Step-by-Step Guide for Conducting Staff Development Workshop

Needs Assessment:
After collaborating with my site supervisor and instructional coaches, we determined that the
greatest need was to highlight our Accelerated Reader (AR) program and what it has to offer.
We have had a large number of teacher turn-over and felt that this would be an opportunity for
those teachers to do some pre-planning and thinking toward next year. As an entire K-8
community we would like to support literacy through a positive school culture and would love
to see that done with proper implementation of AR. This workshop will be the first of many and
will be an overview of AR with an emphasis on GOALS and INCENTIVES.

Instructional Goals:
The instructional goal of this workshop is to support literacy through school culture and to
demonstrate to the teachers how to implement Accelerated Reader programs in their
classroom, to set appropriate reading goals, and to plan for reading opportunities beyond the
assessment.

Objectives:
The teachers will be able to:
 Administer STAR Reading Assessments effectively
 Set and adjust reading goals based on student data
 Set clear reading expectations
 Provide data reports regarding student progress
 Help students find books at his/her ZPD
 Participate and plan reading extension projects
 Participate and plan reading incentives
 Ensure that students are reading every day (all curricular areas)
