Experiment No 6: Title Aim: - List of Apparatus
Experiment No 6: Title Aim: - List of Apparatus
Experiment No 6
Aim : - To find out calorific value of solid or liquid fuel using Bomb calorimeter.
List of apparatus :-
1. Bomb calorimeter.
2. Fuse wire.
3. Oxygen cylinder.
4. Benzonic acid tablet for calorimeter.
Concepts :-
1. Higher calorific value (or) gross calorific value: It is the total heat librated by complete
burning of 1Kg or 1m3 of fuel including the heat of steam formed by combustion of H2 in
fuel.
2. Lower (or) net calorific value: It is the total heat librated by complete burning of 1Kg or
1m3 of fuel deducting the heat of steam formed by combustion of H2 in fuel.
Procedure :-
The name of apparatus rises from the shape of vessel in which the fuel is burnt. The bomb is
made up of stainless steel and consists of base with a support. Crucible is screwed to the body of
the bomb.
On the top of lid bomb carries oxygen supply valve through which bomb is charged with the
O2 at 25 bar to ensure complete combustion power of given fuel.
In fig. the desired sample of coal is taken for the test is usually are grimier & calorimeter is
filled with 2000 c.c. of water.
The sample of coal is then place in crucible the fuse wire which the surrounded the coal
sample is connected to lower ends of flow electrodes.
The agitator is run by electric motor when change of temperature is required for the coal sample
is ignited by closing the electric circuit. The stirrer is kept in motion by electrical motor for about
5 min. until maximum temperature is reached.
The heat generated by combustion of sample of coal is partly absorbed by surrounding water in
the calorimeter. The water equivalents of bomb is then calculated.
Observations :-
mf = Wt. of sample coal burnt bomb in gram.

Experiment no 6 Heat Power Engineering
Calculations :-
Heat librated by fuel = heat absorbed by water & bomb calorimeter.
mf
The heating value determine in this manner is the calorific value at constant volume.
Questions :-
1.What are the different type of fuels do you know.
