0 Introduction
The high level benefits of SOPs include the following: minimizing learning downtime, ensuring
understanding of the role, ensuring consistency in the performance of duties.
In today’s work environment, employee’s development plans include transitions to new roles. As
employees transition to new responsibilities, they may have the ability to get a crash course in
performing the duties if there is an internal employee transfer. This may involve taking informal
instructions or merely trying to memorize the responsibilities and action steps required for successful
completion of the role. If the role is filled externally, the benefit of a new external perspective is
overshadowed by an additional learning curve as an orchestrated transition may not take place. SOPs
provide employees with a framework for completing role requirements while minimizing dependence
on co-worker’s availability for answering questions. It sets the basis for performing key functional
requirements.
SOPs also ensure an understanding of the role. The ability to clearly articulate roles and responsibilities
provides assurance that an individual understands the roles and responsibilities. This is standard
approach to education from grade school through college and the education process continues
throughout one’s work career. When SOPs currently do not exist, the employee takes on the role of a
student crafting the A+ response to an essay. When SOPs exist, the employee takes on the role of a
professor ensuring that all key points are included within the essay.
Employees may believe that they are consistently performing duties but SOPs may indicate the contrary.
SOPs provide an additional level of assurance of consistency. When it is determined that consistency
does not exist, there is the benefit of determining what is deemed a best practice to follow. The value of
consistency includes higher quality results in operations and financial reporting. The result is enhanced
creditability of operational and financial reporting.
Organizations that implement SOPs and ensure that they are periodically updated will be able to
allocated efforts on process improvements and strategic objectives which will deliver long term growth.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) provide benefits to any organization that incorporates them and
ensures that they are kept up to date. The initial preparation of SOPs could be time consuming, but the
long term return on investment (ROI) is well worth the effort.
