Benedick Jayson P. Marti

BS Chemical Engineering
Technological Institute of the Philippines – Manila
Summer SY 2018-2019

Self – Assessment and Improvement (Week 1 – April 11-13, 2019)

The task assigned to me this last week are the following:
• Orientation about the company and its vision, mission, nature of their work and the people.
• Selection of pumps according to its type, size/capacity, and pressure head.
• Addition of sodium hypochlorite in the polyethylene tank for the chlorination process of
sewage treatment plant at Girls Scout of the Philippines at Ermita, Manila.
• Calculate the mass of sodium hypochlorite needed for the chlorination process in order to
satisfy the 1 ppm effluent concentration of chlorine.
At the first day of the training, I was very anxious and nervous to the people inside the
company because I am a type of person who is very shy to people at first meeting. The first task
assigned to me is to know the different names of the people in the company and their specific job in
order for me to familiarize myself in the company and to work with them efficiently. After this task, I
felt a little confidence and I realize that there are many personalities and traits inside a workplace
and we should make a way to deal every people with care and love without compromising the ethical
relationship inside the company. I am also assigned to compute the mass of sodium hypochlorite to
be used in chlorination process and after the task I felt happy because I can apply all the learnings
that I obtained during my study. After the computations, I went to Girls Scout of the Philippines at
Ermita, Manila together with other interns to add sodium hypochlorite in the polyethylene tank in
order to kill the remaining microorganisms before discharging it into river streams. In the site, I was
amazed on the different equipment and apparatus they used in establishing a Sewage Treatment
Plant like blower, ozonator, submersible pumps and bar screens that I only see at the books and in
the internet, I felt that I am a chemical engineer working in the industry to address problems such as
pollution specifically water pollution. And lastly, I was assigned in the selection of pumps depending
on customer’s criteria and specifications such as types, capacity and pressure heads. After
completing this task, I realized that as a future engineer, one must master not only the technical
details but also on how to enter a specified market in order to make profit at the same time helping
people in their problems requiring engineering solutions.
The student outcomes are (i) and (j):
(i) Function effectively as an individual and as a member or leader in diverse
teams in multidisciplinary setting.
(j) Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with various
communities including engineering experts and society at large using appropriate
levels of discourse.
