1. THE BIBLE STANDS 12. HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION

I I
The Bible stands like a rock undaunted How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
’Mid the raging storms of time; Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
Its pages burn with the truth eternal, What more can He say than to you He hath said—
And they glow with a light sublime. To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

Refrain: II
The Bible stands though the hills may tumble, Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,
It will firmly stand when the earth shall crumble; For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I will plant my feet on its firm foundation, I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
For the Bible stands. Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand.

II III
The Bible stands like a mountain tow’ring When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
Far above the works of men; The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
Its truth by none ever was refuted, For I will be with thee thy trouble to bless,
And destroy it they never can. And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

III
The Bible stands and it will forever, IV
When the world has passed away; When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
By inspiration it has been given, My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply;
All its precepts I will obey. The flame shall not harm thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

IV
The Bible stands every test we give it, V
For its Author is divine; The soul that on Jesus doth lean for repose,
By grace alone I expect to live it, I will not, I will not, desert to his foes;
And to prove and to make it mine. That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.”
11. THE SOLID ROCK 2. ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS
I
I Onward Christian soldiers! Marching as to war,
My hope is built on nothing less With the cross of Jesus Going on before.
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness; Christ, the royal Master, Leads against the foe;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, Forward into battle, See, His banners go!
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
REFRAIN
Onward, Christian soldiers! Marching as to war,
CHORUS
With the cross of Jesus, Going on before.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand. II
All other ground is sinking sand At the name of Jesus Satan’s host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers, On to victory!
II Hell’s foundations quiver At the shout of praise:
When darkness veils His lovely face, Brothers, lift your voices, Loud your anthems raise!
I rest on His unchanging grace; III
In every high and stormy gale Like a mighty army Moves the Church of God:
My anchor holds within the veil. Brothers, we are treading Where the saints have trod;
We are not divided, All one Body we—
III One in hope and doctrine, One in charity.
His oath, His covenant, and blood IV
Support me in the whelming flood; Crowns and thrones may perish, Kingdoms rise and
When every earthly prop gives way, wane;
He then is all my Hope and Stay. But the Church of Jesus Constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never ’Gainst the Church prevail;
IV We have Christ’s own promise, Which can never fail.
When He shall come with trumpet sound, V
Oh, may I then in Him be found, Onward, then, ye people! Join our happy throng;
Clothed in His righteousness alone, Blend with ours your voices In the triumph song.
Faultless to stand before the throne! Glory, laud and honor Unto Christ, the King;
This through countless ages Men and angels sing.
3. SOUND THE BATTLE CRY 10. STAND UP FOR JESUS
I
Sound the battle cry! See, the foe is nigh; I
Raise the standard high for the Lord; Stand up, stand up for Jesus! ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss:
Gird your armor on, stand firm every one; From vict’ry unto vict’ry, His army shall He lead,
Rest your cause upon His holy Word. Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

Refrain: II
Rouse, then, soldiers, rally round the banner, Stand up, stand up for Jesus! The trumpet call obey:
Ready, steady, pass the word along; Forth to the mighty conflict, in this His glorious day;
Onward, forward, shout aloud, “Hosanna!” Ye that are men now serve Him against unnumbered
foes;
Christ is Captain of the mighty throng. Let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength
oppose.
II
Strong to meet the foe, marching on we go, III
While our cause we know must prevail; Stand up, stand up for Jesus! Stand in His strength
Shield and banner bright, gleaming in the light, alone,
Battling for the right we ne’er can fail. The arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your
own;
Put on the gospel armor, and watching unto prayer,
III Where calls the voice of duty, be never wanting
there.
O Thou God of all, hear us when we call,
Help us one and all by Thy grace; IV
When the battle’s done, and the vict’ry’s won, Stand up, stand up for Jesus! the strife will not be
long;
May we wear the crown before Thy face.
This day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s
song;
To him that overcometh a crown of life shall be;
He with the King of glory shall reign eternally.
9. WHO IS ON THE LORD’S SIDE 4. FAITH IS THE VICTORY
I I
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King? Encamped along the hills of light, Ye Christian soldiers, rise,
Who will be His helpers, other lives to bring? And press the battle ere the night Shall veil the glowing skies.
Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe? Against the foe in vales below Let all our strength be hurled;
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go? Faith is the victory, we know, That overcomes the world.
By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine! Refrain:
II Faith is the victory! Faith is the victory!
Not for weight of glory, nor for crown and palm, Oh, glorious victory, That overcomes the world.
Enter we the army, raise the warrior psalm;
But for love that claimeth lives for whom He died: II
He whom Jesus saveth marches on His side. His banner over us is love, Our sword the Word of God;
By Thy love constraining, by Thy grace divine, We tread the road the saints above With shouts of triumph trod.
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine! By faith, they like a whirlwind’s breath, Swept on o’er every field;
III The faith by which they conquered death Is still our shining
Jesus, Thou hast bought us, not with gold or gem, shield.
But with Thine own lifeblood, for Thy diadem;
With Thy blessing filling each who comes to Thee, III
Thou hast made us willing, Thou hast made us free. On every hand the foe we find Drawn up in dread array;
By Thy grand redemption, by Thy grace divine, Let tents of ease be left behind, And onward to the fray.
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine! Salvation’s helmet on each head, With truth all girt about,
IV The earth shall tremble ’neath our tread, And echo with our
Fierce may be the conflict, strong may be the foe, shout.
But the King’s own army none can overthrow;
’Round His standard ranging, vict’ry is secure, IV
For His truth unchanging makes the triumph sure. To him that overcomes the foe, White raiment shall be giv’n;
Joyfully enlisting, by Thy grace divine, Before the angels he shall know His name confessed in heav’n.
We are on the Lord’s side—Savior, we are Thine! Then onward from the hills of light, Our hearts with love aflame,
V We’ll vanquish all the hosts of night, In Jesus’ conqu’ring name.
Chosen to be soldiers, in an alien land,
Chosen, called, and faithful, for our Captain’s band;
In the service royal, let us not grow cold,
Let us be right loyal, noble, true and bold.
Master, wilt Thou keep us, by Thy grace divine,
Always on the Lord’s side—Savior, always Thine!
5. THE OLD FASHION WAY 8. LEANING ON THE EVERLASTING ARMS
I I
They call me old-fashioned because I believe What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
That the Bible is God’s holy Word, leaning on the everlasting arms;
That Jesus, who lived among men long ago,
Is divine, and the Christ of God.
what a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
Refrain
My sin was old-fashioned, Refrain:
My guilt was old-fashioned, Leaning, leaning,
God’s love was old-fashioned, I know; safe and secure from all alarms;
And the way I was saved was the old-fashioned way, leaning, leaning,
Through the blood that makes whiter than snow. leaning on the everlasting arms.
I
Old-fashioned, because I believe and accept II
Only what has been spoken from Heav’n; O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Old-fashioned because at the cross I was saved, leaning on the everlasting arms;
At the cross had my sins forgiv’n. O how bright the path grows from day to day,
leaning on the everlasting arms.
II
Old-fashioned, because I am bound to do right,
To walk in the straight narrow way;
III
Because I have given my whole life to God, What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Old-fashioned because I pray. leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
IV leaning on the everlasting arms.
Old-fashioned, because I am looking above
To Jesus, my glorified Lord;
Because I believe He is coming again,
Fulfilling His holy Word.
7. THE CHURCH ONE FOUNDATION 6. MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE
I I
The church's one Foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; My faith looks up to Thee,
she is His new creation, by water and the Word; Thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine!
from heav'n He came and sought her to be His holy Now hear me while I pray, Take all my guilt away,
bride; O let me from this day Be wholly Thine!
with His own blood He bought her, and for her life He
died. II
May Thy rich grace impart
II
Elect from ev'ry nation, yet one o'er all the earth,
Strength to my fainting heart, My zeal inspire;
her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; As Thou hast died for me, O may my love to Thee
one holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food, Pure, warm, and changeless be A living fire!
and to one hope she presses, with ev'ry grace endued.
III
III While life's dark maze I tread,
Tho' with a scornful wonder, men see her sore And griefs around me spread, Be Thou my guide;
oppressed, Bid darkness turn to day, Wipe sorrow's tears
by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, away,
yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, Nor let me ever stray From Thee aside.
"How long?"
And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of IV
song. When ends life's transient dream,
When death's cold, sullen stream Shall o'er me roll,
IV
The church shall never perish! Her dear Lord, to
Blest Savior, then, in love, Fear and distrust
defend, remove;
to guide, sustain, and cherish, is with her to the end; O bear me safe above, A ransomed soul!
tho' there be those that hate her and false sons in her
pale,
against the foe or traitor she ever shall prevail
