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Sa tingin mo nakakaapekto ba to sa ibang tao?

Interviewee: Procrastinate with- oo pero with limits.

Interviewer:[Ramon] Can you describe kung pano ka magprocrastinate? In

a group?

Interviewee: Wala same pa rin mas uunahin ko yung ibang bagay, yun nga,
twitter ganun.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 129

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTION: JOVI ANNE MACARAEG

Interviewer:[John] So, Good afternoon! We are 12HA - 8 and we are

conducting research entitled Perspective of Health Allied
Students on Traditional Procrastination. Please state your
name.

Interviewee: Im Jovi Ann Macaraeg from 12HA – 3.

Interviewer:[John] So first question is, do you see yourself as a

procrastinator?

Interviewee: I believe yes.

Interviewer:[John] How do you say so? Are there some, uhm, times na na
proprocrastinate ka? Could you state some examples?

Interviewee: Uhm, mostly lang pag may school works or specifically peta.
So ginagawa ko siya 2 or 3 hours before.

Interviewer:[John] Ah. While procrastinating, how does it affect you like

physically mentally ganun?

Interviewee: Uhmmm physically wait sige, sa men ... mentally siguro ano
mabilis akong gumagawa mas effective sakin yung late ako
nagstastart ng school works kesa maaga.

Interviewer:[John] Yung kanina sa example mo padescribe mo. Paano ka

nag proprocrastinate?

Inter viewee: Ang nangyari may mga diba, kunwari ahead of time binigay
yung teacher yung requirements. Nagstastart ako few hours
before nung deadline, ganun.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 130

Interviewer:[John] Wow.

Inter viewee: Kahit one week na binibigay.

Interviewer:[John] Anong ginagawa mo sa like uhmm sa- In the span na

Ayun siguro rest o kaya
ibang school works na madali. Ako kasi masinuuna ko yung
madadaling school works kesa sa mahihirap

Interviewer:[John] Ano satingin niyo yung ano, sa tingin mo worth it ba

yung procrastination hanggang dun sa ano… like is
procrastinating worth it?

Interviewee: Hmm I think in general hindi.
Soo .. for me okay naman pero
mag proprocrastinate ganun. Pero ayun okay naman effective
naman siya sakin.

Interviewer:[John] So, sinabi mo next time di ka na mag

proprocrastinate.

ganto. FF PETA ganun.
So

ako. Hindi maiiwasan.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 131

Interviewer:[John] Sa tingin mo, kapag nagproprocrastinate ka,

naapektohan ba yung ibang ano, like kunwari sa group works?

Interviewee: Uhmm, I think oo. Pero kasi in my case parang lahat kami nag
deadline.
deadline.

Interviewer:[John] Kahit nagproprocrastinate kayo as a group, hindi naman

masyado naapektohan sa quality? Parang may nag aaway?

Interviewee: Sa quality, ah sa away. Hmmm wala naman kasi-wait,

depende. Minsan kasi depende sa group mates ko. Kunwari
medyo alam mo yung ahead of time gumagawa. Syempre
kailangan mo makisabay so, ayun. So nakadepende sa intimacy
sa groupmates.

Interviewer:[John] Sige, thank you!
