Polar Coordinates

Examples

1. Let P (−2, 2 3) be a point in R2
and (r, θ) be a polar representation
of P . Then P (θ) (the terminal
point of θ) is in the 2nd quadrant.
Thus,

q √
r= (−2)2 + (2 3)2 = 4 and

y 2 3 √ 2π
tan θ = = =− 3⇒θ= .
x −2 3

Therefore, a polar representation of

P is (4, 2π3
). Other polar
representations of P are (−4, − π3 ),
(4, 8π
3
), (−4, − 7π
3
), etc.

Polar Coordinates

Examples

1. Let P (−2, 2 3) be a point in R2 2. The cartesian equation
and (r, θ) be a polar representation
of P . Then P (θ) (the terminal x2 + y 2 − 4x = 0
point of θ) is in the 2nd quadrant. ⇒ (x − 2)2 + (y − 0)2 = 4
Thus,
is a circle center at C(2, 0) and
radius equal to 2. In polar, we have
q √
r= (−2)2 + (2 3)2 = 4 and
r2 −4r cos θ = 0
⇒ r(r − 4 cos θ) = 0

y 2 3 √ 2π ⇒ r = 0 or r − 4 cos θ = 0.
tan θ = = =− 3⇒θ= .
x −2 3 But r = 0 is just the pole (0, 0).
Thus, the given cartesian equation
Therefore, a polar representation of has polar equation
P is (4, 2π3
). Other polar
representations of P are (−4, − π3 ), r = 4 cos θ.
(4, 8π

Examples
3. Given a polar equation,

In cartesian, we have

⇒ (r cos θ)2 − (r sin θ)2 = 10
⇒ x2 − y 2 = 10.

Hence, the given polar equation is

In cartesian, we have

r(3 − 2 cos θ) = 4
In cartesian, we have
⇒ 3r − 2r cos θ = 4
⇒ (3r)2 = (2r cos θ + 4)2
r2 ( cos2 θ − sin2 θ) = 10
