Lesson Plan for Copy-Cat Warm Up

Grade: 5​ th
Duration: ​2 minutes

Repertoire: ​Good Morning Blues
Other Teaching Materials: r​ ecording of “Good Morning Blues”
Vocabulary: ​blues, 12 bar blues
Focus/Concept: ​this is a warm up that will get the kids moving in rhythm and will introduce the
blues genre
Lesson Outcomes: ​Students will:
● Follow the leader’s movements (perform)
● Keep a steady beat with their rhythms
● Become familiar with the genre of blues through listening

Teaching Procedure
Prepare
1. Ask students to stand in the circle, boys on black dots and girls on white dots
2. Explain that today’s song is a blues
3. Blues originated in the Deep South of the United States. It incorporates spirituals and
work songs (like learned in previous unit)
Present
1. Play the song and ask students to copy your movements
2. Keep a steady beat with the movements, and perform a variety of movements with this
steady beat (tapping legs, stomping feet etc.)
3. Turn from side to side during “turn from side to side” part
Practice and Extend
1. Did anyone notice any new instruments/instruments that stood out in that song?
Assess and Close
1. Ask students to sit down on their dots
2. Hand the activity off for syncopated rhythm cards
