MEE 3191 Engineering Thermodynamics I

Due: 4/4/2019 in class

Problem 1
A mixing chamber is used to combine two propane gas flows to a single flow. One flow has a
volume flow rate of 0.7 m3/s at 22˚C, and the other flow is 3 m3/s at 150˚C. Determine the exit
temperature, if the pressure at both inlets and the outlet is 1.3 atm, and no heat is exchanged
between the flows. Neglect changes in kinetic and potential energies.

Problem 2
A turbocharged powerboat engine uses an air intake system that consists of a compressor and a
water-cooled intercooler. Air enters the compressor at 20˚C, atmospheric pressure and flow
velocity of 1 m/s, and exits at 80˚C, 180 kPa and 10 m/s. Then it flows through the intercooler,
where it cools down to 35˚C. The intercooler uses outside water at 15˚C to cool the air flow, and
the water exits the intercooler at 30˚C and a mass flow rate of 0.2 kg/s. Find (a) the specific work
in the compressor, (b) the specific heat transferred from air to water in the intercooler, (c) the mass
flow rate for air, (d) the cross-sectional area of the compressor inlet.

Problem 3
A 75-hp car engine burns fuel with the energy content of 35 MJ/kg at a rate of 5 g/s. Find the
thermal efficiency of the engine and the rate of heat transfer rejected to the ambient.

Problem 4
A residential AC system with a SEER rating of 14 uses 0.75 kW of electrical power. Determine
the cooling rate and the rate of discarded heat transfer. Find the EER rating of the AC system. Let
google help you find conversion formulas. Show all work and check units.

Problem 5
Refrigerant R-134a enters the evaporator in an A/C unit (COP = 1.4) at –20˚C, x=0.3, and leaves
at –15˚C, x=1. The mass flow rate is 0.0025 kg/s. Find the net work input.
