Engagement: Students are engaged in this lesson about two and three dimensional shapes because they
get to determine which shape they want to create their iMovie on, using actual pictures of the shapes and
real world shapes that they find online or original photographs incorporated into their film. Student can
add text, music and audio to their video.

Representation: representation is provided in this lesson, as it provides alternatives for visual and auditory
learners. Student can listen to videos and transcripts of the video can be provided. Students are using
understanding and make connections to the content by finding the shapes in the real world and creating
their own video on what they saw.

Action and Expression: Student will express themselves in a multitude of ways by their choice of music,
photos, and information on the shape of their choice. Students can use laptops, tablets, and phone that are
Mac supported to conduct their research and create their iMovie.

Lesson idea implementation: The lesson will begin as I introduce a new standard to the class on two- and
three-dimensional shapes. Students have established background knowledge on these shaped from the
flipped classroom activity, posted on the class blog, they worked on over the weekend. I will show the class
my video that encompasses information on most shapes the students may have selected or found over the
weekend. After students watch the video, they will present the shapes that they drew over the weekend
and determine which they would like their movie to focus on. Students will then be assigned iPads and
computers to use in class to collect information about their shape including the number of faces, vertices,
etc. This research portion of the assignment may take a couple of days for students to collect all of their
data.

Once all data has been collected, students will begin assembling their information, including pictures into
an iMovie. Students will combine all of their pictures, videos, and music for the instructor to approve
before then create their video. Once approved, they will include their drawing of the shapes as the cover
page and follow a rubric for assembling their film. Students will record and audio of their own voice
introducing their video and reading any text they may have added to the video. Upon completion students
videos will be presented to the class.

Importance of technology: A shapes video is important to the lesson because it provides the students with
an opportunity to create and design a project utilizing their knowledge on two and three dimensional
shapes. They are able to showcase how they find these shapes in their everyday life and this displays their
knowledge of the attributes and characteristics of the shapes. Students need to use technology including
cameras, iPhones, iPads, Mac computers, the iMovie app, and Internet to research and find the original
characteristics of the shape selected.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:


This activity may cause concern that students are using technology and creating a video that could be publish
on the classroom blog or school website. To lessen the concern, any work published on the classroom blog
will be password protected providing only parents and students with access to the video. Students will only
be allow to conduct research on kid-friendly sites kiddle.co and DiscoveryEducation.com. Students voices can
be recorded, but their faces and personal information will not be on the created video.

Reflective Practice: This lesson will impact student learning because they are engaging in active learning
through creation of their video, they are learning the standard in innovative way, and they are creating a
movie that is their original work. This project will be completed in the beginning of the unit to support their
learning and understanding of geometry concepts. An extension would be for students to watch their peers
videos and then complete an in-class scavenger hunt, allowing student to take pictures and research in groups
all their shapes and create a second video work collectively combining their information.
