Project 1 – Publishing Plan

Abstract
This document is meant to outline the process of
publishing that will be followed for Chelsea Wright’s
Project 3 in Dr. Mattson’s WRTG 4309 class. This
outline will include the summary of the document, the
estimated publishing costs, and the purpose of the
planned deliverable.
I. Project Summary
Project 3 is meant to be an endeavor in furthering
skills by designing a print-print based deliverable. My
deliverable will be in the form of a 24 page booklet
including the front and back covers. The basis of my
booklet will be providing help on the reading and
understanding of commercial sewing patterns.
Commercial sewing patterns use specific language and
images that represent techniques and concepts with
which beginner sewers may not be familiar. Through
this visual guide I hope to further my design skills by
communicating the easiest and most effective way to
read and use commercial patterns.
I plan on breaking this document into multiple
sections so that the reader can easily skim for specific
information. Sections I intend to include are a
dictionary of relevant terms, a glossary of common
stitches and techniques, and a guide on interpreting
commonly used symbols and graphics. For images I
will be using the symbols from the commercial
patterns, as well as creating my own graphics that
illustrate useful ways for remembering the symbols or
techniques. If time and space allow I may take a
specific commercial pattern and use it as an example
by creating a step by step guide to following it. This
section, if included, will consist of images of my own
from following the pattern as well as any created
images I feel will better explain a concept than a
photograph.
This project is meant to display the kinds of
deliverables we, the students, may one day need to
provide for clients. These requests will often be
outside of our interests as writers and different from
what we have produced in previous classes. I have
high hopes that Project 3 will be a lesson that will
continue to be of use as we enter the workplace and
begin expanding beyond the scope of academic
writing.
II. Budget
Another important lesson to be learned from this
project is to be able to operate feasibly in the
publishing process. Building a budget will prepare us
for the cost of publishing. It will also provide the skills
to assess certain necessities and their cause to
determine the feasibility of printing.
I set a strict budget for the print costs of Project 3.
Based on the assessment of quotes from two sources,
I hope to remain in within a budget of $8,000 as
follows:
