Novum Systems

Structural

BK: The structure consists of hot-dip

galvanized, liquid painted, HSS5x3
rectangular steel sections, with semi-
rigid connections to cylindrical steel
nodes. The nodes are zinc plated and
painted.

KK: To brace the structure at the top

row, each steel module is bisected
diagonally with a round tube that has
been hot-dip galvanized and liquid
painted to match the typical members.

Glazing

ECG: Along the horizontal glass joints,

an aluminum channel was built into
airspace that could be used in
conjunction with a stainless-steel
toggle to create a connection that was
not visible from the exterior.

However, on the vertical glass joints,

Novum’s standard edge clamps were
used with continuous caps to create
the desired expressed vertical lines.
Novum used insulated glass units with
blue-tinted glazing and a low-e coating
to create the stunning color, and both
the inner and outer lites were
laminated to ensure that as the glass
glass went around the "equator" the
bottom lite is always laminated.

Design Solution

Embry-Riddle, an aeronautical university in Florida, was looking for a double-curved façade

reminiscent of a pilot’s visor. A very shallow structure was desired, even though the façade
was over 40’ tall and located in a region with extremely high wind loads. Novum was able to
accomplish these goals using a systems approach. Novum helped create a form that ensured
all the glass modules on the double-curved façade were planar. Novum then worked with the
engineer of record to coordinate boundary conditions that allowed the façade to thrust on the
building frame at the jambs. This enabled Novum to keep the profile size of the façade
members to 5” deep. Novum’s proprietary software automated the creation of fabrication
drawings for the glass and steel, which made it possible to both create a unique structure and
meet the fast track schedule.
