Define the following:

a. Grammar - system of speaking and writing a language.


b. Literature – all the valuable writings of specific time, nation etc. and all writings on
some subject.
c. Sentence - a set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and
predicate, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command, and consisting
of a main clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.
d. Subject – the person or thing about whom the statement is made. The subject is the
word or phrase which controls the verb in the clause.
e. Predicate – the part of a sentence or clause containing a verb and stating something
about the subject.
f. Simple Subject – is a subject that has just one noun as the focus of the sentence.
g. Simple Predicate – is the word or words that tell us what specific action the subject is
taking. The simple predicate is always the verb, or in other words, it’s always a word
that shows action.
h. Complete Subject – is the simple subject, the main word or words in a subject, along
with any of the modifiers that describe the subject.
i. Complete Predicate – includes the verb and all the words that tell what happened in the
sentence.
j. Affixes – is a morpheme that is attached to a word stem to form a new word or word
form. Affixes may be derivational, like English -ness and pre-, or inferential, like English
plural -s and past tense -ed.

2. What are the 5 ways of using affixes in words?

There are three main types of affixes: prefixes, infixes, and suffixes.
a. Prefix – occurs at the beginning of a word or stem.
b. Suffix – at the end
c. Infix – occurs in the middle

3. What are the 8 parts of speech? Give examples

a. Noun – word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.


Ex. That girl is elusive.
b. Pronoun – is a word used in place of a noun.
Ex. She is the best teacher this year.
c. Verb – expresses action or being.
Ex. He can swim all day.
d. Adjective – modifies or describes a noun or pronoun.
Ex. The handsome boy on the couch is very intimidating among the rest.
e. Adverb – modifies or describes a verb an adjective, or another adverb.
Ex. My mother brought me a very expensive car on my graduation.
f. Preposition – word placed before noun or pronoun to form a phrase modifying
another word in the sentence.
Ex. The woman in red gave me a sign by the window.
g. Conjunction – joins words, phrases, or clauses.
Ex. My friend and I are going on a trip.
h. Interjection – is a word used to express emotion.
Ex. Oops! Too bad I already booked my flight.

4. Why is the English language important?


It is important because it is the official language in a large number of countries. Learning
English language really can change your life, the skills in harmoniously communicating with
different people using the language would give you the best edge in understanding them. In
this generation using the English language will give you wide knowledge of the things from
books, music, entertainment, internet, etc.
Learning the language will allow you to access to an incredible amount of information that
will help you on the different things in your everyday life.
