LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH 9

 Use appropriate modals in expressing permission, obligation, and prohibition

III. PROCEDURE
A. Reviewing previous lesson/s or presenting the new lesson
MOTIVATION
 The class will be having an activity called “Picture talk”. The students will be
divided into four (4) groups. Each group should provide lines for their
assigned pictures.
B. Presenting examples/instances of the new lesson.
 The teacher will ask the students to analyze the picture and the dialogues.

D. Discussing new concepts


 The teacher will discuss the topic.

Modals- also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, are special verbs used
mostly to express modality (properties such as possibility, obligation, etc.)
- Modal verbs are used to express something that can probably,
certainly, or possibly happen.
- Modal verbs help when speaking about ability, making requests and
offers, asking permission, and more.

 Permission– can, may, could

Can- is most often used to ask for or give permission/ shows ability
Example: Can I borrow your pen?

May- expressing possibility


Example: That may be true.

Could- used in making polite requests.


Example: Could I use the phone?

 Prohibition- can’t, mustn’t


Can’t – usually gives the idea of something that is against the rule.
Example: You can’t drive without having a driver’s license.

Mustn’t- usually means that it is the speaker who is setting the rule.
Example: You musn’t be late tomorrow.
Obligation- have to, must
Have to- shows that the obligation comes from someone else, not the
speaker. This is usually referring to a rule or law.
Example: You have to pay your taxes.

Must- shows us that the obligation comes from the speaker.


Example: I have to do my assignment.

E. Developing mastery
 The teacher will divide the class into four (4) groups The students will be given
differentiated activities, here are the following:

Group 1: “I CAN BE A SINGER!”


Directions: Sing a song that uses the modals that show ability.

Group 2: “WHY CAN’T I BE SHAKESPEARE?”


Directions: Create two- stanza poem about love using the modals that show
prohibition.

Group 3: “PRAYER FOR PERMISSION”


Directions: Create a short prayer using the modals that ask permission.

Group 4: “YOU MUST ACT IT OUT!”


Directions: Make a dialogue about a student who wants to play with his friends
but he needs to do his school works and do the household chores
using modals that show obligation

The students will be graded according to the following rubrics:

Originality 5 points
Proper use of modals 3 points
Presentation 2 points

 What is the importance of choosing the appropriate word(s) that you are going to
use in any form of conversation?

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the Lesson


 The students will define modals and will give the examples of modals that show
permission, prohibition and obligation.
