DISCUSSION

2.1 Definition of effective teaching

Basically, teachers has a role that was to impart their knowledge and
skill to students. The internet has changed all that as information can now be
obtained anywhere, any time on anything. Thus the role of teachers has
changed to developing the skills and tools to assist students in critically
analysing the information available.

Effective teaching is more than just the successful transference of

knowledge and skill or application around a particular topic. Effective
teaching ensures that this approach to learning is replaced by deeper, student
driven approaches to learning that analyse, develop, create and demonstrate
understanding. Students need to initiate learning and maintain engagement
during learning in their development as independent lifelong learners.

Effective teaching is not about jargon, buzzwords or particular

philosophies of teaching. But, effective teaching is about helping students to
achieve the best results they can at school.

2.2 Principles of effective teaching English

The most effective teaching is that which enables the most effective
learning. Based on Ramsden (2013) there are six key principles to build
effective teaching, especially in teaching English.

1. Interest and explanation

English teachers should make the English subject interesting. To make

student interesting, teacher must arouse student curiosity first. After that,

3
provide clear explanations and remember to clarify the reasons why a
particular fact or skill is essential for understanding the whole. That was
very important explaining clearly to the students to build effective English
teaching.

2. Concern and respect for students and student learning

Taking an interest in what students know and don't know that is teachers’
obligation in effective English teaching. English teachers should be
generous and give students the benefit of the doubt. Challenge students,
but simultaneously make it easy for them to master the ideas and facts.
And don’t forget strive to make the difficult parts easy.

3. Appropriate assessment and feedback

English teachers should set the right assessment and match them to the
material to be learned. Give questions to the students in a way that
demands evidence of understanding. Ensure feedback focuses on what
they still need to study to get it right to make sure students know and feel
comfortable in admitting they've got more to learn.

4. Clear goals and intellectual challenge

English teacher must consistent high academic expectations produce better

student performance with provide clear statements of course goals, student
expectations and efforts, teacher expectations and efforts.

5. Independence, control and engagement

English tecahers should ensure content is engaging and delivered in way to

reach students’ understanding. Allow students the space to learn at their
own pace and their own sequence. And provide a balance between
students feeling in control of their learning and well supported with
teacher direction.

4
6. Learning from students

Acknowledging the relationship between teaching, learning and content as

problematic, uncertain and relative, English teachers also need to learn
from the students too. Beside that, evaluation of teaching practices
highlights successes, challenges and identifies modifications to create
more effective teaching practices.
