What is the effect of increasing pH of water (5, 6,
7, 8, 9) on the growth, measured as height (from
the bottom of the plate to tallest height of the
plant), in cm ± 0.1, of Vigna radiata (mung beans)
after 7 days planting?

Expectations

Having the right minerals and nutrients also includes having the just-right
pH level of water., as the different pH rates of water can greatly affect the
growth of plants. According to the Oxford Biology Textbook, plants will
grow best at an acidic to neutral pH level: pH 5.0 to pH 7.0, but more in a
neutral pH level, which is pH 7.0. It is very difficult for plants to grow
without the specific nutrients needed. For example, if the plants are
grown with acidic water with pH levels below 5, it will be highly toxic for
the plants to grow. On the other hand, plants watered with pH levels
above 7 is alkaline, harming the healthy production of the plants. These
pH rates will harm the plants and the mung beans grow with pH water
ranging from 5.5 to 7, then they will grow the best. This is because pH
waters that are below the 7 range is acidic and above the 7 range is
alkaline.

 Methods + Improvements

Method:
1st try → failed
1. Prepare 500 cm3 of designated pH water (5, 6, 7, 8, 9) with the help of the lab
technicians and put them in a labelled empty water bottles.
2. Test for the viability of the mung beans by soaking them in a basin of water - Did not cover the petri
for a few minutes and discarding the non-viable floating ones. dish when growing
3. Prepare five petri dishes by adding 40g of cotton, well spread on each plate.
4. Label each plate as pH 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

5. Then, add 10 mung bean seeds spread evenly per plate.
6. Add 30 cm3 of designated pH water to each assigned plate.
7. Place all the plates in the same location so that they can receive the same
amount of sunlight throughout the experiment.
8. Water the plants with 10 cm3 of designated pH water daily.
9. Allow the plants to grow and measure the height (using a ruler) of the five
tallest plants on Day 3.
10. Record the results of the height of the mung beans.
11. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for Day 5 and 7.
