COST COMPARISON OF DIESEL AND ELECTRIC OPERATED PUMPS

ASSUMPTIONS:

1. Only operating cost is to be compared

2. No installation cost or repair/maintenance cost will be taken care off

To obtain the cost at the shaft, the cost per megajoule (MJ) of energy is determined by:

1. Dividing the cost per litre by the specific energy of a litre of fuel

Specific energy of diesel fuel = 39 MJ/lt = 10.6 kWh of energy

1 MJ/lt = 0.278 kWh

3.6 mJ= 1 kWh

LET US ASSUME THAT 1000 KWH OF ENERGY IS REQUIRED AT SHAFT

(1) Diesel engine efficiency = 35 %

Then quantity of diesel fuel required = 1000/(10.6*0.35) =270 lt of Diesel

Price of diesel fuel= 270 lt *Rs. 70/lt= Rs. 18900

(2) Electric engine efficiency = 85 %

Electric transmission efficiency = 100 % (assumption)

Quantity of electricity required = 1000/0.85 = 1177 kWh (approx)

Rate of electricity (Rs./kWh) = 7

Price of electricity = 1177*7 = Rs. 8239

Rate of electricity (Rs./kWh) Price of electricity (Rs.) Ratio of Diesel/Electric cost

1 1177 16.06
2 2354 8.03
3 3531 5.35
4 4708 4.01
5 5885 3.21
6 7062 2.67
7 8239 2.29
8 9416 2.00
9 10593 1.78
10 11770 1.60
