N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Joanna Tomas Date of Activity: 01/08/19 and 3/19/19 Faculty name: Yvette

Mathesen (SILC); Mark Falconer (ACLS)

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be

specific about the purpose and your role):

For my first professional activity, I volunteered at the SILC lab before the semester started.

Where was this held and what was program/activity length?

My first professional activity was held at the SILC lab at the College of Nursing. I volunteered

for four hours. My main duty was keeping inventory of the supplies, handing out lab kits, and

making sure that each student had what they needed in their kits. My second professional activity

was with Eclipse CPR, which is located at 4500 E. Speedway. This activity was 6 hours long. I

took this class in order to get my ACLS certification, which involved videos, discussions, and

hands-on practice with mannequins regarding common cardiovascular problems.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

My experience at the SILC lab was valuable to me because I was able to see the amount of work

that it takes in order to organize supplies and ensure that simulations will go smoothly for us

nursing students. It made me appreciate the staff at the SILC a lot more because they dedicate so

much time in organizing and operating the lab. For instance, multiple semesters were picking up

their lab kits that day, which required a lot of planning beforehand and adaptability during the day.

For ACLS, learning about the different interventions for cardiac arrest, bradycardia, and

tachycardia was valuable because all of the information was applicable for nurses. Since I want to

work in the trauma ICU, it was beneficial for me because the situations discussed were very

common in the clinical environment. The class also talked about the importance of team dynamics
and communication in fast-paced situations, which I believe is the core of a successful outcome in

codes.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why or

why not? (Describe)

I would recommend both professional experiences in the future. Volunteering at the SILC lab

gives students a unique opportunity to go “behind the scenes” of the lab. Since the lab has had

problems with students leaving the lab in a disorganized manner, I think it would be a great

experience to see how much work the lab does so students can appreciate it more. It also

refamiliarizes the students with the equipment commonly used in hospitals. In terms of ACLS, I

would recommend it to students who know that they want to work in critical care settings. The

instructor did an excellent job of being entertaining and informative at the same time. It also

refreshes the concepts that we learned in third semester, as well as teaches new information

about code situations, medications, and other interventions for cardiovascular emergencies.
