After introducing the Read & Write extension and Google Docs, Chris seemed eager to try it out. He

was a little nervous since he is not proficient with typing. Chris started by writing a short summary of what

he had done while on vacation this summer. He tried to start going back to check it before he was finished,

but I encouraged him to type everything out first. He did use the text predictor a few times as he was typing.

Once he finished, he used the playback option to have the extension read what he had typed. As he listened

to it, he identified places that did not sound right; these were mostly words that he had typed incorrectly due

to not knowing how to spell them. When he identified these words, he used the text predictor to find the

correct word. After he had corrected all of these mistakes he still noticed something did not sound right. He

realized he needed punctuation. This is something I have never seen him realize while he is typing (text,

email, Facebook, etc.). Until he heard it read back to him, he did not realize where he needed punctuation.

Overall, Chris seemed to enjoy using this technology. After all of the practice using it, I asked him

how he felt about it and if he thought it could be helpful. He found it easy to name many uses for this

technology. Chris has wanted to go back to college to further his education (in a technical field) but was

nervous about the impact his learning disability would have. I specifically asked him if he thought this or

other technology might make it easier, and I finally saw him realize that going back to college might actually

be possible. From my observations and conversations with Chris, the technology seemed to be effective in

helping him meet his goal of being able to correctly express his thoughts and ideas in writing without leaving

out words, repeating words, or putting words out of order. It was a slow process, but I believe there were a

lot of factors at play: lack of typing skills, new technology, and simply not practicing writing very much. I

know this will be a long process to improve his writing skills, but like anything else, I believe it will become

quicker and easier with time. Toward the end of our time working together, we utilized the reading features
of the extension. Chris loves to read news and other articles he finds online, but he usually only reads parts

of them because it takes so long. With the features of this extension, he was able to have the text read aloud

and highlighted as it is read which allows practice of recognizing the words. While I feel that there may be

better assistive technology to help with these reading and writing goals, this free extension was effective for

the task and helped Chris see that he does have options to help him become a better reader and writer.
