EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan Template

Leadership Video/Presentation

School age children: K-12th grade afterschool program

Common Core Standards:

STRAND: Information and Communications Technology The understanding and application of digital
learning tools for accessing, creating, evaluating, applying and communicating ideas and information.
Topic 3: Use digital learning tools and resources to construct knowledge.
Topic 4: Use digital learning tools and resources to communicate and disseminate information to multiple
audiences.

Lesson Summary:

Children will be divided into groups and be asked to pick a topic/situation that effects their peers, and
community, for example: cyber bullying, the importance of community service work, how to be a leader,
sharing toys in the classroom, etc. Then they will record themselves speaking on their topics using a digital
camera to make a fun video presentation.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson will take a week to complete. I will give the children 30-60 mins a day to finish their
presentations.

Commentary: I plan on getting my children interested by engaging with them during their leisure time to
ask them about their favorite YouTube stars or channels. In my dialogue I will include the process of video
editing, and all the work that goes into having your own channel, as well as the money that these young
YouTube stars make by simply talking about topics that interest them, and having good content. I will also
challenge them to know why that person/or channel is their favorite.
Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:
First 20 minutes: Introductory discussion – Students will have a group discussion about serious, or
interesting topics/problems that are important to them and what would they do to change it, or make others
aware.
15 minutes: I will explain the lesson, and break the children up evenly into groups with a mixed age group.
The last 15-20 minutes: The children will work together to brainstorm one topic to discuss amongst their
group and document it, as well as each individuals roles.

Day 2:

60 minutes: Children will write down key points, and ideas down so they can create an outline to their video
presentation. They will also discuss backdrops/props/location and other video marketing ideas they will need
to bring from home, or to use from the classroom at this time. They will also research any additional
resources, and supportive information for their presentations on the classroom computers, ebooks, or any
other research school of choice.

Day 3:

First 30 minutes: The children will now practice scripts, and set up their recording space. They will bring in
materials from home, or look around the classroom to make their scene pop! I will also alow them to have
access to any art materials, and/or the computer so they can design the backdrop, or to make other props.
Last 30 minutes: The children will start recording with the cameras that were assigned to their group.

Day 4:
60 minutes: It’s time to wrap it up! The children will finish recordings, edit their videos using apps, and
other video editing resources, and finalize their project. Some software examples: Movavi Video Editor,
Filmora, IMovie, Windows Movie Maker, Magisto, etc.

Day 5:
60 minutes: Time to present on the projector, or whiteboard! After presentations, we will have group
discussions on the challenges of the project, or any comments, or feedback.

Pre-Assessment:
On Day 4, during the last 30 minutes of editing the videos, the teachers will go around to talk to each group,
and see if they need help with editing, etc. With this dialogue it will help expand conversation regarding how
well, or poorly they are doing with the equipment/assignment. I assume they will already know how to work
a digital camera, but editing a video is a little more complex. By having the Pre-Assessment early, it gives
room for correction before presentations.

Scoring Guidelines:
Teacher will be able to use judgement to see how much effort each individual child is putting in on the
assignment during Day 4 Pre-Assessment group talks. The teacher will ask each child what their role was in
completing the project.

Post-Assessment:
The presentations and video edits will be looked at by the teachers to score effectively. I think the editing
portion of the video is 50% of the grade so I will be looking at video quality, sound, edits, transitions,
background music, etc.

Then I will give this 3 question quiz.

1. What did you learn about this experience?


2. What challenges did you face making/editing the video, and why? How did you get over them?
3. How did technology play apart in this assignment?

Scoring Guidelines:
Scoring will be based by details, and length of the responses. The first two questions are opinion
based. The last question will be scored correct if children explain technology is based around
communication, spreading knowledge, and the standards core terms.

Differentiated Instructional Support


Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students:
I will be assessing the children the whole week and checking in often. So if I see a child struggling with
remembering script, I will encourage the team to make that student the camera holder instead. There are so
many production and behind the seen roles that anybody can tap into.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material:
I can have them write out their scripts so they can see it to record, let them bring in their own electronics
from home so they can be more savvy and comfortable, and lastly they check in with children on Day 3 to
see what extra support they may need to be successful.

Homework Options and Home Connections


The homework is to bring props, decorations, or costumes from home that will make your video pop, and be
aesthetically pleasing.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This lesson is about the using technology to get an idea, or lesson across. So the children will be verbally
expressing themselves throughout the project, so the first Domain is
 Language/Speech

In order to have a topic to talk about you have to be in tune to ideas, or problems that you are passionate
about, as well as be confident in the camera, so the second one that ties into this is
 Social Emotional!

Materials and Resources:

For teachers Whiteboard, or projector, a visual example of the assignment to show the children prior
to assignment, along with notebooks, and pencils for observations.

For students Digital cameras, USB cords, and computers/laptops.

Additional Notes
