A gas producer supplies the fuel for several lime kilns. Although the composition of the gas varies, the average of
a number of analyses gives 9.5% CO2, 20.1% CO, 11.3% H2, 2.8% CH4, and 56.3% N2. Samples of the gas discharged
by the kiln give 27.75% CO2, 2.25% O2, and 70.0% N2. Find, per pound of carbon burnt, the number of pounds of
burnt lime produced from a limestone of the composition 1.54% insoluble, 1.44% Fe2O3, 50.07% CaO, 3.54%
MgO, and the balance CO2.
Note: Burnt lime contains all nonvolatile compounds aside from CaO.
A lime furnace burns 100 kg of coal (containing 80% C, 5% H, 2% N, 1% S, and 12% ash) and limestone
(containing 82% CaCO3, 7% MgCO3, and 11% inert material) with excess air. The average stack gas analysis is
14.42% CO2, 6.03% O2, and 79.55% N2. CO2 percentage includes SO2 also. Calculate the following:
