Sound Connections Chapter 2

Discussion
This chapter of Sound Connections first goes through the history of music
education practices before then moving through the ideology of the Sound Connections
approach, functionally forming a comparison between the two so that the current or future music
educator reading it can form their own conclusions about which practice may be best for the
students in their classroom to gain the greatest music literacy possible. This comparison comes to
the conclusion that the Sound Connections approach is the best one for literacy.
The reason that this is important for a music educator to read is because it not only lays
out all of the possible approaches to music literacy within their classroom, but also sets down the
reasoning as to why the Sound Connections approach should be used rather than those done in
the past. It also makes a point of reviewing the psychology associated with young students and
learner development in order to impress upon the reader that the Sound Connections strategies
are not simply based in tradition, but rather in research into what is the best methodology for
music education. This is particularly important for a future music educator to hear because they
should have an accurate idea of the pedagogical reasoning behind why they do what they do
within their classrooms, and should be able to defend those approaches to both other music
colleagues and the administration that will be tasked with making sure that they are teaching
students in an appropriate way.
