HDF 415

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR

LEARNING CONTRACT
Goal:
To identify and utilize my strengths when training new facilitators for the North

Woods Challenge Course that aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored

programs and activities of URI’s Center for Student Leadership Development.

Activity:

For my learning contract in HDF 415, I trained 14 new facilitators at the North

Woods Challenge Course on Sunday, March 2nd and Saturday, March 23rd. As a student

manager, it was my job along with the four other student managers, to implement an

effective weekend-long training program to develop new facilitators. The first day of

training entailed going through the process of what a program would look like and

facilitating the elements for the new facilitators to observe. The second day of training

involved the new facilitators putting on a program for management so that we can

observe and give feedback. Each day was about eight hours of training, which also

included time to bond and get accustomed to working with each other.

To start, during this training I utilized my strengths of strategic, relator, and

discipline. To start, I needed to ensure that all the facilitators were fully understanding

each part of the program process. Therefore, I used my strength of strategic to get right to

the point and effectively train new facilitators to ensure that they properly understand the

process of a program and each element.

Next, throughout training my input strength came into action when watching

facilitators learn the process. I collected information regarding what they are doing well

and what they need more guidance on. Using that information, I was able to give the best

feedback that will help the facilitators learn and grow as they start facilitating at the

course. Also, knowing that the new facilitators needed to learn specifics for each element,

I gave input on my experiences as a facilitator such as what works well for me and what

doesn’t.

With training being long and intensive, I used my discipline strength to stay on

task and focus on each step of the training process. I was able to make sure that the tam is

staying focused and enjoying the entire process. Also, there were times when I could

have stepped in when the new facilitators missed a step, but I was able to take a step back

and allow them to fail and learn from their mistakes.

Overall, training new facilitators was a new challenge. I felt ready and prepared to

effectively put on a program that will allow facilitators to learn and grow. My strengths

shined throughout the two days and I utilized all of them but specifically my input,

strategic, and relator strengths.
