Overview of CARBOLAB

3
What is CARBOLAB?

Improving the knowledge of carbon storage and enhanced

coalbed methane (ECBM) by in-situ underground tests

Start : 1 July 2009 End : 30 June 2013

Budget : 4.2 M€

Oviedo
CARBOLAB Objectives

Fill the gap between laboratory experiments and field

field-scale
scale CO2
injection pilot tests by studying in situ physical and chemical
processes

This scale of testing will enable:

 To acquire quality data by direct sampling
 To improve the models that simulate the chemico-physical effects
 To identify the critical parameters to be monitored during and after ECBM
operations.

The analytical means and modelling tools will be joined together

to form a technical platform.

Better understanding g of adsorption,

p , diffusion,, transport
p and coal
swelling by in situ observations, data acquisition and modelling

Well-logging objectives

Coal seam geometry (mapping)

Coal and surrounding rock characterisation:

 continuous coring+additional logging information for a petrophysical evaluation

Geomechanical p
parameters from logs:
g
 mechanical properties of coal with full-wave sonic and density
 Characterisation of cleat system and natural fracturing with imagery log

more reliable in situ coal data

In situ stress measurement (overcorring)  to assess local

stress field

Design for monitoring  several methods

(geochemical/geophysical) will be used. Base line of these
methods will be integrated in the characterisation phase.

Concluding remarks

CO2 storage into coal seam causes coupled physico-chemico-

mechanical effects not easy to address with lab test and/or full-
full
scale pilot.

CARBOLAB project = in situ laboratory could fill the gap

between those 2 scales

This project involves a detailed characterisation phase and an

i
important monitoring
i i program

Few preliminary results to be presented as the project is in its

first year
year.
